Fashin brand JUMA recently shwed its newest cllectin at a wrkshp in Shanghai. Eighteen clthing items frm the cllectin, including jump-suits, jackets, shirts and dresses, were made frm recycled plastic bttles. “We realized that billins f water bttles were being thrwn int landfills and ceans every year and that these bttles take hundreds f years t decmpse(分解). We thught we shuld use them t create ur clthes and help the envirnment,” said Alia Juma, the cmpany?s design directr.
Many ther fashin cmpanies are finding similar ways t save ur planet these days. The prcess is rather simple. First, the plastic bttles are washed and cut int small pieces. Then they are melted and shaped int small balls. The balls are melted again t frm thread. Peple can then use the thread t make different kinds f clthes.
Accrding t Juma, it takes 67,000 bttles t create 1 tn f thread. This reduces carbn emissins by 4.2 tns and water use by 6.2 tns cmpared with the nrmal way f making thread. “4 bttles can make a pillwcase. 5 can make a shirt, 10 a dress and 20 a shrt cat,” Juma said.
Sme peple might have dubts abut wearing smething made ut f plastic bttles. But accrding t Causeartist, a website that fcuses n innvatin, clthes made frm plastic culd be even better than nyln and plyester. Plastic thread can be made int different textures, such as cttn, silk r even wl. “The mre we learn abut recycled fabrics, the mre we realize that they wrk just like ther fabrics. Yu can get a heavier cttn feeling r a silky feeling by weaving the yarns int different textures and using different washing methds. There is actually a lt yu can d with this fabric,” Juma said.
