My only advantage(优点)was     37     —I got an A on every word test I took. After two years of study, I struggled(挣扎)to communicate in     38     German and signed up to study in Germany to complete my degree. It was the     39     term I would ever have.

When I arrived in Germany, I felt like I was starting from the beginning. The German I’d learned in university wasn’t practical for everyday conversation. I was often     40     at school and worried about whether the teachers would call on me in class and whether I’d understand their questions. I only     41     a little around my eight roommates, who tried to speak German slowly to me and didn’t seem to mind my     42    .

I chose to study three courses-reading & writing, grammar and history. All were in German and difficult, but the history class was the worst. The teacher spoke so     43     that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded every single word he said in class, but     44     helped. I had no idea what the class was really about...

Years have passed, but I still remember how it felt to struggle so hard at     45     another language. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as success.

March 2 is Old Stuff(物品) Day. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it. Because what’s better than finding something really great from days gone by?

It’s so easy to forget things you have. And that’s not just the things in your home—in the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.

We’ve learned to value(重视) what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses or charm(魅力). People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.

You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop(旧货店). Another person’s old stuff could be your new stuff! Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity(慈善) shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old things like old clothes into new ones with just a little change.

Today could be a good day to visit your older family. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.

Most of all, remember that today’s new stuff will one day be old stuff.

46What is Old Stuff Day for?

AIt’s to tell people to stop buying. BIt’s to throw away old things.

CIt’s to protect the traditional arts. DIt’s to enjoy and reuse old things.

47What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?

AOld things take too much room at home. BOld things are still valuable and useful.

CWe may forget things that we have easily. DPeople always clean up their houses.

48According to the writer, which is NOT a proper way to deal with old things?

ATurning old things into new ones. BSending them to a charity shop.

CCutting them into small pieces. DGiving them to someone else as gifts.

49The purpose of writing this passage is to make readers ________.

Arealize the value of old things Bfind out the importance of study

Cremember family history Dget on well with neighbors

50Where can we find this passage?

AIn a newspaper. BIn a novel. CIn a history book. DIn a science magazine.

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a sunshade(遮阳伞).

Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the Chinese were the first to use it, back in the 11th century BC

We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing that connected with its use: it was a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in the upper class or by royal people such as kings or queens.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it became a symbol of power.

The umbrella has not changed much in style during all the time, though it has become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

Ca symbol of power Dprotection against the rain

52According to the passage, the umbrella was probably first used in ancient ________.

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st-January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal (正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟) at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sun rise. They welcome the new wear with the first light of the sunrise.

Many cultures also do special things to get rid of (摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start afresh (重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean, or saying special things on the first day of the new year.

Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck at New Year. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them!

    55The reading is mainly about________.

Athe meaning of "Happy New Year!"

    Bseveral different New Year traditions

Cwhat to eat on New Year’s Day

Dwhy people dress up nicely on New Year’s Day

    56It’s clear that________ .

Asome cultures celebrate New Year in the morning

Bthe Western people celebrate New Year only on New Year’s Day

Cpeople in Ecuador go to parties on December 31st-January 1st

Dno cultures do special things to celebrate New Year

57In some cultures, people throw things into rivers or oceans to________.

Abring good luck Bkeep away bad luck

Cforget everything Dplan for the next year

    58To have a happy new year,________ .

Afriends talk to each other in special ways

Bfamilies make big dolls filled with old clothes

Csome people get up early to watch the sunrise

DEuropeans eat 365 grapes on New Year’s Day

59When eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day, people think________.

Aone pea brings one day of luck

Bblack-eyed peas are the best medicine

Cthe peas are too black and taste bad

There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father’s Day Mums have Mother’s Day But do our grandparents have a special festival? Yes, they do!

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.

There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.

Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.

In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.

Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.

But Western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.
