This year is the Year of the Tiger. Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What’re they like? Are they brave, strong and tenacious (顽强的)? If so, they are typical “tigers”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered as the king of all animals. They are the symbol of power, energy, protection, generosity (慷慨). Tigers are regarded as fearless animals, so that’s why in China people often paint pictures of tigers on the walls of houses to protect themselves from danger.
▲ As tigers mostly live in Asia, they have become a cultural symbol of Eastern countries for people in the West. For example, in the book Life of Pi, Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a Bengal tiger as the partner for the Indian boy Pi on his adventure (冒险) in the Pacific Ocean.
In the West, tigers are also seen as very powerful animals. In English, if you want someone to calm down you can say to him, “Easy, tiger.” Another famous phrase is the “eye of the tiger”. People who have the “eye of the tiger” are usually confident and fierce (凶猛的).
Tigers are also one of my favorite animals. I first learned about the beauty of tigers as a child while watching animal documentaries. And my favorite toy while growing up was my toy tiger. As a young animal lover, I feel so sad that they are in danger of dying out and I want to help protect them.
    41. Chinese people think pictures of tigers on the wall can make them ________.

    D. Instead of tigers, lions are considered as the king of all animals in the West.
    43. Why does the writer mention the phrase “eye of the tiger?”
    A. To show western people also consider tigers as powerful animals.
    B. To explain how we can use the word “tiger” when writing.
    C. To describe the eyes of tigers in detail.
    D. To express his love of tigers.
    44. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. The story of Pi and the Bengal tiger happens in the Pacific Ocean.
    B. The writer thinks tigers are beautiful.
    C. Western people don’t like tigers.
    D. The writer is worried about tigers.
    D
Excellent people must have both talent and virtue (德行). If a person has virtue but no talent, he or she might work inefficiently (低效地). If a person has talent but no virtue, he or she might go in the wrong direction. Those who have both talent and virtue were called xiancai in ancient times. There is a story about them in the book Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government by Chinese historian Sima Guang.
Zhi Xuanzi was the head of Zhi, a big family of Jin during the late Spring and Autumn Period. He wanted to make one of his sons, Zhi Yao, to be the head of the family, who was considered the most excellent man in the family.
However, a wise man in the family, named Zhi Guo, was against the idea. When he heard the news, he went to Zhi Xuanzi’s house and said to him, “Zhi Yao is good at many things. For example, he is a good rider and shooter. He is decisive (果断的) and talkative. But he has a big weakness—he doesn’t have a kind heart. Without it, he may envy other people’s talent and do horrible things. Our family will be in danger.”
Zhi Xuanzi didn’t change his mind and finally Zhi Yao became the head of the family. With his leadership abilities, he quickly made the Zhi family the strongest in Jin. However, because of his aggressive style, three other families worked together to fight against the Zhi family. Finally, the Zhi family was beaten.
Sima Guang used this story to show how important virtue is. Talent is important, but if you ask which one is more important between talent and virtue, the story of Zhi family has given you the answer.
In 2018, when President Xi talked with students and teachers at Peking University, he mentioned Sima Cuang’s idea.
He said good education should develop both a person’s virtue and talent. Educators must follow this idea. As students, we can also make it our goal.
    45. The passage is probably a(n) ________.
    A. story B. notice C. novel D. opera
    46. Put the things happened to the Zhi family in the correct order.
    a. Zhi Yao became the head of the Zhi family.
    b. The Zhi family was beaten by other three families.
    c. Zhi Xuanzi wanted Zhi Yao to take the place of him.
    d. Zhi Guo didn’t agree that Zhi Yao could be the head of Zhi.
    A. b-a-d-c B. d-c-a-b C. c-d-a-b D. b-d-a-c

Health problems which are related to climate (气候) change are getting worse, say two recent reports.
The reports followed 44 health problems that are related to climate change around the world. They include heat deaths, infectious diseases (传染病) and hunger. “All of them are getting worse,” said Marina Romanello. She is a research director of the Lancet Countdown project. “With global warming getting worse, doing nothing on climate and health will cost more than acting now,” one of the report says.
The reports are called “code red for a healthy future”. One report is centered on the US and the other is centered on the whole world. The reports found some dangerous facts. At-risk populations like older people and the very young are more easily influenced by high temperatures. For people over 65, the researchers found they stayed longer in great heat than the average (平均的) from 1986 to 2005. Also, there are more people living in warm places where it is easier for some diseases to spread. For example, coast areas are warm enough for dangerous bacteria (细菌) to grow. In some poor nations the season for disease-spreading mosquitoes (蚊子) has got longer since the 1950s.
The research also found that 72 percent of countries saw an increase in wildfires. And in 2020, up to 19 percent of the world’s land surface was influenced by extreme drought (极端干旱). In the US, the heat, fire and drought caused the biggest problems. The Pacific Northwest and Canada saw extreme heatwaves last summer. An earlier study found that the heatwaves would not have happened if there were no human-caused climate change.
    49. What did the reports find according to Paragraph 3?
    A. At-risk populations are more easily influenced by high temperatures.
    B. Climate change doesn’t influence people who are under 65.
    C. It’s easier for some diseases to spread in warm places.
    D. In poor nations, the season for mosquitoes becomes longer.
    50. What does the underlined word “related”in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. connected B. spread C. influenced D. considered
    51. What’s the passage mainly about?
    A. The results of climate change.
    B. The reasons why climate changes.
    C. Health problems related to climate change.
    D. Deaths caused by human-caused climate change.
    52. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
    A B. C. D.
