New England holds some special museums. They are devoted largely or entirely to the work of just one person. And they are the artists’ birthplaces or onetime homes. Here are four examples of such museums.

    Cyrus E. Dallin Art Museum

The name Cyrus E. Dallin (1861-1944) might not be familiar, but several of the artist’s sculptures (雕塑) are, especially those related to Native Americans. A good example is his “Appeal to the Great Spirit” standing in front of the Museum of Fine Arts. Born in Utah, he lived in Arlington for the final four decades of his life. The museum is in the Jefferson Cutter House, an 1830 Greek styled building.

    Norman Rockwell Museum

Rockwell (1894-1978) was America’s well-known artist. The museum, founded in 1969, moved into its present location, Robert A.M. Stern-designed building in 1993. Its 998 paintings and drawings are the largest single collection of Rockwell's artworks.

Kids 16 and under: free; adults: $20; the old: at a 10% discount (折扣)

    Edward Gorey House

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an artist, but he was also an author and clothes designer. Gorey bought this 18th-century house in 1979 and lived there for the rest of his life. Edward Gorey House is also known as the Elephant House. Gorey had respect for animals. The activities of the house, from art education to exhibits, show Gorey's support of animal well-being.

    Gibert Stuart Birthplace and Museum

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) is responsible for what may well be the most familiar work of any American artist, His drawing of George is the basis of the first president’s portrait (画像) on the dollar. Stuart painted more than a thousand portraits throughout his life.

    1. What do we know about Cyrus E. Dallin?

    A. He built the Jefferson Cutter House.

    B. He lived in Arlington for half a century.

    C. He was best known for his Greek styled sculptures.

    D. He created famous works related to Native Americans.

    2. How much will an old couple pay to enter Norman Rockwell Museum?

    A. $36. B. $40. C. $60. D. $72.

    3. Where can visitors learn some history of American money?

    A. Edward Gorey House. B. Norman Rockwell Museum.

    C. Cyrus E. Dallin Art Museum. D. Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum.

    B

On the 25th of December, my mother expected her children to be present, exchanging gifts and eating turkey. But as an artist and daughter, my heart seemed to be more in my work as an artist. As for my mother and my family, I thought we would have more time to spend Christmas together. I was going to do my own thing.

I made plans for my winter adventure in New Hampshire. The MacDowell Colony (麦道尔艺术村) was everything I could have wished for. About 20 to 30 artists were present, and it was as captivating as I had imagined. Snowy New England, sledding (滑雪橇) and whisky! It felt like my life had become an unexpected independent film.

By Christmas Eve, I had been at the colony more than a week. The fresh feelings were wearing off, but I would never admit it. Everyone around me was having too much fun—drinks and deep conversations by the fireplace. It seemed so amazing! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday I’d always dreamed of. No plastic reindeer. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas”, but they said “holiday”. Then why was I so down?

Finally, I called home. My dad answered. He told me that my mother was out shopping with my brothers. I found there was a fire in my heart. They were having a fine Christmas without me? Didn’t they miss me? How could they?

Despite a serious snowstorm, a large package with my mother’s beautiful handwriting showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. I seized it as if I had been five years old. Inside was my favorite cake.

As I sliced () the cake, everyone gathered around —young and old. My mother had sent a real homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our hands, satisfying a hunger we didn’t know we had and reminding us of our dear families, who must be missing us too.

    4. Why was the author unwilling to spend Christmas at home?

    A. She met some trouble at work.

    B. She wanted to focus on her career.

    C. She had disagreements with her mother.

    D. She was tired of staying at a familiar place.

    5. What does the underlined word “captivating” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Attractive. B. Tough. C. Strange. D. Simple.

    6. What can we learn about the artist colony from Paragraph 3?

    A. It attracted many sports lovers.

    B. It was suitable for holiday parties.

    C. It lacked the Christmas atmosphere.

    D. It gave the author some artistic ideas.

    7. What did the author mainly intend to express in the last two paragraphs?

    A. She learned to be open to others.

    B. She enjoyed bringing kindness to strangers.

    C. Her mother was good at taking care of her family.

    D. Her mother’s cake cured the artists of their homesickness.

    C

Pilates (普拉提), yoga and the running machine get all the attention when it comes to popular ways to keep fit. There is, however, a more humble exercise that might not be so attractive, but has all the benefits—walking.

Certified fitness professional Jolynn Jaekel explains, "What I love about walking is that anyone can do it at any age and any fitness level. Plus it is good for your heart, your head and your wallet.”

A recent report detailed the health benefits of walking. The report found that walking regularly to fulfill (执行,履行) the 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical exercise every week, recommended by the UK's chief medical officer, could save 37, 000 lives each year.

Scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that quick walking reduced the risk of heart disease more effectively than running. They observed participants aged between 18 and 80 over a six-year period and found that walking reduced the risk of heart disease by 9.3%, while running reduced it by 4. 5%. And there is even more good news: 30 minutes of quick walking over five days could help you sleep easily, according to research by Oregon State University. The study by the university showed that walking helped participants sleep better and feel more alert during the day.

The sooner you get started, the sooner you'll notice the differences in your mind and body. So, go out for your 30-minute walk in a nearby park or green space.

    8. What does the underlined word "humble" probably mean in the first paragraph?

    A. relaxing B. plain

    C. popular D. active

    9. What does Jolynn Jaekel think of walking?

    A. It's loved by people of all ages.

    B. It's much healthier than running.

    C. It's becoming more and more popular.

    D. It's a money-saving physical exercise.

    10. What did scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory find?

    A. Walking helps people with sleep problems.

    B. Walking contributes to curing heart disease.

    C. Walking is better than running in some cases.

    D. Walking 150 minutes per week can save lives.

    11. In which section of a newspaper can we read this text?

    A. Lifestyle B. Comment

    C. Education D. Science

    D

If electric bikes haven’t caught your attention yet, here’s one that might. Okapi, a Boston-based start-up, is producing a unique e-bike that bridges the gap between motorcycles and ordinary bikes.

These aren’t normal bikes. If the futuristic appearance doesn’t give them away the specs (规格) will: Okapi’s bikes have an all-electric range of up to 40 miles and a top speed of around 30 mph. Those aren’t crazy numbers, but they are more than adequate for an ordinary bike. The company’s selling its bikes for just under $3,000. That’s in line with other e-bikes’ pricing, but Okapi’s bikes look more appealing than the others, which try (with varying degrees of success) to look like normal bicycles.

The bikes’ full suspension, hidden storage, and 1,000-watt motor all add up to a fun ride. Okapi’s design appears to be stronger and more able to handle the bumps (碰撞) than many other electric bikes, some of which appear to be modeled after old models. The main downside to Okapi’s design is that it supports a maximum of 280 pounds, which may stop some riders enjoying the bike.

Okapi’s approach to the e-bike is a little different from others’. While more than one company tries to hide their electric powertrain (动力系统) underneath slim bodywork, Okapi puts it all out for the world to see in a big, square battery pack. There’s almost a futuristic dirt bike look to the bike, which is less awkward than it sounds.

Electric bikes are getting cheaper almost every day, but Okapi’s product charges a high price: The Starter Edition bike costs $2,989.98. The good news is that Okapi’s bike looks better and stronger than many offerings on the market today.

Though they’re not the most mainstream product out there, e-bikes are worth the coin at almost any price. If you’re considering buying an electric bike, do it. E-bikes absolutely offer you an enjoyable and exciting experience, even on the cheaper end.

    12. What do we know about Okapi’s new bike?

    A. Its look is normal. B. Its speed is steady.

    C. It has a lower price. D. It has a limited load.

    13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. The battery pack. B. Slim bodywork.

    C. The electric powertrain. D. Okapi’s approach.

    14. What is the author’s attitude toward e-bikes?

    A. Objective. B. Unclear.

    C. Conservative. D. Supportive.

    15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A. E-bikes: Cooler than You Think

    B. E-bikes: a Future Leader of Bikes

    C. E-bikes: a Better Replacement for Cars

    D. E-bikes: a Mainstream Way of Transportation

It was Mother's Day and I was shopping at a local supermarket with my son who was five years old, Tennyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.

While we were walking towards the scene, Tennyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, “Mom, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, “Why shouldn't we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed.”

By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that time, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you very much.” He then turned to me, “You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.”

The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tennyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, “Happy Mother's Day to you, too.”

    Paragraph 1:

After a moment, the elderly lady was taken into an ambulance,
