Geffrey Everest Hintn is a British-Canadian cgnitive (认知的) psychlgist and cmputer scientist. In May 2023, Hintn annunced his leaving frm Ggle t be able t “freely speak ut abut the risks f AI”. Hintn’s wrk n neural netwrks—the methd that teaches AI t prcess data in a way similar t the human brain—supprts hw mdern chatbts like ChatGPT and Ggle Bard functin. But nw, he partly regrets making this advancement.
Hintn has been wrking n neural netwrks since he was a graduate student at the University f Edinburgh in the 1970s. Then few researchers believed in the idea. Even Hintn’s PhD advisr had his dubts. “We met nce a week,” Hintn said. “Smetimes it ended in a shuting match.”
But Hintn persisted with his wrk. In the 1980s, he and his clleagues put frward a technique called backprpagatin—an algrithm (算法) fr training machines. In 2012, he had a big breakthrugh: Hintn and tw f his students created a neural netwrk that culd analyze phts and teach itself t identify bjects. The next year, the team’s neural netwrk startup was bught by Ggle, where Hintn cntinued t wrk.
Fr years, Hintn believed neural netwrks were nt as gd as the way human brains functin, but he’s recently started thinking differently. He nce thught it wuld take up t 50 years fr the technlgy t utsmart humans, but he nw predicts it’ll be just 5 t 20. Hintn’s immediate cncerns are that fake text, pictures and vides prduced by AI will make regular peple unable t distinguish them frm reality. Eventually, this technlgy culd be used by humans t influence public pinin. He believes that AI culd avid its limits and begin making peple d what it wants by learning hw humans cntrl r influence thers.
Hwever, Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist wh wn the 2018 Turing Award with Hintn, has a different pinin. “I believe that intelligent machines will lead t a new renaissance (复兴) fr humanity, a new era f enlightenment,” LeCun said.
    24. What can we knw abut Geffrey Everest Hintn?
    A. He struggled a lt at Ggle befre leaving.B. He shwed little interest in AI at cllege.

Antarctica is the cldest cntinent, s what is the cldest city in the wrld? That hnr belngs t the Russian city f Yakutsk. Lcated in Siberia, ne f the wrld’s cldest and mst prly ppulated regins, Yakutsk is hme t arund 336,200 peple, many f whm wrk fr Alrsa, a cmpany that runs a diamnd mine in the city. Temperatures in Yakutsk have reached minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 60 degrees Celsius). Sme residents insist they have experienced much clder days, but they have been unable t prve it because the thermmeter (温度计) nly reads dwn as far as -63℃ (minus 81.4℉), accrding t an interview by the BBC.
Hwever, while Yakutsk is the cldest city, there are ther, less-ppulus permanently inhabited places that are even mre freezing. Oymyakn, a Russian settlement f arund 500 peple, reached a frsty minus 96.2℉ (minus 71.2℃) in 1924. Smewhat surprisingly, Yakutsk and Oymyakn aren’t that clse t each ther. “Siberia is s cld due t a cmbinatin f high latitude and it being such a large land mass,” said Alex DeCaria, a meterlgy prfessr at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Glbal temperature extremes—bth high and lw—tend t ccur ver cntinents because land heats up and cls dwn faster than the ceans d. In the case f Siberia, snw and ice cver als play a rle, as they help keep the regin cl by reflecting the incming slar radiatin back int space. This cmbinatin f factrs has led t the creatin f a large, semi-permanent high-pressure zne frming ver Siberia in the winter, knwn as the “Siberian High”, which results in very cld surface temperatures.
With specific reference t the cnditins in Yakutsk and Oymyakn, tpgraphy (地形学) als plays a part. “These places are in lcal valleys. Oymyakn, in particular, is surrunded by relatively high muntain ranges,” explained Juni Raisanen, a senir lecturer at the University f Helsinki in Finland. “The s-called ‘cld air lakes’ easily frm under calm winter cnditins. These pckets f cld, relatively ‘heavy’ air can becme trapped clse t the valley bttm, which helps t shelter the cld air lakes frm mixing with warmer air,” Raisanen nted.
    28. Why culdn’t Yakutsk residents prve temperature there can be much lwer than minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit?
    A. Because there is n weather reprt in the area.B. Because they can’t affrd the tls t measure temperature.
    C. Because thermmeters can’t stand the cldness.D. Because the temperature is beynd the thermmeter’s limit.
    29. Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE abut Oymyakn?
    A. It is situated nt far frm Yakutsk.
    B. It is a place even clder than Yakutsk.
    C. There is n peple t permanently live there.
    D. Mst peple there wrk fr a cmpany that runs a diamnd mine.
    30. What cntributes t Siberia’s cldness accrding t the text?
    a. Its high latitude.b. Snw and ice cver.
    c. Its large and vast land.d. Its psitin far frm the cntinent.
    A. abcB. abdC. bedD. acd
    31. What is the main idea f the text?
    A. Why Siberia is s cld.
    B. What the cldest city in the wrld is.
    C. Hw peple live in the cld places.

Mvies fr kids and teens aren’t nly designed t entertain. They can als include messages abut what’s right and wrng, what actins make a her r bad guy, and hw t deal with mral challenges. The quality and success f the films were measured in different ways: hw many stars each mvie received, hw much mney each mvie made in ticket sales during the pening weekend, and audience and film critic scres.
The results? Mvies that nticeably featured character strengths tended t make mre mney n the pening weekend bth within the United States and internatinally cmpared t mvies withut character strengths: This was true even when the researchers accunted fr hw many stars the film received, and the audience and critic scres, s their success wasn’t just abut being better-quality mvies.
Qualities like perseverance, curage, and teamwrk were featured mst ften (in ver 300 films each). But qualities like humility (谦逊) and integrity (正直) were less cmmnly highlighted (in fewer than 100 films each). “These are the character strengths that children struggle with the mst, and s creatrs may be missing an pprtunity t help children where they need it mst,” explain the researchers. The reprt als fund mvies made fr 13- t 18-year-lds had fewer character strengths cmpared t mvies fr yunger children.
“Teens are at a critical stage where they are easily influenced by their scial envirnments, including media,” explain the researchers. “There is a clear gap in the industry fr cntent directed at teens that prmtes psitive character strengths t help yuth s they can better deal with the key challenges and changes they are experiencing.”
    32. What d The Hate U Give and WALL-E have in cmmn?
    A. Bth intend t criticize racism.B. Bth are likely t develp values.
    C. Bth fcus n envirnmental issues.D. Bth are mainly designed t entertain.
    33. What did the reprt find abut the mvies featuring character strengths?
    A. They received mre negative film reviews.B. They gt lwer audience and critic scres.
    C. They gained impressive ticket sales.D. They were mainly targeted at verseas audience.
    34. What can we learn abut the quality “integrity”?
