In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of their canine lust.
But why, they pleaded. “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” But we’ll do it. “Really? You’re-going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” Yes, yes and yes. “I don’t believe you.” We will. We promise.
They didn’t. From day two (everyone wanted to walk the cute puppy that first day), neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and Clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life (small, medium, and large), she calculated, “The medium one is the sucker in the pack.”
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand 一 which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she became my fifth appendage (附肢), snoring on my home-office couch as I worked, cradling against my feet as I read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched television.
Even so, part of me continued to resent walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. Not fair, I’d balk (不心甘情愿地做) silently as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.
Then one day 一 January 1, 2007, to be exact 一 my husband’s doctor uttered an unthinkable word: leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. During those six months of hospitalizations, Becky, 12 at that time, adjusted to other adults being in the house when she returned from school. My work colleagues adjusted to my taking off at a moment’s notice for medical emergencies. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained.
Save one: Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces, I declined because I knew they had their own households to deal with.
As the months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to gather my thoughts or to just be before the day’s medical drama unfolded. The evening walk was a time to shake off the day’s upsets and let the worry tracks in my head go to white noise.
When serious illness visits your household, it’s not just your daily routine and your assumptions about the future that are no longer familiar. Pretty much everyone you know acts differently.
After Joe died in 2009, Misty slept on his pillow.
I’m grateful — to a point. The truth is, after years of balking, I’ve come to enjoy my walks with Misty. As I watch her chase a squirrel, throwing her whole being into the here-and-now of an exercise that has never once ended in victory, she reminded me, too, that no matter how harsh the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some measure of joy to be extracted from the moment.

You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella.
The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp.” he said.
The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone’s using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
    47. Belyaev created the lampbrella aiming to _______.
    A. predict a heavy rain B. help people avoid getting wet in the rain
    C. check the weather forecast D. remind people to take an umbrella
    48. How does the lampbrella work?
    A. Electric motor can open or close the sensors on demand.
    B. Electric motor is controlled by the rain sensor to open the canopy.
    C. Sensors offer pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
    D. Sensors can work only three minutes.
    49. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the lampbrella?
    A. Its moving speed. B. Its appearance.
    C. Its installation. D. Its safey.
    50. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
    B. The designer will open a company in Moscow.
    C. The lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
    D. The lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.
B 48. B 49. D 50. A

由第一段中“But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. (但设计师米哈伊尔·贝利亚耶夫并不认为出门前忘记查看天气预报会导致你淋湿)”,第二段中“Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy (伞蓬) built into a street lamp. (有一次,我在圣彼得堡市中心的一条街道上开车,看到路灯照亮了试图躲避雨水的人们。我觉得在路灯上加一个雨棚是合适的)”和第三段中“Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. (然后,传感器确保雨伞在下雨时为行人提供庇护)”可知,路灯雨伞的发明是为了保护人们不受雨水淋湿。故选B项。
    【48题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中“It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. (它有一个内置的电动机,可以根据需要打开或关闭伞蓬。然后,传感器确保伞蓬在下雨时为行人提供庇护)”可知,传感器首先确保天气下雨,传递信号给电动机,电动机可按需打开或关闭伞蓬,其工作顺序应该是:传感器→电动机→伞蓬,路灯伞棚的工作原理是:电动机由雨量传感器控制,打开伞棚。故选B项。
    【49题详解】
主旨大意题。由第五段“According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. (根据设计师的说法,路灯伞棚会以相对较低的速度移动,以免对行人造成伤害。此外,它将接地,以防止可能的雷击。每一个路灯伞棚都能为几个人提供足够的住所。安装在离地2米的地方,只会对最高的行人构成危险)”可知,本段主要讲述的是路灯伞棚的安全性。故选D项。
    【50题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter. (Belyaev说,虽然没有计划将路灯伞棚投入生产,但他最近向莫斯科一个部门介绍了自己的作品,并坚称这种作品可以安装在任何有很多人走但没有雨棚的街道上)”可知,设计者Belyaev还没有计划要把路灯伞棚投入生产,C项错误,BD项未提及,但可推测出Belyaev自信得认为路灯伞棚是实用的。故选A项。
    D
When I was 17 years old I had surgery because of a disease. The day after the surgery, I awoke to find a friend of mine sitting in a chair across from my bed. I don't remember much about his visit. But I will not forget that he visited me on that day, and sat there for I don't know how long, while I was under the influence of a morphine drip (输液). We benefit greatly from our close friendships, but they are not a matter of calculable gain or loss.
Our age, what we might call the age of economics, is strongly influenced by two types of relationships that reflect the lives we are encouraged to lead. There are consumer relationships, those that we participate in for the pleasure they bring us. They are focused on the present. It is what brings immediate pleasure that matters. And there are entrepreneurial(商业的) relationships, those that we invest in, hoping they will bring us some return.
Aristotle thought that there were three types of friendship: those of pleasure, those of usefulness, and true friendship. In Pleasure Friendships, he said, “Tt is not for their character that men love ready-witted people, but because they find them pleasant.” About the usefulness friendships, he said, “Those who love each other for their utility (效用) do not love each other for themselves, but because of some good which they get from each other.”
Although we benefit from our close friendships, these friendships are not a matter of calculable gain and loss. Consumer pleasures are lasting for only a limited time. They surround us for a short period and then they fade, like a drug. Entrepreneur friendship, when successful, leads to the victory of personal gain.
It is precisely the non-economic character that is threatened in a society in which each of us is offered only the choices of ownership, shopping, competition and growth. It is threatened when we are led to believe that friendships without obvious recognizable gain are, in the economic sense, irrational Friendships are not without reason, perhaps, but they are certainly without that particular reason. Shared experience, not just everyday amusement or advancement, is the true basis of friendship.
    51. The author mentions his operation in the first paragraph to ______.
    A. recall one of his best friends B. advise people to visit sick friends
    C. introduce the topic of true friendship D. talk about the experience of surgery
    52. Consumer relationships center on ______.
    A. the sharing of joy and sorrow B. mutual support in times of trouble
    C. personal gain or personal loss D. immediate pleasure
    53. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument by ______.
    A. explaining three types of friendship B. discussing questions
    C. analyzing causes and effects D. providing examples and facts
54 The author seems to support the idea that ______.
    A. friendships are a matter of calculable gain or loss
    B. there are no specific reasons for friendship
    C. short-term pleasure is the center of friendship
    D. everyday amusement is the true basis of friendship
    55. The best title for the text would be ______.
    A. Friendship in Modern Times B. Friendship in Economic Recession
    C. Friendship in the Age of Economics D. Friendship in a Fast Paced Life
C 52. D 53. A 54. B 55. C

It is threatened when we are led to believe that friendships without obvious recognizable gain are, in the economic sense, irrational

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong tum took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed a beat-up (破旧的) black Mustang (福特野马汽车) pulled over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire.
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
    56. What made the author’s brother take a wrong turn? (no more than 10 words)
    __________________________________________________________________________
    57. Why was the brother annoyed? (no more than 10 words)
    __________________________________________________________________________
    58. Why did the young guy call the author and his brother “a breath of fresh air”? (no more than 15 words)
    __________________________________________________________________________
    59. Why did the author admire his brother after the incident? (no more than 25 words)
    __________________________________________________________________________
60 Have you ever crossed such a bridge? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)
    __________________________________________________________________________

    57. Because of the mistake and the needless pay.
    58. Because they helped him with his flat tire.
    59. Because his brother can turn annoyance over the mistake into positive energy and find a chance to help even in a negative situation.
    60. Yes. I have because I thought they met more serious trouble than I had.
根据首段中的“My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.(我和哥哥一起开车回家,我们开始聊天。因为这种分心,我哥哥拐错了弯。)”可知,作者与哥哥开车回家时聊天导致分神而走错了路。故答案为Being focused on the conversation。
根据第二段“Unfortunately, the wrong tum took us toward a bridge and, we had no way of turning back My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.(不幸的是,我们转错了方向,走到了一座桥上,我们没有办法回头。他显然对这个错误和不必要的4美元浪费感到沮丧。)”可知,由于走错了路还要额外支付4美元的费用,这让哥哥很懊恼。故答案为Because of the mistake and the needless pay。
根据第四段中的“My brother helped him change the flat.(我哥哥帮他换了车胎。)”以及划线句子后的“and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along.(他一直感谢我们,因为如果没有我们,他真的会陷入困境。)” Because they helped him with his flat tire。
根据尾段中的“He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart.(他能把对错误的烦恼转化为积极的能量。即使是在消极的情况下,他也能看到帮助的机会(我完全错过了!),这只能来自于冷静的头脑和开放的心。)”可知,作者的哥哥把困扰转换成积极的能量,在自己深陷困境时,仍然选择去帮助需要帮助的人,所有这一切应来自于冷静的头脑和豁达的心胸,这是作者最佩服哥哥的地方,也是作者想要做到的事情。故答案为Because his brother can turn annoyance over the mistake into positive energy and find a chance to help even in a negative situation。
根据尾段中的“He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.(他能把对错误的烦恼转化为积极的能量。即使是在消极的情况下,他也能看到帮助的机会(我完全错过了!),这只能来自于冷静的头脑和开放的心。那就是我们要走过的桥。)”可知,本文讲述的是作者哥哥能在自己深陷困境时仍向他人伸出援手,在我看来,当其他人有比自己更大的困难时,我们都应该向对方伸出援手。故答案为Yes, I have crossed the bridge because I thought they met more serious trouble than I had。

Dear Sir Madam,
It’s a great pleasure to know that your website will launch a new column to introduce China to foreigners via vlog.
This is a great opportunity to introduce various Chinese cities to foreigners and help them better understand contemporary China. I would like to apply to serve as a vlog volunteer in Tianjin and introduce Tianjin to the world.
First of all, being a native, I am familiar with Tianjin’s local conditions and customs, so my vlog can help foreigners get to know Tianjin’s culture and tourist attractions better. Besides, I can speak English fluently, making my vlog clear for foreigners to have a better understanding of Tianjin.
Based on local conditions and customs as well as cuisine, my vlog will use exquisite videos and beautiful music to allow foreigners to enjoy a feast of audiovisual experience, which will attract them to visit Tianjin.
I think I am qualified for the position. I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Looking forward to your earliest reply.
    Sincerely,
    Li Jin

Besides, I can speak English fluently, which can make my vlog clear for foreigners to have a better understanding of Tianjin.
1】Based on local conditions and customs as well as cuisine, my vlog will use exquisite videos and beautiful music to allow foreigners to enjoy a feast of audiovisual experience, which will attract them to visit Tianjin.
2】I think I am qualified for the position.
