Cathy Brennan calmly paddled her bright yellow kayak(皮艇)down the Potomac Rivercontinuing her voyage, the latest of her solo trips on major waterways. It was tough, but it allowed Brennan to let go of everything else, empty her brain of the everyday chores and focus on the now. “I'm in the moment, looking at the waves.” said Brennan.

The journey is a minimalist style: sleeping bag, small tent, rain jacket, change of clothes, first aid kit, apples and cheese sticks. When she's thirsty, she scoops water from the rivers and pumps it through a filter. “I always drink the river,” she says. Brennan loves being on the rivers, seeing the bald eagles above, deer on the banks and a fascinating array of bugs and insects that never find their way into homes.

However, every few days Brennan will find a hotel for the night where she can get a shower and eat a cheeseburger. She'll also check in with her husband John, who has helped her select the river and research the trips at their home. “He's my virtual Sherpa with benefits," Brennan says, laughing. She has a phone with her but rarely calls or texts anyone. Her children usually keep track of her via the transponder that sends them her location every 10 minutes or so.

Brennan knows that solo kayaking is not for everyone and she's not reckless. Brennan grew up on a lake and was a strong swimmer and boater from an early age. When going through rough rapids, she watches the weather carefully. She is cautious about where she camps and who is around her. She has packed up her gear and headed back out on the river when she has felt unsafe.

Surely, she is alone on these journeys but she isn't lonely. She suggested that we all need some disconnection from the wired world to find the wider world around us.

24.What can be learned about Cathy Brennan from paragraph 1?

    A.She longs for calmness.

    C.She is fond of travelling.

    B.She seeks inner peace.

D.She is tired of everyday housework.

    25. Why does Brennan regard her husband as “virtual Sherpa with benefits”?

A.Because he keeps track of her.

B.Because he arranges the route for her.

C.Because he accompanies her on the river.

    D. Because he contacts her with calls and texts.

26.What does the underlined word “reckless” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Cautious.

    B.Fearless.

    C.Ambitious.

    D.Thoughtless.

27.How is Brennan's kayak trip according to the passage?

    A.Odd and instructive.

    C.Costly and relaxing.

    B.Romantic and thrilling.

    D.Tough and rewarding.

    C

In the US only about 3% of early childhood teachers are male. Experts say this may have a great influence on young children whose understanding of gender roles and identity is rapidly forming. Research has found that getting access to different teachers is beneficial for children. This means the youngest learners are more likely to be exposed to a wide variety of games and communication. It can also help them develop healthy ideas about gender.

“In our society and world we tend to have very specific stereotypes(刻板印象)of gender roles”said Mindi Reich-Shapiro, an assistant professor in the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and one of the authors of a recent study. “It's necessary for the kids to see other possibilities and paths they can choose."”

Although they largely felt supported by colleagues and families, many male teachers surveyed stated that in their career as early education teachers they did face social and cultural resistance. Some even noted that the parents were surprised or concerned when they found a male teacher with their kids. Moreover, the male teachers were sometimes advised not to hug children.

Reich-Shapiro and other researchers have made some suggestions to increase the number of male early education teachers. Low wages have long been considered as a major problem in this field. More than 70% of male teachers said they intended to stay in the early education workforce, and pointed out that the major motivator for their commitment to their long-term career was an increased salary. Thus, the report recommended that all preschool educators be paid as much as the primary school teachers. The government should establish support groups and provide guidance and professional advice for male early education educators.

Reich-Shapiro said that traditional recruitment methods for early childhood teachers could not address the gender gap in the field. He proposes providing young individuals with opportunities to stay and work with children either through training or voluntary programs, targeting groups of men who are considering changing their jobs, such as fathers and fathers-to-be.

28.How is the early childhood education in the US?

    A.It lacks male teachers.

    C. It influences kids’ understanding.

    B.It neglects gender roles.

    D. It exposes kids to adventures.

29.What is learned about the male teachers in the study?

A.They find it awkward to hug children.

    B. They fail to meet the parents’ expectations.

    C. They can't keep up with female colleagues.

D.They feel prejudiced socially and culturally.

30.What is essential for men to be committed to early childhood education?

    A.Social recognition.

    B.Job security.

    C.Higher pay.

    D.Better workplace.

31.What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Early education: a specific target

    B. Early education: a challenging field

C.Male preschool teachers: a vital necessity

D.Male preschool teachers: a potential career

    D

According to a study published this weekhabitual napping(打盹) appears to be associated with a large brain volume in adults although experts stressed that further research was needed. It reduces the cost caused from the lost time and the fatigue-related errors. The work followed previous studies that suggested a brief doze could improve people's ability to learn.

Arianna Huffington, a co-founder of HuffPost and the founder and chief executive of Thrive Global, said, “Given the latest science on the effectiveness of napping and the clear link between employees feeling well rested and their productivity, it's long past time that businesses embrace short naps at work.”

Some businesses, including Thrive Global, have already introduced facilities for employees to take naps. Google introduced sleep pods as far back as 2014 and companies like Nike and Ben & Jerry's introduced nap rooms. The practice has even been adopted by the NHS, with a growing number of hospitals introducing sleep pods for staff in an effort to help them get more rest. Employees, it seems, are enthusiastic. Sean Greenwood, of Ben & Jerry$, said, “If a quick nap gets employees more involved and creative, we’re happy to provide that for our team members.”

Unfortunately, the practice of napping still suffers from our collective concept that sleep equals weakness and laziness. However, the performance-enhancing benefits of naps have been no secret to many leaders throughout history. It also gives the higher-ups the chance to acknowledge the 24/7 culture and come up with top-down solutions that encourage workers to take care of themselves in and out of work.

While sleep experts stressed that a daytime doze could be beneficial, they said it was crucial to get enough shut-eye at the end of a day. It is the late stage of sleep, sometimes missed by early risers, that strengthens the nerve circuits that make for learning and memory, allowing the brain to make and consolidate new neutral connections. Additionally, prioritizing sufficient sleep during the regular nightly sleep period is essential for overall well-being.

32.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?

    A.Work stress.

    B.Learning abilities.

    B.Learning abilities.

    C.A research finding.

    D.The brain volume.

    33. What is Arianna Huffington's attitude toward napping?

    A.Dismissive.

    B.Approving.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Critical.

34.Why are so many companies mentioned in the passage?

    A.To advocate enough rest.

    B.To praise creative employees.

    C.To compare the differences.

    D.To present the current situation.

    35. What will possibly be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

    C.The secrets to well-being.

    D.The benefits of memory.

Nowadays, for many people, buying a house or flat is just too expensive. However, the total amount of rent paid by tenants in Britain in 2017 rose to more than £50 billion-more than double the level of ten years prior. Consequently, a lot choose to share the flat. 36

The pros? People rent a room and share the kitchen, living room and bathroom to save money. 37 You may not even need to ask; just leave an IOU. Additionally, there’s the fact that you gain access to their social networks. Living with people means meeting their friends, who may then become your friends.38 Due to the nature of communal living, you're not just dealing with your own life events. Most likely, there will always be a shoulder to cry on when you need one. But don't forget to pay back when they need it.

Now the cons.39  In most cases, the kitchen, for example, will be divided up into designated shelves and areas. Worse, many people may not respect these boundaries. You might well come home to find guests. If a flat mate forgets to keep you informed of a party they're throwing and it can be challenging for you to have a quiet night.

40 Some people prefer their own space while others thrive in a social environment. Regardless, for many who lack the means to buy their own property, a flat-sharing is, and will continue to be, a necessity.

    A.Lastly, there's the emotional support.

B.Those flat-sharing can share the secrets.

    C. To start with, do you lack private space?

D.There's limited storage space, for a start.

E.Whether the pros outweigh the cons depends.

F.Then what are the pros and cons of flat-sharing?

    G. Also, living with others means that you can pool your resources.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business-a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don't have any special skills to share.”

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?”  She grinned,  “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.“  A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
