Geffrey Everest Hintn is a British-Canadian cgnitive (认知的) psychlgist and cmputer scientist. In May 2023, Hintn annunced his leaving frm Ggle t be able t “freely speak ut abut the risks f AI”. Hintn’s wrk n neural netwrks—the methd that teaches AI t prcess data in a way similar t the human brain—supprts hw mdern chatbts like ChatGPT and Ggle Bard functin. But nw, he partly regrets making this advancement.
Hintn has been wrking n neural netwrks since he was a graduate student at the University f Edinburgh in the 1970s. Then few researchers believed in the idea. Even Hintn’s PhD advisr had his dubts. “We met nce a week,” Hintn said. “Smetimes it ended in a shuting match.”
But Hintn persisted with his wrk. In the 1980s, he and his clleagues put frward a technique called backprpagatin—an algrithm (算法) fr training machines. In 2012, he had a big breakthrugh: Hintn and tw f his students created a neural netwrk that culd analyze phts and teach itself t identify bjects. The next year, the team’s neural netwrk startup was bught by Ggle, where Hintn cntinued t wrk.

They analyzed ver 1,700 mvies fr children and teens released in theaters after 2010 t see hw many character strengths were featured in each film. The quality and success f the films were measured in different ways: hw many stars each mvie received, hw much mney each mvie made in ticket sales during the pening weekend, and audience and film critic scres.
The results? Mvies that nticeably featured character strengths tended t make mre mney n the pening weekend bth within the United States and internatinally cmpared t mvies withut character strengths: This was true even when the researchers accunted fr hw many stars the film received, and the audience and critic scres, s their success wasn’t just abut being better-quality mvies.
Qualities like perseverance, curage, and teamwrk were featured mst ften (in ver 300 films each). Geffrey Everest Hintn is a British-Canadian cgnitive (认知的) psychlgist and cmputer scientist. In May 2023, Hintn annunced his leaving frm Ggle t be able t “freely speak ut abut the risks f AI”.
