    A
Years ago, I was travelling around Australia with two friends. At that time, both friends had to leave early because of work, so I decided to travel to the Whitsunday Islands alone.
I got on a boat. Everyone on the boat, except me, was with friends. Not wanting to talk to strangers, I decided to take photos. The back of the boat was a good place to catch the wonderful view of the sea.
I walked there and saw a metal box standing there. I put my arms on it, without knowing it was a hot barbecue (烧烤架)!
“My God, it hurts!” crying in pain, I moved my arms away at once.
Although there weren’t marks on my arms, I was in great pain. And I didn’t even have friends with me. I sat alone, trying not to cry. Finally my arms turned purple.
People on the boat saw this and came to help me. One girl offered me a special scald cream (烫伤膏).
After treatment, I felt much better. I could enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays, talk to strangers on the boat and have fun with them.
It’s not the conventional (传统的) way to meet people, but it shows even burning your arms can become part of your trip, and make your trip better in the end.

Safiatou Diall’s trip back home to Guinea, West Africa, in 2019, left a lasting influence on her. The now 11-year-old Ohio student remember s seeing children walking without shoes to school, carrying their school supplies (学习用品) in their arms—if they had any at all. Some even carried their books and pens in plastic bags.
Safiatou, who attends Harmon Middle School, knew she had to do something to help. So she set up (成立) the charitable group Greater Purpose Africa, which raises money to buy school supplies for elementary school students in Mamou, a central city in Guinea.
The whole idea was born from a task. Her fourth-grade teacher asked each student to come up with a business plan for class. Safiatou wanted to help children in West Africa. With her dad’s help, she wrote about her wish to start the Greater Purpose Africa group.
But then COVID-19 shut down schools in March 2020, so she wasn’t able to get her charitable group off the ground. When she returned to in-person classes in the fifth grade, she talked to Harmon’s school head, Jared Moore, about her plan, and Greater Purpose Africa took off.
She started collecting school supplies and raising money. Greater Purpose Africa raised $820 and collected 23 backpacks for the first shipment (一批货物) of school supplies, which arrived at Bowoun Djoungol Elementary School in Mamou in June 2021. Safiatou’s grandfather, Elhadji Tidiane Diallo, helped give out the shipment of supplies at the school. The students didn’t know they were going to receive the supplies, so it was a surprise. All 52 students were able to get school supplies, and some even cried tears of joy.
“They were so happy,” Nene Diallo, Safiatou’s mother, said. To show their thanks, the students hung up a banner (横幅) outside their school saying “Thank you/Merci Greater Purpose Africa.”
“I was happy because they were happy,” Safiatou said.
She hopes to raise more money to build a new school. The building can’t even prevent rain and wind, so poor weather can stop classes.
    51. Why did Safiatou Dialo set up Greater Purpose Africa?
    A. To encourage students in her school to be kind.
    B. To raise money for poor students in her school.
    C. To help students learn more about West Africa.
    D. To give school supplies to kids in West Africa.
    52. What made Safiatou Diallo make a decision to start a charitable group?
    A. A postcard from Africa. B. Her school task.
    C. A charity’s support. D. Her father’s advice.
    53. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. She couldn’t explain her idea clearly. B. She failed to start the charitable group.
    C. She didn’t know how to tell her teacher. D. She was turned down by the school head.
    54. How did the students feel after they got the shipment?
    A. Excited and afraid. B. Relaxed and pleased.
    C. Surprised and thankful. D. Concerned and doubtful.
    五、还原句子(共4小题;每小题1.5分,满分6分)

When a friend is going through a difficult time, it’s natural to want to help, but it’s not always easy to know how. Think about situations where you’ve been in need. 55 What did you find the most helpful? The following are ways that you can really help a friend in need.
Only offer help that you are truly able to give. 56 When your friends are unhappy, it’s normal (正常的) to want to make everything all right for them, but think a little about the reality (现实) of what you’re offering before you open your mouth.
57 Offer your help, but if they refuse, then accept that. It may be that they truly don’t want or need your help. That doesn’t mean you needn’t offer help again. It’s simply about respecting what they say about their needs at the time.
Don’t assume (认为) you know what’s best for them. However they are struggling (抗争), your friends need to make their own decisions. When people are going through difficult times, they may feel that what is happening is out of their control. 58
Listen more than you talk. Avoid repeatedly giving your opinion on their situation unless they ask for it. They may want a sympathetic (富有同情心的) ear. It’s best if you can keep your feelings under control. You may feel angry about what your friend is dealing with, but you will be more helpful if you can keep calm as you listen.
    A. Be someone you can trust.
    B. Don’t force your help on them.
    C. Think carefully about what help you can offer.
    D. What did your friends do for you?
    E. Small thoughtful things can be of greater value than you imagine.

Christmas is a holiday known throughout the world. Of course, children especially look forward to it because they can receive gifts. If they’re young, they love to get toys. Older children receive other types of gifts. Even adults exchange gifts. For example, a husband may buy jewellery such as diamond necklace or a ring for his wife. A woman may buy a tie or a leather wallet for her husband. These days computers are popular as gifts. But gifts are just part of Christmas. Most people like to go shopping at that time. People also like to see coloured lights on buildings and trees. Some even buy Christmas trees to put in their homes or offices. It’s a fun time of the year!

Welcome to our school. As a senior student, I have some suggestions for you.
First of all, to study better, being hard-working is necessary. Listen to the teacher carefully in class and finish homework on time. Secondly, don’t forget to pay attention to your health. Eat more healthily and do more exercise. It’s important to keep a good mood and be happy every day. Thirdly, do get along with the people around you. A friend is a person who can make your life easier. There is no doubt that difficulties will be met during your study. When you feel stressed, listening to some music may be helpful. Using different colours is also a good way. As for me, I like to communicate with my parents more and tell my worries to my friends. In a word, there is no success without effort.
I hope my advice is worth taking. Wish you good luck! Thank you!
