    All parents knw it’s difficult t get children t eat vegetables. Sme ffer rewards r treats fr children finishing their share. But researchers have discvered that yungsters wh are nt praised fr trying vegetables are mre likely t eat them eventually. The best way t get children t eat fd they hate is repeated expsure.
    Psychlgists studied 98 children in Belgium. They gave them five kinds f vegetables t eat — mushrms, peas, eggplants, carrts and cabbages. The results revealed that carrts were the least-liked vegetable amng yungsters. The children were then given a bwl f biled carrts and tld t chse hw much t eat. After 8 minutes, they were asked t rate the dish as “delicius,” “just OK” r “awful.” The trial went n twice a week fr a mnth, with a fllw-up taste test 8 weeks after the trial. Children were split int three grups, with ne grup asked t try the bwl f carrts repeatedly with n further encuragement. The ther tw grups were given rewards f a ty r verbal praise.
    After the trial, 81% f children wh simply tried the carrts cnsistently liked them. This is in cntrast t 68% fr the grup given a ty and 75% fr the grup given verbal praise.

She replied, “I dn’t want t lk s inexperienced that they suspect this is my first trial.” She had fallen victim t the “dn’ts” syndrme — a frm f negative gal setting.     Research shws a mental image fires the nerve system the same way as actually ding smething. That means when a glfer tells himself, “Dn’t hit the ball int the water.” His mind sees the image f the ball flying int the water.     I asked the lawyer again hw she wanted t appear at her first trial. This time she said: “I want t lk self-assured.” T her, a self-assured figure meant mving cnfidently arund the curt rm, using cnvincing bdy language and raising her vice. She als imagined a skillful clsing argument and a winning trial.
    A few weeks after this psitive stress rehearsal, the yung lawyer did win.
