Velcr is a hk-and-lp (粘扣的) device that is cmmnly fund n a wide range f prducts, such as shes, jackets, and a lt f ther equipment in ffices, kitchens, and garages. It’s als the name f the cmpany that riginally created the "thing"generally knwn as Velcr.

One fine mrning in 1948, Mestral went fr a walk with his dg. After returning frm the walk, he fund that sme seeds gt stuck t the dg’s fur. Hwever, the man’s attentin was turned t his wn trusers, where many similar seeds were als attached.
Upn clser examinatin, he nticed that there were many small hks in the seeds that stuck firmly t the lps in the fabric f his trusers. The first idea fr what wuld eventually becme Velcr struck him like lightning. If he culd artificially recreate the same thing, by making pairs f hks-and-lps that stick t each ther firmly, then there wuld be almst n need t tie things up all the time t secure them, nr wuld zippers, which were quite ppular in thse days, be necessary any lnger. He decided t call the prduct he frmed Velcr.
Like many inventins, Velcr als faced a great deal f criticism, but Mestral std by his design and cntinued t make structural changes t enhance its bnding strength. He wrked with a Frenchmah t cme up with a perfect hk-and-lp device. Mestral patented Velcr in 1955.
Velcr didn’t d very well initially; much f that was due t its lack f aesthetic appeal. It came in dull clrs and ften lked quite "unattractive". But sn, even NASA helped t bst Velcr’s image by using it in a lt f equipment that went int space alng with astrnauts.

As I walked int the Gerge Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theater, I felt as thugh I had stepped int a time machine. On the way t the traditinal, ld-timey bx ffice, tns f vintage(复古的)mvie psters and the theater entrance made me feel like I was n Bradway. As everyne tk their seats, an lder gentleman wh lked like he walked straight ut f the 1920s gave the attendees a histrical backgrund f the film we were seeing—The Barker.
The film itself, which was released in 1928, is cnsidered a "part-talkie". Befre films included synchrnized(同步的)sund, films were played with live accmpaniment and cntained subtitles t add cntext. With the inventin f synchrnized sund, films slwly added talking dialgue in scenes thrughut the film; these films were cnsidered "part-talkies".
The Barker, which explres the lives f carnival wrkers, is the talking debut(首次登场)f all f the main cast. The film was revlutinary nt nly fr the technlgy but als fr the actrs. My film experience cnsists f mstly talkies, s when I finished The Barker, I felt like I witnessed smething brand new fr the first time.
The experience I had at Dryden Theater was unlike any mvie-ging experience I had ever had. The music, the film, and the atmsphere itself were cmpletely unique! Since viewing films has gradually been switched t streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has bth increased the accessibility f films and stripped us f reliance n a scial experience t watch a mvie—ne that attending The Barker reminded me f.
"Barbenheimer", a phenmenn that cntrasts the bvius differences in the recently released mvies Barbie and Oppenheimer, allwed us t return t the mvie-ging adventure. Finally, everyne wanted big screens and surrund sund rather than the tiny screens in bedrms. Mre imprtantly, we were all able t interact with a piece f cntent alngside ther peple. "Barbenheimer" brught back the pastime f ging t the cinema—ne that I think we shuld cntinue t engage in. I say we take a page ut f the 1920s playbk and return t the cinema.
    28. Wh made the audience f The Barker knw better abut its backgrund?
    A. A star wh was cast in the mvie.
    B. A man wh had a lk f the past.
    C. A staff member wrking at the bx ffice.
    D. A gentleman walking frm the last century.

    C."Part-talkies"invlve live accmpaniment.
    D. The films befre The Barker are "part-talkies".

    A. Accused. B. Infrmed. C. Rbbed. D. Warned.
    31. What des the authr suggest?

    B. Seeing the film The Barker.
    C. Having mre big screen experiences.
    D. Interacting mre with peple arund us.
    D
Birds rely n their keen sense f hearing t detect prey(猎物)and identify ther birds n the basis f their sngs. In fact, birds have better hearing than humans, s they hear with much mre detail. S hw d birds hear?
Birds and humans bth have an inner ear and a middle ear. Hwever, birds differ frm humans in that they lack an external ear structure. Where humans have an uter ear rgan, birds have a funnel-shaped pening that functins as their uter ear, lcated n each side f their head. These penings are usually psitined behind and slightly belw a bird’s eyes and are prtected by sft feathers.
The psitin f a bird’s head als plays a rle in its hearing abilities. Scientists have determined that nises register at different frequencies n each side f the bird’s head. Depending n the angle frm which the nise riginates, it registers with a certain frequency in the left eardrum but with a different frequency in the right eardrum. This allws the bird t lcate a sund’s rigin.
Fr example, wls are knwn fr their extremely accurate hearing, which helps them lcate prey at night. This hearing ability is due in part t the unbalanced arrangement f the ear penings, with ne pening being lwer than the ther. Sunds register in these penings at slightly different times. Owls can use this time difference, which is nly 30 millinths f a secnd, t determine whether the sunds are cming frm their left r their right. Other birds f prey have flaps in frnt f their ears that help them determine whether sunds are cming frm abve them r belw them. Sme wls d appear t have ears n the tp f their head, but thse are actually feathers cntrlled by small muscles under the skin that d nt affect their hearing at all.
    32. What is the difference between birds and humans accrding t paragraph 2?
    A. Ears’ structure. B. Ears’ functin.
    C. Ears’ psitin. D. Ears’ sensitivity.
    33. What des the underlined wrd "This" in paragraph 3 prbably refer t?
    A. The angle f nise surces.
    B. The bird’s unique ear structure.
    C. The intensity f the sund arund the bird.
    D. The difference in frequencies between the eardrums.
    34. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
    A. The flaps f birds f prey have little impact n their hearing.
    B. Owls determine the directin f sund based n their feathers.
    C. Different birds have varying abilities t judge the directin f sund.
    D. Many birds have unbalanced psitins f the ear penings besides wls.
    35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. The Secret f Owls’ Hearing B. Special Ear Structure f Birds
    C. Different Hearing Systems f Birds D. Remarkable Hearing Abilities f Birds
