Five years ag, French navy fficer Jérôme Chardn was listening t a radi prgram abut the jurney f the bar-tailed gdwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilmeters between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardn understd hw treacherus the jurney wuld be, as heavy strms frequently hit Pacific island cmmunities. Yet, smehw, bar-tailed gdwits rutinely pass thrugh the area uninjured. Chardn wndered whether learning hw birds traveled culd help castal cmmunities avid natural disasters.
This past January, a team frm France’s Natinal Museum f Natural Histry (NMNH) began experiments designed t test Chardn’s idea. Researchers with a prject led by Frédéric Jiguet frm NMNH equipped 56 birds f five species with cutting edge animal tracking technlgy. The team members were ferried t remte islands in French Plynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technlgy. These tags sent the birds’ lcatins t the Internatinal Space Statin, which bunced the data back t scientists n Earth wh culd then fllw the birds — waiting t see hw the birds respnded t natural disasters.
The prject is fcusing n birds’ ability t hear infrasund, the lw-frequency sund humans cannt hear but that the researchers believe is the mst likely signal birds wuld use t sense strms and tsunamis (海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind f glden-winged birds in the central and sutheastern America fund that the birds flew up t 1,500 kilmeters t escape frm an utbreak f trnades (龙卷风) that killed 35 peple. The birds fled at least 24 hurs befre any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists t believe that they had heard the strm system frm mre than 400 kilmeters away.
The team plans n tagging hundreds mre birds acrss the Pacific t prepare fr a ptential tsunami. “I think if there’s ne wave that spreads acrss islands, we can get data frm different species at different lcatins,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s wrth cntinuing t tag and t develp lcal systems t better analyze this. There are chances that we will develp a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”

All the hard wrk that yu’ve spent making strng passwrds, cmbining pet names with numbers, symbls and birthdates culd all sn be fr nthing as a new artificial intelligence (AI) mdel achieves a 95% accuracy f understanding keystrkes (按键).
At least that’s the extreme view f a team f British researchers. Using a deep learning mdel, they were able t steal data frm a laptp’s keybard using a micrphne t understand what is being typed. This, in thery, wuld allw hackers wh were able t gain access t yur laptp t btain what is being typed including messages and passwrds.
The first step fr this attack t wrk is by recrding the keystrkes n smene’s keybard. This is needed t train the algrithm (计算程序). While this culd be dne frm the laptp’s micrphne, it culd equally be achieved by placing a smartphne near the cmputer. By pressing 36 keys n a mdern MacBk Pr 25 times each and recrding the sunds prduced, the researchers gained a full set f training data. This infrmatin is turned int wavefrms t shw identifiable differences between each key. With this infrmatin in hand, they culd then build a machine-learning mdel t understand which f these wavefrms lines up with which key.
“If yu get enugh data, a mdel can be built pretty easily,” Oli Buckley, a prfessr f Internet security. “If it wrks n ne keybard, it will likely wrk n the next. The MacBk has a nice, quiet keybard, s the idea is that if it wrks n smething quiet, it will have a wide-reaching ability n luder keybards”.
While this all sunds pretty scary, nt t mentin a new frm f hacking (侵入) t lk ut fr, it isn’t quite as wrrying as it sunds.
“A gd sample f data is needed fr it t wrk, s this changes if yu’re using a Dell, a MacBk r an external keybard. Als, factrs change. Sme peple type luder and harder, r my keybards full f cat hair s that impacts things slightly”, says Buckley.
    32. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. Why prtective steps are needed.
    B. Why a set f training data is vital.
    C. Hw yu dcument secret infrmatin.
    D. Hw hackers gain data frm targeted cmputers.
    33. What des the underlined wrd “it” in paragraph 4 refer t?
    A. The keybard.B. The mdel.C. The data.D. The cmputer.
    34. What’s the authr’s attitude tward British researchers’ view?
    A. Cncerned.B. Agreeable.C. Negative.D. Objective.
    35. What d Buckley’s wrds imply in the last paragraph?
    A. AI understands exactly what yu’re typing.
    B. Purchasing expensive cmputer is necessary.
    C. Cats play an imprtant rle in privacy prtectin.
    D. Building an accurate dataset thrugh keystrkes is nt easy.

Fr ne week, keep a screcard f hw many times each persn uses “n” r “but”. 38 And, if yu explre a little deeper, yu’ll see patterns emerge. Fr instance, sme peple use these wrds t gain pwer. Yu’ll see hw much peple hate it, cnsciusly r nt, and hw it stifles (抑制) rather than pens up discussins.
39 Practically withut even thinking, I keep cunt f their use f these tw little wrds. It’s such an imprtant indicatr! If the numbers pile up in an initial meeting with a client, I’ll interrupt him r her and say, “We’ve been talking fr almst an hur nw, and d yu realize that yu have respnded 17 times with either ‘n’ r ‘but’?” This is the mment when a serius talk abut changing behavir begins.
If this is yur interpersnal challenge, yu can d this little test fr yurself just as easily as yu can t judge yur c-wrkers. Stp trying t defend yur psitin and start mnitring hw many times yu begin remarks with “n” r “but”. 40 Fr example That’s true, but...”. Anther expressin is “Yes, but...”.
    A. I use this technique with my clients.
    B. Why d peple like t say these tw wrds?
    C. What are these cnversatin stpping wrds?
