    四、阅读理解

Dear students, I taught my first freshman writing class more than 40 years ago. Your class will be my last. We began this term with 36 students. On the first day I thought I would probably end up giving final grades to half that number. If I had been stricter about dropping people, I would have been right. But I let lots of students off. That was no good because now I am forced to give grades that will narrow future options for people who might have gone further, if they had only tried.

If you were one of the students who missed more than five or six classes or who failed to turn in most of the homework, you need to ask yourself if you’re making good use of your time. There are always excuses for not showing up, or not handing in homework. I’ve heard them all. But lives built on excuses generally don’t turn out well.

There were handful of people in this class who made it here every day, always with the given writing task completed. If I were an employer, these are the employees (员工) I would want. But I have never liked to think of myself as working to screen employees for your future bosses. I like to think I’m working for you, and helping build your futures as more fully rounded human beings.

Few people care whether you succeed or fail. You are not showing up to class for your teachers or even your parents. You’ re not doing the homework for anyone but yourselves. In that light, some of you have failed this term. You’ve failed yourselves. As a result, some of you learned very little and showed no noticeable improvement in your writing, wasting your time and mine.

I never find it pleasant or productive to guilt-trip (使愧疚) students. But if just one of you reads these words and decides to take your education a bit more seriously, it was worth writing them.

    84. What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?

    A. He began writing for freshman 40 years ago.

    B. He gave final grades to about 18 students.

    C. He regrets not being stricter with students.

    D. He is forced to give up teaching writing.

    85. What is probably the main problem of students?

    A. Not being polite to teachers.

    B. Making excuses to classmates.

    C. Not making good use of their time.

    D. Being late for school or avoiding work.

    86. What does the underlined word “screen” mean?

    A. show B. choose

    C. fire D. employ

    87. Why did the teacher write the letter?

    A. To remind his students to study harder.

    B. To apologize to his students.

    C. To saying goodbye to his work.

    D. To challenge his students.

    五、七选五

    Develop Positive Relationships

One of the most profound experiences we can have in our lives is the connection we have with other human beings. Positive and supportive relationships will help us to feel healthier, happier, and more satisfied with our lives.     88

    ●Accept and celebrate differences.

89     Yet when we try to build relationships, we expect that people will think like we do. In this way, it is so much easier to create a friendly relationship. However, while we may find it initially easier, the novelty of sameness soon would wear off. So accepting that we are all different is a great starting point.

    ●Listen effectively.

Listening is a crucial skill in boosting another person’s self-esteem.    90    In active listening, we also are genuinely interested in understanding what the other person is thinking, feeling, wanting, or what the message means, and we are active in checking out our understanding before we respond with our own new message. This process is what distinguishes active listening and makes it effective.

        91

In a world where time is of the essence, we don’t always have the time to give to our loved ones. Being present in the time you give to people is important. In other words, when you are with someone, you are truly with someone and not living in the past or worrying about the future. Devoting time, energy, and effort to building relationships is one of the most valuable life skills.

    ●Manage mobile technology.

By now, everyone has a mobile phone and many people have two or more. While they are a lifesaver in an emergency, and an effective tool for communication, they also can be a complete distraction when people exhibit a lack of mobile phone etiquette (礼仪).    92

    A. Give people your time.

    B. Develop your communication skills.

    C. We can perceive the world variously.

    D. Active listening is the most useful listening skill.

    E. So here are some tips to help you develop more positive relationships.

    F. Pay attention to who you are with and answer the phone when necessary.

    G. So technology has somewhat weakened our ability to build a good relationship.

    六、语法填空

As a teacher, I try to know    93   each student is thinking by watching their body language. Recognizing whether students are   94   (interest) in a lesson is easy. Most students tend to look up and make eye contact and sometimes they lean forward and look at me. If a student looks    95   at his watch, it implies he is bored. If two friends are leaning their heads together, they are  96   (probable) writing notes to each other.

Some students are easy to be  97   (distract). Instead of looking at me, they spend all their time looking anywhere. Then again, some students prefer daydreaming.   98  their chins on their hands, they occupy    99   (they) by staring out of the window or up at the ceiling. In these cases, they should be reminded to concentrate.

Distinguishing when students are troubled is much   100   (hard). If students have their arms crossed in front of their chests and their legs    101    (close) or crossed, it shows they are angry, afraid, or experiencing anxiety.

Finally, it is my duty to help every student to learn. I adjust class   102   (activity) according to students’ body language. In my opinion, reacting to body language is an important component of being a teacher.

    七、读后续写

    103. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

On Saturday, Mum went to visit her friends in the city. Ollie, Dad and I went to do the shopping. The car park at the supermarket was very full; there was even a line for the barbecue out the front. Ollie and I complained-we guessed it would be really busy inside. This was not our idea of a fun way to spend the weekend. Dad promised us a hot dog on the way back if we helped him.

Seeing it was packed like sardines in a tin, Dad shook his head at the crowds when we got inside.

The whole town must have picked that morning to do their shopping. Every checkout was full of trolleys. Traffic jams were everywhere, and you could see the supermarket staff busy, running around. Bells sounded. Babies cried. People shouted. This was going to be hard work.

Dad told us we would need to do this smartly if we wanted to get out alive. We needed to work together. Ollie pushed the trolley; I checked the list; Dad would do the running and grabbing. He nodded at us and I knew the battle had started.

Ollie ran off ahead with the noisy trolley and headed for the fruit and vegetables. I chased after him with the list. After crazy panic buying, we were at the checkout, remarking how delicious this food would be when cooked into a roast dinner.

So far, so good. We might have been stuck behind a family with a cart filled to the top, a man with a lot of frozen dinners, and an old couple who moved slowly, but at least we'd made it. Dad picked up a magazine to read while waiting.

We finally got to the front. Dad stood in line, and we went to buy our hot dogs. Satisfied, we went home. But it was when we got the shopping bags into the house that I noticed that something was wrong: one of the bags was not ours. It would be impossible to go back to find our original bag.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.续写部分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    Paragraph 1:

Disappointed but curious, Ollie and I opened the mistaken bag.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2:

It struck us that we could still take advantage of the mistaken bag.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
