On June 3, the United States Fish & Wildlife Service（USFWS）annunced that it wuld prtect the triclred bats. The animal wuld be listed under the Endangered Species Act. This fllws a similar annuncement, made in March, t prtect the endangered nrthern lng-eared bats. The tw kinds f bats are in danger, mainly because f an illness called white-nse syndrme（综合症）.
“Bats play such an imprtant rle in keeping a healthy ecsystem.” USFWS directr Martha Williams said. “But white-nse syndrme is destrying bats.” she added.
White-nse syndrme is caused by a fungus（真菌）. It is knwn t influence nly bats, shwing up n the animal’s nse and wings. The fungus grws in places that are cld, dark, and wet, like caves. As it hurts a bat’s skin, the animal’s behavir starts t change. The bat becmes mre active than nrmal, wasting the energy it needs t live.
Wrldwide, there are mre than 1, 400 kinds f bats. Mst bats are insectivres, which means they eat insects. In a single night, bats can eat insects f “up t half their weight.” This is gd news fr farmers, since bats eat insects that harm crps. Accrding t the USFWS, the animals help U.S. farmers save mre than $3 billin a year in insect cntrl.
Nwadays there is n treatment fr white-nse syndrme. But scientists are develping ways t help bats. A 2018 study fund that a special light can kill the fungus. He was living in Côte d’Ivire, a cuntry n the cast f West Africa, where plastic is a big envirnmental prblem, cmpared with water and air pllutin. Côte d’Ivire’s biggest city, Abidjan, prduces mre than 300 tns f plastic rubbish a day, and nly abut 5% is recycled. “Hw can we turn plastic int smething useful?” Kamp wndered.
S Kamp, wh wrks fr UNICEF, the United Natins Children’s Fund, ggled, researched, and then nticed a cmpany in Clmbia, a cuntry in Suth America. Plastic pllutin is a prblem there, t. Cncepts Plástics, the Clmbian cmpany that Kamp read abut nline, recycles plastic waste and turns it int big, Leg-like bricks（砖）fr building schls and huses.
Next, Kamp went t Clmbia t learn abut the cmpany in persn. He tured schls that were built with its bricks and the factry where the bricks were made. “Cncepts Plástics gave us a slutin.” Kamp said. He thught it culd help with mre than just the plastic prblem. It culd als imprve children’s educatin.
Accrding t UNICEF, 1.6 millin children in Côte d’Ivire dn’t g t schl. One reasn is that there aren’t enugh classrms. Fr kids wh d g t schl, classrms are ften very crwded. Kids ften sit n the flr and can’t stand up because there isn’t rm t mve arund.
In 2018, UNICEF built its first classrms in Abidjan, using bricks prduced in Clmbia by Cncepts Plástics. Right away, the lcal educatin imprved a lt. On June 3, the United States Fish & Wildlife Service（USFWS）annunced that it wuld prtect the triclred bats. The animal wuld be listed under the Endangered Species Act.
