As the saying ges, “Give a man a fish, and yu feed him fr a day. Teach a man t fish, and yu feed him fr a lifetime.” This is the way the charity rganizatin Heifer Internatinal (国际小母牛慈善组织) wants t end wrld hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went t Spain t help peple in need. He tried t feed the peple with milk. But it seemed that there wuld never be enugh milk. It made him think that what they needed was “nt a cup, but a cw”.
Dan West returned t America. He wrked tgether with sme friends t find ways t end hunger. He believed giving animals and prviding training wuld stp wrld hunger. With his help, Heifer Internatinal was set up.
On Heifer Internatinal’s website, yu will see a list f animals like cws, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. Yu can ffer help by buying sme animals fr ne certain family. Thse animals will have babies. With mre and mre animals, these families will be able t supprt themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass n the act f kindness t thers. Mre imprtantly, yu are buying the resurces (资源) fr prgrams run by Heifer Internatinal t help mre families.
The prgrams als help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal’s first female ( 雄性) baby t anther in need. Heifer Internatinal als prvides training n animals health and feeding. And these farmers all agree t teach thers what they have learned as anther rule.
Hwever, there is still a lng way t g. The milk may run ut. But if families have their wn cws, they can get plenty f milk t feed themselves. The rganizatin wants the farmers t g n wrking tgether, helping each ther and learning frm each ther. Maybe hunger can really be stpped.
    4. Accrding t the passage, we knw that Dan West_________.

    C. was a Spanish farmerD. helped set up Heifer Internatinal

Clin Chapman, the funder f Ltus Cars, was nce f mtr racing’s mst influential engineers. Between 1962 and 1978 Ltus wn seven Frmula One cnstructrs champinships. He summed up his philsphy as “simplify, then add lightness”. It appears t be an uncmmn insight. A paper published in Nature suggests that humans struggle with subtractive(减法的) thinking. When asked t imprve smething, they tend t suggest adding new things rather than remving what is already there, even when additins lead t subpar(低于标准的) results.
The research was mtivated by everyday bservatin rather than psychlgical thery, says Gabrielle Adams, the paper’s first authr, wh cites flk wisdm such as “less is mre” and “keep it simple”. Perhaps the need fr such reminders was evidence f a blind spt in peple’s thinking?
Alng with clleagues at the University f Virginia, Dr. Adams cnducted a series f bservatinal studies. In ne, when participants were asked t alter an essay they had written, 16% cut wrds while 80% added them. Others gave similar results. Of 827 suggestins received by the new bss f an American university fr hw the institutin culd be imprved, 581 invlved adding new things and just 70 suggested remving smething.
Having established that additin des indeed seem t be mre ppular than subtractin, the next step was t wrk ut why. One pssibility was that peple were cnsidering subtractive ptins, but deliberately chsing nt t pursue them. Anther was that they were nt even thinking f them in the first place.
Let’s enter a new set f experiments. One experiment asked participants t redesign a lpsided(不平衡的) Leg structure s that it culd supprt a huse-brick. Participants culd earn a dllar fr fixing the prblem, but each piece f Leg they added cut that reward by ten cents. Even then, nly 41% wrked ut that simplifying the structure by remving a single blck, rather than strengthening it by adding mre, which was the way t maximise the payut. Anther example, asking peple t make a glf curse wrse rather than better did nt change their preference fr additins, which suggested that many were simply nt thinking f the pssibility, at least at first.
What all this amunts t says Benjamin Cnverse, anther f the study’s authrs, is evidence fr a new entry in the list f “cgnitive biases” that skew(歪曲) hw humans think. Instead f thinking a prblem thrugh and cming up with an ideal slutin, they tend t use cgnitive shrtcuts that are fast and mstly “gd enugh” in their mind.
Such research has inspired an entire field dedicated t wrking ut when such shrtcuts lead peple astray(迷失). Dr. Adams and her clleagues, meanwhile, are keen t investigate their result thrughly. One questin is whether the preference fr additin is inbrn r learned.
    8. Why des the authr mentin the stry f Clin Chapman?
    A. T prvide evidence.
    B. T highlight the experience.
    C. T present backgrund infrmatin.
    D. T intrduce the tpic f the passage.
    9. Which f the fllwing is crrect accrding t the passage?
    A. Peple prefer additins t subtractins in mst situatins
    B. The philsphy “less is mre” is well-received fr lng.
    C. Strengthening the structure is the way t maximize the payut.
    D. Peple tend t use shrtcuts and cme up with ideal slutins.
    10. What des the study prpse?
    A. A way that peple autmatically think.
    B. A fact that peple rutinely frget.
    C. A view that shrtcuts are gd enugh.
    D. A pint that additin is always better.
    11. What are Dr. Adams and his clleagues likely t study next?
    A. The benefits f subtractins fr peple.
    B. The ways f changing hw peple think.
    C. The details f the preference fr additin.
    D. The influence f cgnitive biases n peple.
    D
Wh has n regrets abut things dne in the past? Wuldn’t it be nice if, smehw, we culd g back t change a cuple f bad decisins? This sunds like science fictin.
The laws f physics prhibit traveling back in time fr many reasns. If we did travel back in time and changed the curse f events, we wuld be altering the curse f histry. An example ften cited is the grandfather’s paradx (悖论): If yur grandfather died when he was still a high schl student, he wuldn’t have met yur grandmther and yur father and yu wuldn’t exist.
Putting humans r cnsciusness traveling back in time aside fr the mment, is there anything in science even similar? Surprisingly, yes. At the level f quantum particles (量子粒子), there is smething called Wheeler’s delayed-chice experiments that shw that actins in the present can influence the past. The experiments use smething called the wave-particle duality (波粒二象性) f light and f matter. The fact that the physical nature f quantum bjects is undetermined until it is measured. In ther wrds, this means that a particle f light r f matter can behave either as a wave (spreading ut in space) r as a particle (staying tgether) depending n the measuring devices. Lng and nging discussins abut the nature f quantum physics are still trying t wrk ut what this actually means. D ur minds determine the nature f physical reality?
Shuld we ffer fd fr thught fr the future r the past? Unfrtunately, these experiments say very little abut hw we culd interfere with the past in events relevant t the human scale. Better t think carefully abut decisins than t try t fix them backwards.
    12. What’s the purpse f mentining the paradx?
    A. T shw it is interesting.
    B. T explain Wheeler’s tests.
    C. T demnstrate time is different frm what we have knwn.
    D. T shw it’s impssible t travel back in time.
    13. What can we infer frm paragraph 3?
    A. Cnsciusness traveling back in time was tried in the experiments.
    B. Different measuring devices have the same result.
    C. Mre research is needed in the future.
    D. These experiments can determine the nature f matter.
    14. Which can best summarize the last paragraph?
    A. We shuld fcus n the present.
    B. The future fd is mre nutritius.
    C. We can change the past frm the experiments.
    D. It is never t late t make up fr mistakes.
    15. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A Is changing the past wise?
    B. Can we change the past?
    C. D ur minds determine the future?
    D. D the laws f physics ban traveling back?
