    Giraffes
IUCN(世界自然保护联盟)has put some giraffes at a critically endangered(淑危的)status. There are only 4,000 Kordofan and Nubian giraffes left. The giraffe population has declined primarily due to loss of habi-tat,social disorder, and poaching(偷猎)according to priority(优先考虑的事).Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in parts of Africa.

All six tiger species are endangered, with Sumatran and South China tigers at a critically endangered status. Some scientists even consider the South China tiger to be “functionally extinct” since it hasn't been seen in the wild in more than 25 years. The main reasons for their population decline are poaching and destroyed habitats, as humans clear forests to gather wood and build roadways. Only about 3 ,890 tigers currently live in
    the wild.
    Asian elephants
The main threat to Asian elephants is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people take their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are al an especially high risk for being caught and traded or used illegally in the tourist industry. It is unknown just how many elephants are left on the entire continent, but experts estimate numbers could be fewer than 50,000. It’s alarming but important to learn about these animals that could go extinct within your lifetime.

The world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago. Recent IN ASA satellite data (2000 〜2017 ) have shown that human activities in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to ambitious tree- planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业)in both countries.
The researchers from Boston University found that global green leaf area has increased by 5 percent in the new century, an area equal to all of the Amazon rainforest. China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6. 6% of global vegetated area. China’s contribution comes in large part from its programs to conserve and expand forests, taking up about 42 percent of the greening. The greening from croplands in China is about 32%,but that in India is about 82%.
Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA' s Ames Research Center and a co-author of the study said, “ When the greening of the Earth was first observed,we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate and fer- lilization (施肥)from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. But with data from NASA satellites, scientists realized that humans are also contributing, which was all against our expectations.
Nemani sees a positive message in the new findings. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it,”he said. “In the 1970s and 80s in India and China, the situation around vegetation loss was not good. In the 1990s, people realized U, and today things have improved. Humans are incredibly resilient. That1 s what we see in the satellite data.
However, the researchers rang bells as well. They said that the gain in global greenness did not netessari- ly compensate for the loss of natural vegetation in regions like Brazil and Indonesia.
    28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. The decreasing size of the Amazon rainforest.

Should university campuses be open to the public?
On holidays, more and more visitors, including middle school students, swarm into some well-known universities like Tsinghua University and Peking University. This trend has sparked a nationwide debate on whether university campuses should be accessible to non-students.
Is it a good or bad thing? Different people have different opinions. Some people argue that it can enable the students to get more information about the university and they can later prepare themselves with the chance to get into the university. However, others hold a negative view. In their opinion, the public tourism will have a negative effect on the universities because it will not only do harm to the environment but also to the intellectual atmosphere.
As for me, universities are mainly for academic research. With the increasing tourism on the campus, it will ruin the spiritual atmosphere in this learning field.

    【听力录音原文】
    Text 1
W: Mr. Lee, whenever I see you, you are wearing a different tie.
M: That's the work of my wife. Whenever she went shopping, she bought a tie for me and a hat for herself.
    W: Sounds interesting!
    Text 2
M: What would you like to have, Susan?
W: Just some sliced tomatoes and a glass of juice.
    M: How about some beef?
W: No, thanks. It's delicious, but I'm on a diet to control my weight.
    Text 3
W: Susan speaks English almost as well as an American.
M: Don't you know she was born there and lived there until she was 12 years old?
    W: Really? No wonder!
    Text 4
    W: What's the matter?
M: It's Tom. I don't know what to do. He just sits and watches TV all evening when he should be studying.
W: Yes. Every time I talk to him about his study he gets angry and shuts himself in his room.
M: We need to have a talk with him when he comes back.
    Text 5
W: I gave one dollar to the children next door. They gave me a hand with my luggage.
M: You mean those living in Apartment 13-B?
W: No, they are in 33-B.
    Text 6
W: Tom, my plane leaves at 3 o'clock this afternoon, so when will it be convenient for me to set off?
M: Let me think. If you leave straight after lunch, you'd better make it 1:30. That would be safe.
    W: Thank you!
M: By the way, remember to call a taxi to the airport.
W: Oh, thanks a lot. I will make the phone call right now.
M: Another thing I want to remind you is about your hotel booking.
W: Oh, yes. I'm sure it's all right, but could you do me the favor to phone them to confirm it?
    M: No problem.
    Text 7
M: Excuse me. If it is possible, I'd like to change a table.
W: Sure, but could you tell me why?
M: What I reserved was a table in the non-smoking area. But you see, after I sit here, I find so many people are smoking.
W: I'm sorry but this is the smoking area. We must have made a terrible mistake. We are very sorry, but now I will go to check if there are any tables available in the non-smoking area.
    M: Great!
W: Sir, there are tables available in the non-smoking area. Do you want to sit by the window or by the aisle?
M: From the window I can see the beautiful view of the Pearl River. I prefer that.
W: Fine. Please take a seat. Now, are you ready to order?
    Text 8
W: Good morning, sir. How can I help you?
M: I'd like to inquire about the flight to Madrid. Are there any flights next Saturday?
W: Let me check it on the computer for you. Here we are. There is a morning flight on China Eastern Airlines. Are you traveling alone, sir?
M: Yes, I am. What time does the flight leave?
W: It leaves at 9:00am. How would you like to fly? Economy, business class or first class?
    M: Business class, please.
    W: Single or return?
    M: Single, please.
    W: What's your name?
    M: Tom Ward.
W: OK, Mr. Ward. I've booked you on China Eastern Airlines, Flight Number 552, which is leaving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on the 6th of October. Please be sure to check in two hours in advance.
    M: Thank you.
    Text 9
W: Good morning. Today we'll talk about theme parks and hear from Andy Wells who has written a guide to theme parks around the world, Welcome to the program, Andy.
M: Hi, it's good to be here.
W: You really have a dream job, don't you? Flying around the world all the time, visiting adventure parks...
M: Yes, it's exciting. But it's really hard work too.
W: I bet. So, what's the world's number one theme park?
M: That all depends. In terms of numbers, it has to be Magic Kingdom in Florida. But the most popular park for people who like adventure rides is Cedar Point in Ohio.
W: In your book, there are many theme parks in Asia too. Can you tell us about them?
M: Sure. First, the Universal Studio in Singapore is very good. There is going to be a dark ride inside a building there. That's fun. In China, more parks will open in the next few years, including a park called Ocean Kingdom. That will have the world's longest roller coaster.
W: OK, thank you for your coming to my studio.
    M: My pleasure.
    Text 10
M: Nowadays in the United States, more and more people are beginning to build underground houses which save open land. When houses are underground, there is more land for parks, playgrounds and gardens. Underground houses also save energy. They use only a little energy to stay warm or cool.
As we know, the idea of underground houses is very old. People in the past lived in underground houses and underground cities in China. And today you can find large underground shopping centers in China, Japan, South Korea and Canada as well. Some countries also build underground factories and shop-houses to hold things.
Joyce Rinker has an underground house in Michigan. One day in February, the outside temperature was a cold -22℃, but the temperature inside his house was a warm 16℃. The next year, in July, the outside temperature was a hot 42℃, but the temperature inside was a comfortable 22℃.
