(2022秋·江苏扬州·八年级统考期中)People are beginning looking for ways of getting around that didn’t involve crowded (拥挤的) forms of public transportation because of the corona virus pandemic (新冠病毒流行). Biking happens in the open air, and the chance of catching the corona virus while riding is very low, so biking is seen as a safe way to travel.
Biking has also grown more popular because it’s one of the few forms of exercise that has been allowed during many lockdowns. With gyms and fitness centers shut down, biking fills a need for many active people.
Families like biking, too. With schools closed, and kids unable to hang out with their friends, biking is a welcome activity. For many people, that’s the main point—biking is fun.
But bikes are also practical. Experts say that for people in some cities, nearly 60% of their trips can be made by bike. Many cities are seeing this as a chance to make their streets safer and greener. Cities around the world are adding miles of bike lanes to their streets to encourage (鼓励) biking.
New York says it will close off up to 100 miles of roads so they can be used by bikers and walkers. Oakland, California plans to close 74 miles to traffic—that’s almost 10% of the streets in the city.
Paris has set up over 400 miles of new bike lanes (车道). Cars and trucks have been banned from 75 miles of streets in Bogota, Colombia. In Milan Italy, 22 miles of its roads have been converted (转变).
Though many of these bike lanes are only being added for a short time, if changes in biking habits become permanent, they could seriously cut down car traffic and help make cities a lot greener.

(2022秋·江苏盐城·八年级统考期中)Ever wonder why you can go over a book again and again and still be lost when tested on what you read? It may be because you haven’t practiced remembering.
Remembering is a useful way to help us learn. Some of us remember best by listening; others by re-reading; and others learn best by using pictures and diagrams(图表). Schools try many of these different ways to help students “download” new information.
But a recent study from Purdue University, US, says that successful learning means being able to recall information at any moment.
“Our view is that learning is not about studying or getting knowledge ‘in memory’,” said Jeffrey Karpicke, the lead researcher. “Learning is about retrieving(寻回,检索). So it is important to make retrieval practice an important part of the learning process.
The research studied two groups of students. Both groups learned something from a text. One group made diagrams about the text. This method(方法) is called concept mapping. The other group put the text away after learning it and tried recalling the concepts from memory.
Then, both groups were tested on the information they had learned. Both groups scored well at recalling the learned information. However, when they were asked to return one week later, the group who made diagrams scored better than the group who did not use concept mapping. So by drawing concept maps, we are able to recall information far better, which will help us to study.
Our mind, just like our body, has to practice activities to become good at them.
5.Which of the following ways of remembering is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 2?
    A.Listening. B.Re-reading. C.Speaking. D.Using pictures and diagrams.
6.According to Jeffrey Karpicke, learning is about ________.
A.studying knowledge from memory B.getting and recalling knowledge
C.practicing drawing photos and maps D.getting knowledge from memory
7.What does the underlined part “concept mapping” in Paragraph 5 mean in Chinese?
    A.心电图 B.规划图 C.概念图 D.线路图
8.When both groups were tested on the information after one week, ________.
A.they both scored well at recalling information
B.the group using concept mapping scored better
C.one of the groups couldn’t remember the information
D.the group that didn’t use concept mapping scored better
9.What can we tell from the story?
A.Our minds need to practice to remember things.
B.Concept mapping is the only way to learn.
C.How to get knowledge by concept mapping.
D.It’s impossible to remember everything we’ve learned.

(2022秋·江苏南京·八年级校考期中)Success does not belong to a select group of individuals (个人). Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.
Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire, you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.
Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller, if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job, if you’re afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee (保证) success, but if you don’t show up, you won’t succeed.
Fail. Unless you’re willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won’t happen.
To have success, you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula (公式) for success is to double your rate of failure (失败). So welcome failure, become a student of failure, learn from failure, and soon you will succeed.
Work harder. Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day. Success is not about doing what the common person can’t do. It’s about doing what the common person is unwilling to do. And on a deeper level, it’s about creating habits that the common person is unwilling to create. It’s the habit of doing things with excellence that causes success.
Enjoy the journey. Success is a journey, not a destination (终点). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.
Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change, you will change, you will succeed.
10.Which of the following is NOT mentioned (提及) in achieving success?
    A.Good education. B.Working hard. C.Strong desire. D.Enjoying failure.
11.What does the writer really mean by saying “Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day.”?
A.It’s not easy for people to develop their health.
B.Keeping working harder is necessary when you go after success.
C.You are sure to meet with some difficulty in your life.
D.Most people don’t want to spend too much time running.
12.What does the writer mostly want to tell us in the fourth paragraph?
A.Failure is the mother of success. B.Many hands make light work.
C.Every dog has its day. D.Actions speak louder than words.
13.Which of the following is TRUE about success according to the passage?
A.If you want to succeed, you should have special talents.
B.If you want to succeed, you’d better not show up.
C.Success means the enjoyment of your gain or loss on the journey.
D.Success is about doing what the common person can’t do.
14.The best title of the passage might be ________.
A.The Importance of Success B.The Meaning of Success
C.Success or Failure D.The Five Main Steps to Success

(2022秋·江苏苏州·八年级统考期中)Luca Gamberini has been scuba diving (戴水肺潜水) since he was a kid. His family owns a scuba company. For the past three summers, Luca has added gardening to his underwater activities. He helps run Nemo’s Garden, a project to grow plants in the sea.
From May to September, Luca and other divers are working on Nemo’s Garden in the Mediterranean Sea, 150 feet from the coast of Noli, Italy. Five large balloon-like objects, called biospheres (生物圈), hold plants such as beans and strawberries. The biospheres are filled with air and placed 20 feet below the water. “My father came up with the idea because he loves gardening very much,” Luca said.
According to Luca, the sea is a good place to grow plants because underwater temperatures (温度) are stable, changing little from day to night. The biospheres are like greenhouses. Inside the air-filled biospheres, fresh water keeps evaporating (蒸发), providing (提供) the plants with a good environment to grow in. “We have already seen the plants grow faster and better,” Luca says. “And there are fewer storms that can knock down the biospheres in the summertime.”
Luca hopes Nemo’s Garden will provide a new way of growing crops. “There is not enough land on the Earth,” he says. “And in many countries, bad conditions make it difficult for crops to grow.”
Though the project has just started, Nemo’s Garden has had success and is moving to different areas. “We’re going to try growing other plants,” Luca says. “We hope to set up biospheres around the world. There are many possibilities.”

    (2022秋·江苏苏州·八年级统考期中)

Owls are active mainly at night. They hunt when it’s dark. Most of us go for our work and study in the daytime. We almost never see owls, but many of us like these night birds very much. Our love for owls has a long history, and it’s in all cultures. No matter how far you go back, there is always some type of art work or story that includes an owl. These days, we can find owls on company logos, in children’s books, etc. So what makes owls so popular?
Some bird researchers believe owls’ popularity lies largely in their “cool” looks. In order to see clearly in the dark, owls have evolved (进化) to have large eyes. Unlike human eyes, their eyes are cylindrical (圆筒状的). So owls cannot roll (翻转) their eyes. Their heads have to do most of the rolling-around work. It’s also for this reason that owls can turn their heads almost around on their necks.
Owls also use sound to hunt. Their ears are lopsided (不平衡)—the left ear is a little higher than the right ear. A noise goes in one ear before it arrives in the other. This helps owls tell which direction a sound is coming from. To make their sense of hearing even better, the owl’s whole face acts like a satellite dish (圆盘式卫星接收器) for sound waves. Their beaks (鸟喙) are very small so that they won’t get in the way.
Thanks to such unusual looks and abilities, owls became known as strange and wonderful animals. For a long time, people made up lots of myths (神话) about them. Some have described owls as the goddess of wisdom. Some say owls are witches (女巫) in disguise (伪装). These stories have made more people become interested in owls and made them become more popular!

C.their necks are too short D.their eyes are cylindrical

29.The underlined word “them” in the last paragraph refers to (指) ________.

Australian researchers surveyed more than 11,000 people over the age of 25. Their study showed that if people watched TV for six hours a day, they lived about 4.8 years less than those who didn’t watch any television. Also, people who are over the age of 25 lose 22 minutes of life for each hour of TV that they watch.

(2021秋·江苏扬州·八年级校考期中)Do you still remember the great snacks in your childhood? Do they make you think of your happy childhood?
    Dada Bubble Gum(泡泡糖)
Almost all the kids like bubble gum. It’s fun to eat bubble gum. Kids often get together to see who gets the biggest bubble. I still remember my sister once blew a big bubble and then it broke, covering her face with gum! I usually bought Dada Bubble Gum from the small stores near my home. It was cheap. I could get two for one yuan.
    Sugar Figure(糖人)

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责 备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a small notebook. The oil paper umbrella is a traditional (传统的) Chinese handicraft (手工艺品). It has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was brought to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later oil paper umbrellas were brought to some other countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed (钢骨的) umbrellas came out in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. They were turned into handicrafts for decorating things.
Yuhang in Hangzhou is famous for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of paper, bamboo, a coating (涂层) of Tung oil. They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting (粘贴) paper and choosing painting designs. It takes at least a week to make per umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) of China.
A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life.” Liu said. He made the umbrellas better to meet the needs of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1, 000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less.

(2022秋·江苏南京·八年级统考期中)Success does not belong to a select group of individuals(个人). Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.
Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.
Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller, if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job, if you’re afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee(保证) success, but if you don’t show up, you won’t succeed.
Fail. Unless you’re willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won’t happen. To have success you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula(公式)for success is to double your rate of failure (失败).
Success is a journey, not a destination(终点). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.
Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change…you will change, you will succeed.

So in the future you won’t have to remember any numbers when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You’ll just look at the machine and it will be able to tell that it’s you.

Once you find a dream, what do you do with (处理) it? Do you ever try to make your dreams real? Andrew Matthews, an Australian writer, tells us that making your dreams real is life’s biggest challenge (挑战). You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it’s impossible for you to become a writer. Those kinds of ideas stop you from realizing (实现) your dream.
In fact (事实上), everyone can realize his dream. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is. Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want every day and then your dream will come true faster. You should know that a big dream is, in fact, made up of (由……组成) many small dreams.
