    A
When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.

    A Narrow Escape
Shortly after the war, my brother and I were invited to spend a few days’ holiday with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He had rented a cottage in the country, although he hardly spent much time there. We understood the reason for this after our arrival: the cottage had no comfortable furniture in it. Many of the windows were broken and the roof leaked (漏水), making the whole house wet.
On our first evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the stories our uncle told of his many adventures in distant countries. I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting stories. He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.

根据第二段中的“I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting stories. 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.
根据最后一段中的“When we got to the top of the stairs and opened the bedroom door, a strange sight met our eyes. A large part of the ceiling had fallen right on to the pillow of my bed.
根据第二段中的“I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting stories. 可知,作者很累但是尽力去听叔叔讲的故事,而下文中的讲述的“He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep. 可知,在作者与哥哥休息的地方,传来巨响,根据尾段中的“A large part of the ceiling had fallen right on to the pillow of my bed.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off , but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership — a shop selling cars — was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you” — two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.
    46. The author planned to stop at Oklahoma City ________.
    A. to visit a friend
    B to see his parents
    C. to pay at the cash register
    D. to have more gas for his car
    47. The words “took off” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean “________”.
    A. turned off B. moved off C. put up D. set up
    48. What happened when the author found smoke coming out of his car?
    A. He had it pulled back to the gas station.
    B. The couple sent him a business card.
    C. The couple offered to help him.
    D. He called his friend for help.
    49. The battery of the author’s car was dead because ________.
    A. something went wrong with the lights
    B. the meeting lasted a whole day
    C. he forgot to turn off the lights
    D. he drove too long a distance
    50. By telling his own experiences, the author tries to show ________.
    A. how to write a thank-you letter
    B. how to deal with car problems
    C. the kind-heartedness of older people
    D. the importance of expressing thanks
A 47. B 48. C 49. C 50. D
根据第一段中的“I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend.(我在距离俄克拉荷马城大约50英里的一个加油站停了下来,我打算在那里停下来拜访一个朋友)”可知,作者在俄克拉荷马城停下是想看看朋友。故选A。
根据上文“I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend.(我在距离俄克拉荷马城大约50英里的一个加油站停了下来,我打算在那里停下来拜访一个朋友)”及划线词“but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.(但刚开了几英里,黑烟就从我的车后面冒了出来)”可知,此处指作者离开加油站继续赶路。
根据第二段中的“A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s.(一辆汽车在我后面停了下来。
根据第四段中的“In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead.(下午晚些时候,我回到车里,发现我一整天都开着灯,电池也没电了)”可知,因为作者忘了关掉车灯而将汽车的电池耗完了,故答案选C。
They’re easy to say and mean so much.(“谢谢”——两个强有力的词。
    D
Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.
However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.
Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
    51. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.
    A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success
    C. the standards of success D. the importance of success
    52. In Paragraph 2,the underlined word that refers to ______.
    A. being good at something B. setting a practical goal
C putting in more time D. succeeding in life
    53. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.
    A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work
    C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed
    54. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
    A. Successful people like to show their great skills.
    B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.
    C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.
    D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.
    55. What is the main theme of the passage?
    A. Having a goal is vital to success.
    B. Being good is different from being great.
    C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.
    D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.
A 52. B 53. D 54. B 55. C

根据第一段“Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.”(有些人认为成功只属于那些有天赋或有良好家庭环境的人,而另一些人则认为成功主要取决于运气。
“However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing.
根据“To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.”(要精通某些事情,甚至需要更多的时间,而大多数人不会投入这些时间。) 以及第三段的“This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. (To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.)
根据第四段“It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” 通过but之后的内容“thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” D项可以根据第四段最后一句的does you no good排除。
通过文章最后一段主题句“Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.
