Since the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973, it has helped hundreds f species avid extinctin in the United States. The strng cnservatin plicy has been used as a mdel in ther cuntries. But it’s nt as successful as it culd be, a new study finds.
Researchers have discvered mst species are nt being prtected until their numbers have becme s lw that their chance f recvery is slim.
“The ESA is an incredibly pwerful, ambitius law fr prtecting ur endangered wildlife. Yet, fr decades, the agency primarily respnsible fr perating the ESA — the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — has been starved f resurces,” lead authr Erich Eberhard says.
“As a result, we are very slw t give species the prtectin that they deserve. We typically wait until species are extremely rare and thus at extreme risk f extinctin, and then, when a species is finally listed, the USFWS is straining its resurces t try t recver it.”
In 1993, a study fund that few species received prtectin under the ESA until their ppulatins became very small. Fr the new study, researchers repeated the methds used in the earlier research t see whether prtectins have becme better since the prblem was first nted. They als lked at trends in “wait times” — the amunt f time between when a species is identified as ptentially needing prtectin and when it actually receives prtectin under the ESA.
“Our analysis suggests that, in the nearly 30 years since attentin was first brught t this prblem, we have nt becme mre active in prtecting endangered species,” says Eberhard.
The researchers fund that the ppulatin sizes f species when they first became prtected under the ESA are nt statistically different frm thse in the 1993 study. They als discvered that there are lng wait times between when a species is identified as likely needing prtectin and when they actually receive them.
“I can say that ur study paints the current state f the ESA as a bit f cautinary (告诫的) tale fr the strng cnservatin plicy,” says Eberhard.
    32. What prblem des the USFWS have prtecting endangered species?
    A. It takes ineffective measures.B. It is lacking in resurces.
    C. It can’t get timely infrmatin.D. It is an irrespnsible rganizatin.
    33. What is the purpse f the new study?
    A. T try ut new ways t prtect endangered species.
    B. T find ut the exact number f endangered species.
    C. T check the time needed t save endangered species.
    D. T see if endangered species have been better prtected.
    34. Hw can the study help with animal cnservatin?
    A. It fund ut many mre endangered species.B. It pinted ut the directin fr the USFWS t act n.
    C. It prved the rle f the public in cnservatin.D. It shwed sme effective ways t prtect animals.
    35. Which f the fllwing culd be the best title fr the text?
    A. The USFWS Needs Strnger LawsB. The ESA Has Achieved Great Success
    C. New Cnversatin Laws Are n the WayD. Endangered Species Act Isn’t Wrking Well

When heading t bed, peple ften d sme things t prmte sleep, such as drinking a cup f warm milk. 36 The answer is varied.
“One reasn that warm milk makes peple sleepy is that it reminds yu f the persn wh was kind enugh t give it t yu when yu were yunger,” said psychlgist Michael. 37 On the mlecular level, the tryptphan (色氨酸) in milk has prperties(属性) which can prmte sleeping. 38 Our bdies use the tryptphan frm fd, alng with ther things, t prduce the brain chemical sertnin, which is transfrmed int melatnin, a hrmne that helps yu sleep.
39 That’s because the bdy transfrms it int hrmnes that enhance sleep. But in reality, it wuld take a lt f tryptphan t make a persn feel sleepy. Even if a persn drinks that much milk, it's unclear whether the high amunt f tryptphan wuld be enugh t make him r her feel sleepy. Milk, after all, cntains many ther materials that cmpete t enter ur brain thrugh the bld. Thus, the sleep -prmting effect f milk is limited.
As fr the temperature f the milk, there aren’t any studies that suggest milk has t be warm fr any f its psychlgical r physical effects t kick in. 40 It can in turn help t relax the bdy.
    A. The calming assciatin may help t lwer pre-sleep anxiety.
    B. In thery, taking fd rich in tryptphan can make us feel sleepy.
    C. The bdy needs the tryptphan in the milk t calm urselves dwn.
    D. Can the temperature f the milk accelerate the speed f ur sleeping?
    E. The bdy cannt prduce tryptphan, s peple must get it frm the diet.
    F. But the warmth f the milk may help raise ur internal bdy temperatures.
    G. But is there any scientific evidence that drinking warm milk will make yu sleepy?

A self-discvery Jurney at “Knw Yurself”
Last Friday, I had the privilege f attending the "Knw Yurself" event rganized by ur schl's Psychlgy Club-a jurney int self-discvery that was bth enriching and enjyable.
The event, held in the schl library, aimed t guide students in gaining a deeper understanding f themselves and prmting mental well-being. The activities were diverse, ranging frm grup discussins n stress-cping strategies t enjyable psychlgical tests that unveiled persnality traits and behaviral tendencies.
Thrugh these activities, I gained insights int my cping mechanisms under pressure. I believe such experiences are invaluable fr all participants and will have a psitive impact n ur future grwth.
