But Brewster comes to understand it doesn’t matter how many views your video gets. What matters is the people you team up with to make those videos. A Million Views focuses on the joy of life beyond the Internet.—By Mason Langer

This book, by Newbery Medalist Katherine Applegate, is written in free verse (诗). It’s based on a true story from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, in California. David Grant and Yvonne Faulkner-Grant of Warwickshire. England always let their 13-year-old dog, Scruff, pick up the plastic bottles he finds while out on their daily walks. The dog carries the bottle for a while, and they kick it or throw it for him to chase. The game is over when Scruff loses interest and drops it.
Throughout 2021, David and Yvonne observed Scruff’s habit of finding even the most well-hidden bottles. They also noticed a marked increase in the amount of litter in their rural area. David says they were both taught never to drop their trash as children, so they couldn’t believe that people were littering so much. At the start of 2022, David and Yvonne decided to start picking up the bottles to bring home with them. It was the large number of litter that made them decide to train Scruff to gather other people’s trash.
Since starting this journey, Scruff has become a local celebrity in his neighborhood. David and Yvonne never let Scruff pick up anything dangerous, like glass. They also remain appalled by the amount of litter they’ re seeing, and hope that people will hear Scruff’s story and either stop dropping trash or, perhaps, try picking it up themselves. Plus, Yvonne thinks Scruff took to his duties so well, other dogs could easily be trained to do what he does as well.
In the end, Scruff was able to gather up 1,334 bottles-along with three cups, a Pringles tub, and a baby feeding bottle. “If we walk the same route every day, he will find bottles on that route every single day,” said David. “We feel a bit of pride that we are picking them up, but a bit of anger that they’re even there,” Yvonne said.
4、In which situation will the game be over?
    A. Scruff gathers 100 bottles. B. Scruff throws the bottle into the bin.
    C. Scruff drops the plastic bottle. D. David Grant sells the bottle for money.
5、What were David and Yvonne taught from their childhood?
    A. Don’t drop litter everywhere. B. Animals are our friends.
    C. The best fish swim near the bottom. D. Every dog has his day.
6、Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “appalled”?
    A. Independent. B. Displeased. C. Intelligent. D. Disabled.
7、How do David and Yvonne feel about the result?
    A. Excited and proud. B. Angry and disappointed
    C. Proud and happy. D. Proud but angry.
Last Monday, I visited Jalan Besar to find a new fan blade for a standing fan that my daughters had broken.
I’d worked in the Jalan Besar area 30 years ago and remembered that there were lots of small hardware shops selling unusual things so I thought that I would have no problem finding a fan blade. However, after walking around for almost an hour, I found out that these shops were no longer around.
When I was ready to give up and go home, I spotted an old-fashioned hardware store. After being greeted by a woman, I explained my predicament. She immediately asked me to show her the broken blade. Out of nowhere, a man who looked to be in his 60s came out.
He asked to see the blade and then disappeared into the shop. He came back with a blade but it did not look the same as what I had in my hand. We compared the two blades and he said that it might work.
I asked him how much it was. He told me that he had taken the blade off an old fan that someone had brought in for repair. He said: “It didn’t cost me anything, so why should I charge you for it?” That really touched me. I took the blade home and it work perfectly! My daughters got a “new” fan for nothing.
When I told them this story, they were shocked as they are used to patronizing big modern shops where everything is transactional and the employees go strictly by the book. Not so much my wife. She is almost in her 60s, and said this reminded her of the kind aunties and uncles who used to run small shops and were always ready to help others when she was growing up.
8、Why did the author go to Jalan Besar?
    A. To visit old friends. B. To fix the broken fan.
    C. To apply for a job. D. To buy a new fan.
9、What does the underlined word “predicament” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Nervous mood. B. Anxious waiting.
    C. Difficult situation. D. Embarrassing moments.
10、Which of the following can best describe the old man?
    A. Honest and helpful. B. Kind and brave.
    C. Determined and curious. D. Open-minded and humorous.
11、How did the author’s wife react to his experience?
    A. She thought little of it. B. She was greatly surprised.
    C. She couldn’t believe it. D. She remembered the old days.
For most of us, walking is something we do automatically. It doesn’t require much effort, so many of us fail to remember the benefits of walking for health.
Physical activity doesn’t need to be hard. Whether you’re regularly active or not, even a quick ten-minute daily walk can deliver a host of health benefits. But what happens if we stop walking ahead and start challenging our brains and bodies by walking backwards? Not only does this change of direction demand more of our attention, but it may also bring additional health benefits.
One of the most well-studied benefits of walking backwards is improving stability and balance. Walking backwards can improve how a person walks and balance for healthy adults and those with knee problems. Walking backwards causes us to take shorter, more frequent steps, leading to improve the muscles of the lower legs. But the benefits of changing direction aren’t just that—an interest in backwards movement has led researchers to discover various other benefits. While normal walking can help us maintain a healthy weight, walking backwards may be even more effective. Energy expenditure when walking backwards is almost 40 percent higher than walking at the same speed forwards, with one study showing reductions in body fat for women who completed a six-week backwards walk.
Walking backwards is simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. So, how can you add walking backwards into your exercise plan? When walking backwards, we’re more likely to crash into something or fall over, so in the interest of safety, it’s best to start indoors where you won’t crash into someone or outside in a flat, open area. Look over your shoulder. Keep your head and chest upright while reaching back with your big toe for each step, rolling through the foot from toe to heel. Once you become more confident walking backwards, you can begin to speed things up.
12、Why does the author mention “the benefits of walking” in the beginning?
    A. To introduce the benefits of walking. B. To show people’s lack of exercise.
    C. To lead us to “walking backwards”. D. To tell us the importance of walking.
13、What does the underlined word “expenditure” mean?
    A. Increase. B. Consumption. C. Experiment. D. Construction.
14、What does the fourth paragraph talk about?
    A. When is safe to walk backwards?
    B. Why should we walk backwards?
    C. How can we start walking backwards?
    D. What’s the weakness of walking backwards?
15、What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Physical Activity Is Easy And Simple.
    B. Walking Backwards Is Really Good For You.
    C. Walking Doesn’t Require Any Special Equipment.
    D. Walking Ahead Challenges Our Brains and Bodies.

    48、阅读下面材料,根据其内容及所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Christmas was approaching, and I had no idea what to get for my wife. We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending an important meeting, so I had the rest of the week to figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house partner while Donna was away was her cat, Princess, who was everything that her name implied. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors. Princess had other ideas, and slipped out of the house as I was bringing in some food. By the time I had turned around and gone back out of the door to look for her, she was gone.
Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess as soon as possible. So, I made up a poster of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. Perhaps because my poster were not so clear, soon people in the area came to my house with several homeless cats. Though Princess wasn’t among them, I let them stay in our yard. I figured Donna would understand.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. Finally, the day came for my wife to return.

    1.续写词数应 100 左右;

I picked her up at the airport and decided to tell her what had happened. I explained to her about Princess and how I had been searching for her every day. Donna was understanding and supportive, but she couldn't help feeling sad about Princess. We spent the next few days trying to find Princess. We put up posters around the neighborhood and asked our neighbors if they had seen her. But there was no sign of her. At the same time, I told her about the homeless cats in our yard.
    Paragraph 2:
When Donna saw the homeless cats in the yard, her eyes just filled with tears. One day, as we were sitting in the yard, we heard a familiar meowing. We looked around and saw Princess walking towards us. We were overjoyed to see her and couldn't believe that she had found her way back to us. From that day on, Princess never left our side. We were grateful for the experience of taking care of the homeless cats, but we were even more grateful to have our beloved Princess back home with us.
