    . Grammar and vocabulary

    Section A

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks t1o make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

Fancy a Snack? Have Some Potato Chips

There are a couple of tales about the origins of potato chips. The first is credited to George Crum, ____21____ in 1853 was cooking in a restaurant, Moon’s Lake House. A customer requested Crum’s famous fried potatoes. However, when the dish ____22____ (serve), the customer found the potatoes too thick for his liking. Crum sliced them thinner, but still they weren’t thin enough for the guest. The dish was sent back and forth several times. ____23____ (anger), Crum eventually cut the potatoes paper-thin, deep-fried them, and spread a lot of salt on them. His idea was ____24____ (make) the potatoes uneatable, but instead he invented a tasty treat completely by accident.

However, there is a recipe that came out before Crum’s invention. An 1822 cookbook The Cook’s Secrets ____25____ William Kitchiner, outlines how to make “Potatoes Fried in Slices”. It calls for cutting potatoes into thin slices and frying them in oil. There are two other similar recipes from 1824 and 1832, ____26____ of which mention Kitchiner.

Then there is the great fried vs baked debate. Fried potato chips contain a lot more oil and fat. Baked chips, however, are cooked in an oven or air fryer rather than being fried in oil. So, they’re considered the ____27____ (healthy) option. Today, a lot of health-conscious chip manufacturers love to say their chips are baked, not fried, to appeal to people who are concerned about ____28____healthy their food is.

Speaking of health-conscious people, they probably want to stay away from “Royce” chips, which are chips ____29____ (dip) in chocolate. The mix of salty and sweet is to die for, but far from healthy. ____30____ kind of flavor you prefer, there’s definitely a chip somewhere out there that has your name on it.

    Section B

Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

    A casual     B. inborn    C. downturn    D. replace    E. failing    F. limitation

    G. list    H. possibility     I. faultless    J. challenging    K. surround

    Why You Need to Fail

“Peter, I’d like you to stay for a minute after class.” Kevin teaches my favorite body conditioning class at the gym.

    “What’d I do?” I asked him.

    “It’s what you didn’t do.”

    “What didn’t I do?”

    “Fail.”

“You kept me after class for not ____31____?”

“This.” he said while imitating my ____32____ weight lifting style using weights that were obviously too light, “it’s not going to get you anywhere. A muscle only grows if you work it till it fails. You need to use more ____33____ weights. You need to fail.” Kevin is onto something.

Every time I ask a roomfull of executives to ____34____ the top five moments when their career took a leap forward, failure is always on the list. For some, it was the loss of a job. For others, it was a project that had gone bad. And for others still it was the failure of a larger system like an economic ____35____ that required them to step up.

Yet most of us spend a tremendous effort trying to avoid even the ____36____ of failure. According to doctor Carol Dweck, we have a mindset problem. If you believe that your talents are ____37____ or fixed, then you will try to avoid failure at all costs because failure is proof of your ____38____ People with a fixed mindset like to solve the same problems over and over again. Students with fixed mindsets would rather not learn new languages. CEOs with fixed mindsets would ____39____ themselves with people who agree with them. They feel smart when they get it right. But if you believe your talent grows with persistence and effort, then you seek failure as an opportunity to improve. People with growth mindsets feel smart when they are learning, not when they are ____40____.

If you have a growth mindset, then you use your failures to improve. If you have a fixed mindset, you may never fail, but neither do you learn or grow.

    . Reading Comprehension

    Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Southern long-finned pilot whales are marine mammals with a lot to say—and they may use vocalizations (发声) to outsmart a deadly enemy.

Cetaceans (鲸类动物) such as whales and dolphins communicate through sound to find food and mates, to navigate and to interact socially. Their vocalizations ____41____ between species and within communities. The animals can mimic (模仿) artificial noise such as sonar, but nobody had previously recorded them ____42____ other cetaceans’ sounds. A new study, however, found overlap in the cetacean sound book.

Researchers listened to 2,028 vocalizations of long-finned pilot whales off the coast of Australia, the first time sounds from the species in this region have been ____43____ described. They were surprised to hear 19 instances of vocalizations that resembled those of orcasthe whales’ oceanic ____44____. “We found some calls that are, to the human ear, ____45____ to the killer whale calls in the same area,” says Christine Erbe, an expert in Marine Science and Technology.

Pilot whales and orcas, the two largest species of cetaceans, are often seen in the same ____46____ and are similar sizes, and both live in social groups. Orcas compete for food with long-finned pilot whales and are ____47____ their predators (猎食者) .

____48____ from orca stomachs shows they do occasionally eat pilot whales. But pilot whales can mob and chase orcas away, the only cetaceans seen ____49____ themselves from their predator in this way.

Mimicry could serve as an _____50_____ defense: “One theory is that if they use similar sounds, they may not be recognized as prey,” Erbe says. Pilot whales hunting or eating orcas’ food remainders might go _____51_____ if they use orca-like calls. “This is all underwater, where light travels really poorly,” she adds. “So these animals _____52_____ sound for detecting their prey and predators and for navigating.” Long-finned pilot whales have shown an ability to _____53_____ between orca calls with different meanings.

Additional work would _____54_____ whether mimicry is actually occurring. Researchers could pair their listening data with direct observations of the animals’ interactions in the wild or perhaps even play orca sounds and watch the whales’ _____55_____.

    Section B

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

    (A)

I was 12 years old when my life changed forever. It was just before the end of the school day, and my teacher told me that my mum had asked me to go home immediately. There was a police car in the driveway, and I heard the sound of my sister crying in the living room. My mum took me upstairs and told me that my dad had died. I remember crying like forever.

Then my uncle sat me down and told me what had happened. I remember thinking Dad must have been in an accident in his car — he had a sporty red one, and I thought he must have crashed. So it was shocking to learn he had been murdered — especially when I then discovered that he had been trying to help someone. Our cleaner had been going through a difficult break-up with her husband, and had her post delivered to our house so her partner couldn’t seize it. Dad had taken her mail round to her, but her partner saw him, stole a knife, went to the house and stabbed my dad through the heart, which killed him instantly.

It took me a very long time to be able to get to a place where I could remember the happy times with my dad. It’s as if your brain won’t let you remember, because it’s too painful. Even 30 years on, it can be a challenge. It’s like a coping surviving mechanism and I still work through it today — but that’s life living with sorrow.

During the past few years I’ve found that talking and writing has been a big help. It’s helped me acknowledge what happened, and has made me see these feelings are completely normal. Actually for many years, I used to question why I was still feeling this way, but you come to realize there is no set pattern to sorrow. It’s not a quick-fix process; it’s not even a fixable process. It’s something you have to live with, and you take comfort wherever you can find it.

For someone who has just gone through an unbearable loss, please take it easy on yourself. I’m not sure whether time is a healer, but it will show you how to live with these feelings you’re experiencing. And through your own unique journey, you’ll get to the point of understanding yourself that little bit better.

The world’s forests may hold more secrets than previously thought: a new global estimate of tree biodiversity suggests that there are about 9,200 tree species yet to be documented. Most are likely in the tropics, according to the new research.

The new research drew on the efforts of hundreds of contributors who have categorized trees in two huge data sets: One, the Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative, records every species found in extensively documented forest plots worldwide. The other, TREECHANGE, puts together sightings of individual species. Together they suggest there are approximately 64,100 recorded tree species on the planet—up from previous estimates of around 60,000.

The researchers reached their estimate of an additional 9,200 yet undocumented species on the basis of the number of rare ones already in the databases. Most unknown species are likely to be defined as rare, found in limited numbers in small geographical areas, says the quantitative forest ecologist Jingjing Liang. The team’s result is “a rather conservative estimate,” Liang says, “because scientists know less about the preponderance of uncommon trees in places such as the Amazon, where out-of-the-way spots could host pockets of unusual species found nowhere else.” “If we can focus the resources on those rain forests in the Amazon,” Liang adds, “then we would be able to estimate it with higher confidence.”

Silman, a conservation biologist, who was not involved in the new study agrees that the study result is likely an underestimate. His and his colleagues’ local surveys suggest there are at least 3,000 and possibly more than 6,000 unknown tree species in the Amazon basin alone. Tree species often get grouped together based on appearance, he notes, so new genetic analysis techniques will likely lead to the discovery of even more biodiversity. Sliman wonders how many species will go extinct before scientists describe them. “How many are already known to native peoples in the Amazon — or were known to peoples or cultures who have themselves been made extinct through colonization, disease, or absorption? How many “species” already have dried samples sitting in a cabinet?” he says.

Searching for the new species will inform not only conservation but the basic evolutionary science of how and why species diversify and die out, Silman says. “Just the fact that there are thousands of species of something as common as trees out there that are still left to be discovered,” he adds, “I find pretty inspirational.”

    63. What is the finding of the new research?

    A. Maintaining tree diversity has become a global challenge.

    B. About nine thousand new tree species have been identified.

    C. Thousands of tree species remain unknown to science.

    D. Human activates have led 1o the reduced number of trees.

    64. What can be learned about the research method?

    A. The researchers adopted quality method to analyze data.

    B. The researchers did extensive field study in out-of-the-way spots.

    C. Doing surveys and interviews is the main research method.

    D. Inferring from the existing dada is the main research method.

    A. genetic analysis technique failed to produce accurate information

    B. peoples who had specific knowledge about rare trees became extinct

    C. trees of similar sizes in the Amazon basin are grouped together

    D. too many rare trees were made into dried samples before being documented

    Section C

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    Quiet Power

Since 2011, people around the world have been celebrating World Introvert Day on January 2. The word introvert describes a personality type. ______67______ They are likely to feel drained by environments that are highly stimulating and may often need to go to a quiet place to recharge.

World Introvert Day began with a blog post from German psychologist Felicitas Heyne. She suggested that introverts are often misunderstood, and their mental health suffers because popular culture is dominated by extroverts. Her idea was to celebrate World Introvert Day to raise awareness of the social challenges that introverts face. _____68_____

There are many famous introverts in art and science, such as Albert Einstein. Charles Darwin, J.K. Rowling, and Lady Gaga. It is believed that many introverts have a great ability to focus and strong powers of imagination. After the noisy New Year celebrations are over, people can set aside one day for some quiet time by themselves or with some introverted friends. _____69_____

The opposite of an introvert is called an extrovert. Extroverts love connecting with other people, work well in groups, and are usually very confident. When introverts don’t fit into groups of extroverts, they may be seen as cold, uninterested, or timid. Popular culture tells us that it is important to network, socialize, and communicate, but all of this can make introverts feel uncomfortable.

Scientists are studying what causes someone to be an introvert or an extrovert. Recent studies show that genes are a factor, and most people seem to be born with one personality type or the other. _____70_____ Our environment and experiences also influence whether we are introverted or extroverted. The term ambivert describes someone who is right in the middle. No matter what personality type we have, we can always celebrate our differences and learn from each other.

    A. It would also celebrate the contributions of introverts throughout history.

    B. The brain of an introvert can respond dramatically to a very mild stimulus.

    C. You never know what new ideas you might find when you slow down to enjoy some peace and quiet.

    D. Introverted people are known to live with unique challenges and gift.

    E. Introverted people don't require a lot of social contact and they enjoy spending time alone.

    F. Part of what makes us introverted or extroverted is how our brains respond to the world around us.

    . Summary Writing

    71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Fun Ways to Get a Mental Workout

Your grandfather is sitting in the living room working on a crossword puzzle on a Saturday morning. He thinks these word puzzles are fun, but he also does them for another reason — a mental workout.

The term “mental muscles” describes your brain’s ability to accomplish certain tasks. Like the muscles in your body, your brain’s “muscles” need exercise. While your brain works all the time, the work does not necessarily exercise your brain. In addition, sometimes your brain just needs time to relax and play. It is believed that brain games, like crossword puzzles, make your brain work while playing. They build your concentration by making you focus on certain skills for a long time. For example, when doing a Sudoku puzzle, you focus on organization. Other games that may improve brain power are jigsaw puzzles, mahjong and chess. They can help you to recognize patterns, solve problems and memorize information.

Games build your brain by making you think differently than you normally do. For example, crosswords use clues to help you fill in a grid with words. A crossword clue might be “a fruit with yellow skin.” Your answer must fit in the grid. The word for this clue has six boxes. To fill in those boxes, you need to answer the clue with the word “banana.” Other words in the puzzle share some of the same letters. Because of this, answers to previous clues help you find answers to other clues. Crosswords make you remember the words you know and also help you learn new words. Therefore, filling out crosswords builds vocabulary and memory.

A puzzle that is too hard isn’t any fun. So pick out something that is fun for you, and enjoy building you brain. A game that doesn’t challenge you doesn’t makes your brain work hard enough. So choose a game that will improve a skill yow are working on.
