In Shark Bay, Australia, bttlense dlphins that aren’t related have been bserved teaching each ther a new way t use a tl, a behavir that until nw scientists have fund nly in humans and ther great apes. It’s als the first knwn example f dlphins transmitting such knwledge within the same generatin, rather than between generatins.
In a practice called shelling, dlphins will chase fish int abandned giant snail shells n the seaflr, then bring the shells t the surface, and shake them with their nses, remving the water and catching the fish that fall ut.
“The fact that shelling is scially transmitted amng dlphin peers rather than between mther and child sets an imprtant milestne, senir study authr Michael Krutzen said.
In 2007, Krutzen launched a study f Shark Bay’s dlphins, identifying mre than a thusand individual dlphins ver 11 years. During this time, scientists bserved shelling 42 times amng 19 dlphins. Half f these events ccurred after a marine heatwave in 2011, which may have caused a die-ff amng giant sea snails, leading t mre shells n the seaflr.
Because f the length f their study, scientists had very detailed knwledge f the individual dlphins’ family histries, ages, sexes and behavir, making it easier fr them t study the 19 dlphins that practiced shelling. Fr instance, they bserved that the dlphins that practised shelling hung ut with ther shellers, s it’s likely that they cpied frm thse they spent time with, says study lead authr Snja Wild.
The team knew that envirnmental factrs-specifically, whether shelling dlphins did s simply because they lived in a shell-rich area — culd explain this peer-t-peer transmissin. A genetic characteristic amng a family grup was anther pssible reasn.
S the researchers cmbined their data n the dlphin sightings, as well as genetic and envirnmental data, int a cmputer mdel that prpsed varius ways shelling culd be transmitted between dlphins. The mdel that supprted hrizntal (横向的) transmissin was the strngest utcme, accrding t the study.

DNA testing is ne f mdern medicine’s mst significant breakthrughs. Tday, anyne can receive persnalized infrmatin abut their genes (基因) and ancestry with just a little saliva (唾液). Nw, a Seattle-based cmpany is wrking t bring equally deep analysis t the trillins f prteins within ur bdies.
Nautilus Bitechnlgy, a cmpany funded in 2016 by Seattle’s Sujal Patel and the San Francisc Bay Area’s Parag Mallick, is develping a device t identify and cunt 95% f the different types f prteins in a bilgical sample.
Human cells can cntain rughly 20,000 different types f prteins, with crucial functins ranging frm digestin t disease prtectin. Each cell has a varying amunt f each prtein. The cmpany wants t measure the key machinery (机制) inside cells with a level f detail that has never been dne befre. Existing tls, it says. can nly measure up t 8% f the different types f prteins in bld samples.
S why cunt prteins at all? Research shws healthy cells and diseased cells have differing amunts and frms f each prtein. Fr example, cancer cells may have mre f Prtein A than Prtein B. Knwing that might help in tw ways: First, dctrs culd lk fr higher Prtein A levels t detect cancer early. Secnd, researchers culd better design drugs t target Prtein A.
Nautilus says such prtein measurements, which are unique t every persn and change thrughut peple’s lives, will nt nly help dctrs identify mre specific frms f disease but als help pharmaceutical (制药) cmpanies find mre precise drugs with fewer side effects.
While ther cmpanies als are building new prtein analysis machines, experts and prspective custmers have expressed excitement ver Nautilus’s apprach. Mallick, chief scientist f Nautilus and the brain behind its technlgy, is cnfident: “It’s nt every day when yu get…t wrk n smething. That’s the pprtunity t change all f bilgy.”
    12. What is the Seattle-based cmpany ding?
    A. Trying t cunt the amunts f bld cells.
    B. Examining DNA fr persnalized infrmatin.
    C. Develping a device t analyze peple’s prteins.
    D. Revealing mre abut ur ancestry with DNA testing.
    13. What makes the inventin f the device pssible?
    A. Precise drugs are guaranteed.B. Cell analysis techniques develp fast.
    C. Prteins are much easier t be analyzed.D. Prtein amunts and frms vary frm cell t cell.
    14. In which area will the device be helpful?
    A. Disease mnitring and machine designB. Disease detectin and drug develpment.
    C. Disease preventin and targeted treatment.D. Disease treatment and side effect preventin.
    15. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Cmbining DNA Testing with Prtein AnalysisB. Setting a New Example f Medical Slutin
    C. Creating Opprtunities fr Changing BilgyD. Analyzing Prteins fr New Medical Breakthrugh
