    Charles Richard Drew’s great invention directly contributed to saving thousands of lives during World War Ⅱ, and continues to contribute to the life-saving work of the entire world of medicine later.
    Born in 1904, Drew was the eldest of five children. He was intelligent and showed a talent for studies and sports from a young age. In 1922, his athletic ability earned him an athletic scholarship to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts. Drew graduated from Amherst College in 1926. In 1928 he applied to medical schools and was admitted to MeGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his medical degree and master’s degree in surgery in 1933.
    Upon graduation, as an internship (实习生), he began to look at issues related to blood transfusions.
    When he began his doctoral studies at Columbia University, with a physician named John Scudder, Drew continued his research in the field of blood transfusion. The two have jointly conducted research into blood preservation and fluid replacement, leading to the development of an experimental blood bank, which ran smoothly for seven months.
    Drew’s breakthroughs in blood preservation were timely, as the World War II was raging in Europe at the time. Under Drew’s direction, his team has developed new ways to extract, preserve and transport plasma (血浆) on a large scale.
    Following the success of the “Blood for Britain” program, Drew was appointed the assistant director for the US blood banking system. During this time, he built a number of mobile blood donation stations, later known as blood delivery stations.

    With needle-like teeth and sharp pointed nose, a gray nurse shark isn’t a creature that most people would want to meet. But Shalise Leesfield isn’t one of them.
    The Australian teenager couldn’t think of a better creature to meet when scuba diving off the coast of South West Rocks, near her home in Port Macquarie, a coastal town north of Sydney.
    “Many people say gray nurse sharks look frightening, but I think they are the sweetest animals ever,” she says.
    The slow-moving sharks, which like to stay near the sea floor in warm, shallow waters, are — for the most part — harmless to humans. But the gray nurse shark is under threat. Populations have fallen and habitats have been lost due to ocean warming and human development, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists the species as seriously endangered.
    One area where they can still be seen is Fish Rock, an underwater cavern (洞穴) with a unique ecosystem, 40 miles up the coast from Leesfield’s home. But fishers are allowed access within 200 meters of Fish Rock. This is leading to a drop in the number of gray nurse sharks and increased pollution, says Leesfield. She wants to enlarge the no-fishing area, establishing a protected zone.
    With Leesfield’s efforts, the area has been nominated as a Hope Spot, which is part of the mission Blue program launched by famous oceanographer Sylvia Earle that identifies places as critically important to the ocean’s health and supports protection.
    “When people think about Hope Spots, they think about Sydney Harbour or the Great Barrier Reef. So to get Fish Rock up on that list is just such incredible news,” she says.

    Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) has become quite severe across the United States. But what exactly is cyber-bullying? It’s when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses (侵扰), humiliates (羞辱), mistreats, makes fun of, or threatens another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices.
    According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 59% of U. S. teens have experienced at least one of six identified types of abusive online behaviors. Those behaviors include name-calling (42%), having false rumors spread about them on the internet (32%), receiving explicit images that they didn’t ask for (25%), or being the target of physical threats (16%).
    The peers of some teens have even posted humiliating web pages or videos, or created embarrassing images on social media platforms. Others have taken unauthorized (未授权的) photos or videos in a bedroom, bathroom, or another location considered private, and posted them online for the world to view, rate, share, and discuss.
    There are many reasons to monitor your son or daughter’s online behavior and pay close attention to the warning signs. Among the most worrisome, students who experienced bullying or cyberbullying are significantly more likely to attempt to take their own life.
    “If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying,” says Sameer Hinduja, Ph.     M: A Chinese food cooking class. They teach you how to make some traditional Chinese food. For example, two weeks ago I learned to make dumplings, and last week I learned about how Chinese noodles are cooked. And this week, we’ll learn to make rice cake.
    W: That sounds very interesting. So is the course expensive?
    M: Not really.

    M: Yes, you’re right, Carol. If everyone recycled more, we’d reduce a lot of waste. I mean, look at the amount of paper we waste in this office. It’s crazy. W: Exactly, Alex. And coffee cups, too.
    M: Yes, right. If we recycled our paper and the paper cups, we’d save a lot of waste.
    W: That’s right. And don’t forget plastic. Nobody recycles their plastic water bottles. Let’s do something.
    M: Well, I would take the plastic bottles to the recycling center. And I’ll make a collection box which people can put their water bottles in.
    W: I’ll make two collection boxes for paper and cans. If we put them in the kitchen, people will see them. We’d save a lot of waste. We’re going to make a difference.

    W: She didn’t love reading in the past, but now she has fallen in love with that.

    M: So how did you help her do that?
    W: First, I put down my iPad and my smartphone and began to read myself. I often read in front of her. When she saw me read, she became curious and wanted to do that, too.
    M: So what else did you do?
    W: I also encouraged her to read to me. Also, I chose books carefully so she wouldn’t find them boring.
    M: So how did you get the books?
    W: Buying a lot of books can be very costly. Luckily, we live near a library. There are many books for children.

This autumn, Penn State University and Tyler Arboretum invite you to share your own thoughts about nature in our Nature Narratives Writing Contest. Submit your writing to have the chance to be published in the Short Story Dispenser on the Penn State Brandywine campus. This contest is open to all Penn State Brandywine students, teachers, and graduates, as well as members of Tyler Arboretum, and visitors to Tyler. We want to especially encourage new writers to express their thoughts on our environment. Community members under the age of 18 are also invited to submit your writing to the contest in our youth category. If you are a friend of Penn State or Tyler Arboretum, then we welcome your writing, too! The Nature Narratives Writing Contest is open to all kinds of writing. Think about your own experiences in the outdoors and the connections between society and our planet. Be inspired and create stories of what you see and what the possibilities could be in the present and in the future. The pieces must be original writing and not have been previously published elsewhere.
