Some people don’t like winter because it is long and cold. Bears don’t like winter, either. Do you want to know how bears spend the long cold winter? Let me tell you. They hibernate (冬眠) for the whole winter.
They begin to get ready to hibernate long before winter arrives. Autumn is a season of harvest. Bears can get their food easily in autumn. Bears eat a lot of their favourite food like berries (浆果) and build up their body fat for the winter ahead. During the autumn months, bears may gain (获得) thirty to forty pounds every week!
Except for food, bears must find a place to hibernate. They need a place that can protect them from the cold weather and from other animals. They build their dens (兽穴) in different places, including caves (洞穴) and hollow (空心的) trees. Then they usually put some sticks and leaves inside their dens. They use the sticks and leaves for insulation (隔音材料) because they need a quiet place to sleep in. How wise the bears are!
A bear’s den is small. Some have an entrance just large enough for the bear to go through. The room inside is small, too. It’s just big enough for a bear to sleep in. Or maybe it’s big enough for a mother bear and her small babies.
( ) 34. Why do bears eat a lot of their favourite food?
    A. Because the food is delicious.
    B. Because they want to stay healthy.
    C. Because they want to get fat.

One day some friends came to me and said, “We’re going to Africa to do business. Why don’t you come with us? We’ll all be rich after this journey!”
How stupid I was! I had an easy, comfortable life in Brazil, but, of course, I agreed. And so, in 1659, I went to sea again.
At first, all went well, but then there was a terrible storm. For twelve days the wind and the rain didn’t stop. We lost three men in the sea, and soon the ship had holes in its sides. “We’re all going to die this time,” I said to myself. Then one morning one of the sailors saw land, but the next minute our ship hit some reefs just under the sea. The ship could not move and we were really in danger now. The sea was trying to break the ship into pieces, and we had very little time. Quickly, we put a boat into the sea and got off the ship. But the sea was very rough and our little boat could not live for long in that wild water.
Half an hour later the angry sea turned our boat over and we were all in the water. I looked round for my friends, but I could see nobody. I was alone.
That day I was lucky, and the sea carried me to the shore. I could not see the land, only mountains of water all around me. Then, suddenly, I felt the ground under my feet. Another mountain of water came and pushed me up the beach, and I fell on the wet sand.
At first I was very thankful to be alive. Slowly, I got to my feet and went higher up the shore. From there, I looked out to sea. I could see our ship, but it was wrecked(被毁掉) and there was nobody near it.
There was nobody in the water. All my friends were dead. I was alive, but in a strange wild country, with no food, no water, and no gun.
It was dark now and I was tired. I was afraid to sleep on the shore. Perhaps there were wild animals there. So I went up into a tree and I stayed there all night.
( ) 38. Where was Robinson before he fell into the sea?

    a. The ship was wrecked in the sea.
    b. The ship had some holes in its sides.
    c. Robinson and the other people left the ship.
    d. The ship hit some reefs just under the sea.
    A. d-c-b-a B. b-d-c-a
    C. b-c-a-d D. d-a-c-b

Have you ever watched a show about the wild? A shark (鲨鱼) eats a seal! Lions run down a gazelle! Is all nature like that? All about eating and blood? Or is that just what keeps our eyes glued to the TV screen? Let’s look at some living things who work with each other instead of ripping each other apart.
When a lion kills a gazelle, it wants to eat as much as it can and maybe share the rest with its family. There are some living things that will take small pieces of another living thing’s body. Parasitism is when one living thing gets its energy from another living thing, does not give anything back, and hurts the thing it’s taking things from.
Now let’s get a little nicer. Sometimes a living thing will live off the body of another living thing without hurting it. They do not steal anything. They do not bite. Commensalism is when two living things live together and one gets good things out of it while the other is not hurt by it. Have you seen a picture of a whale (鲸) with rocky white things stuck to its skin? Those are barnacles (藤壶). They attach themselves to the whale, so nothing will try to eat them and they can eat things that float by.
Now let’s get really nice. While sharks are biting and lions are fighting, are there any animals that just get along? Yes! Actually, there are many. Mutualism is when two living things work together and both get good things out of it. Bees and flowers are the most common example. Without flowers, bees could not make honey. Without bees, flowers could not make new seeds. It’s a win-win situation for these two. There are lots of animals that get along. Birds will live on the backs of zebras and eat the ticks that are drinking the zebra’s blood. The bird gets food. The zebra gets its ticks taken away. In some of these cases, one animal could not live without the other.
We use the word “symbiotic (共生的)” for all of these kinds of relationships. Sometimes it’s good for one and bad for the other. Sometimes it’s just good for one. Sometimes it’s even good for both. So, it is nice to know that there are some living things out there that are finding ways to live together. We could pay attention to the animals that do not always make it on TV.
( ) 42. The writer mentioned a TV show about the wild in Paragraph 1 to _______.

    A. By showing pictures.
    B. By giving examples.
    C. By presenting reasons.

( ) 45. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The world of living things remains to be explored.
    B. More actions should be taken to protect living things.
    C. TV programmes about living things require to be improved.
    D. More money will be spent on documentaries about living things.
