Fr six hurs we sht thrugh the landscape f the Kar desert in Suth Africa. Just rcks and sand and baking sun. Knwing ur jurney was ending, Daniel and I just wanted t remember all we had seen and dne. He used a camera. I used wrds. I had already finished three ntebks and was int the furth, a beautiful leather ntebk I’d bught in a market in Mzambique.
Suthern Africa was full f stries. And visins. We were almst drunk n sensatins. The raring f the water at Victria Falls, the impssible silence f the Okavang Delta in Btswana. And then the ther things: dgs in the streets, whle families in Swet living in ne rm, a kilmetre frm clean water.
As we drve twards the setting sun, a quietness fell ver us. The rad was empty—we hadn’t seen anther car fr hurs. And as I drve, smething caught my eye, smething mving next t me. I glanced in the mirrr f the car; I glanced sideways t the right, and that was when I saw them. Next t us, by the side f the rad, thirty, frty wild hrses were racing the car, a clud f dust rising behind them—brwn, muscular hrses almst clse enugh t tuch them, t smell their ht breath. I didn’t knw hw lng they had been there next t us.
I shuted t Dan: “Lk!”, but he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet. They raced the car fr a few secnds, then disappeared far behind us, a memry f heric frms in the red landscape. When Daniel wke up an hur later I tld him what had happened.
“Wild hrses?” he said. “Why didn’t yu wake me up?”
“I tried. But they were gne after a few secnds.”
“Are yu sure yu didn’t dream it?”
“Yu were the ne wh was sleeping!”
“Typical,” he said. “The best phts are the nes we never take.”

When I revealed that 1 was planning t travel arund Britain by public transprt, everyne I saw said, 'Gsh, yu're brave!' but it never ccurred t me t g any ther way. Driving in Britain is such a dull experience these days. There are far t many cars n the rad, nearly duble what there were when I first came here, and in thse days peple didn't actually drive their cars. They just parked them in the driveway and cleaned them nce every week r s. Abut twice a year they wuld “get the car ut” fr a pleasant drive t visit relatives r take a trip.
Nw everyne drives everywhere fr everything, which I dn't understand because there isn*t a single feature f driving in Britain that has even the tiniest measure f enjyment in it. Just cnsider the average multi-strey(多层的)car park. Yu drive arund fr ages, and eventually find a space that is exactly tw inches wider than average car. Then, because yu are parked next t a pillar(柱子),yu have t climb ver the seats and end up squeezing ut f the passenger dr, in the prcess transferring all the dirt frm the side f yur car t the back f yur smart new jacket. Then yu g hunting fr sme distant pay-and-display machine, which desn't give change.
And that's just ne tiny part f the driving experience. There are all the ther annyances f mtring, like traffic lights n busy rundabuts(环形交通枢纽)that never let yu advance mre than 20 feet at a time, and mtrway service areas where fd is much mre expensive. Mtrized vehicles are ugly and dirty. They ccupy every pavement, turn ancient market squares int disrderly and untidy grups f metal, and cause petrl statins and ther discuraging places t appear in great number. They are hrrible and awful and 1 wanted nthing t d with them n this trip.

    A. The incnvenience f parking cars.B. The unreasnable parking fees.

    C. By fllwing the rder f time.D. By fllwing the rder f space.
    11. What wuld the authr prbably talk abut in the paragraph that fllws?
    A. The terrible places caused by vehicles.B. The bther caused by driving cars.

Ppularizatin has in sme cases changed the riginal meaning f emtinal (情感的) intelligence. Many peple nw misunderstand emtinal intelligence as almst everything desirable in a persn's makeup that cannt be measured by an IQ test, such as character, mtivatin, cnfidence, mental stability, ptimism and “peple skills.” Research has shwn that emtinal skills may cntribute t sme f these qualities, but mst f them mve far beynd skill-based emtinal intelligence.
We prefer t describe emtinal intelligence as a specific set f skills that can be used fr either gd r bad purpses. The ability t accurately understand hw thers are feeling may be used by a dctr t find hw best t help her patients, while a cheater might use it t cntrl ptential victims. Being emtinally intelligent des nt necessarily make ne a mral persn.
Althugh ppular beliefs regarding emtinal intelligence run far ahead f what research can reasnably supprt, the verall effects f the publicity have been mre beneficial than harmful. The ppularizatin f emtinal intelligence has helped bth the public and researchers re-evaluate the functinality f emtins and hw they serve peple adaptively in everyday life.
Althugh the cntinuing ppular appeal f emtinal intelligence is desirable, we hpe that such attentin will excite a greater interest in the scientific and schlarly study f emtin. It is ur hpe that in cming decades, advances in science will ffer new perspectives (视角) frm which t study hw peple manage their lives. Emtinal intelligence, with its fcus n bth head and heart, may serve t pint us in the right directin.
    12. What is a cmmn misunderstanding f emtinal intelligence?
    A. It can be measured by an IQ test.B. It helps t exercise a persn’s mind.
    C. It includes a set f emtinal skills.D. It refers t a persn’s psitive qualities.
    13. Why des the authr mentin “dctr” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?
    A. T explain a rule.B. T clarify a cncept.
    C. T present a fact.D. T make a predictin.
    14. What is the authr’s attitude t the ppularizatin f emtinal intelligence?
    A. Favrable.B. Intlerant.
    C. Dubtful.D. Unclear.
    15. What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut cncerning emtinal intelligence?
    A. Its appeal t the public.B. Expectatins fr future studies.
    C. Its practical applicatin.D. Scientists with new perspectives.

What did the hrse think, as he sped thrugh the night? Did he get tired? Have dubts? Did he want t quit? I sympathized immediately. I gt tired. I had dubts. I wanted t quit. But, like Revere’s hrse, I kept ging. I wrked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my lder sister t crrect my grammar. I checked ut a half dzen bks n Paul Revere frm the library. I even read a few f them.
When I handed in the essay t my teacher, he read it, laughed ut lud, and said, “Great. Nw, write it again.” I wrte it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thught f winning had given way t the enjyment f writing. If I didn’t win, I wuldn’t care.
