A California company is using robots to grow plants in greenhouses that use 90 percent less water than traditional farms, which can help prepare for a more sustainable future.

The company, Iron Ox, operates several greenhouses and has plans to expand. It recently announced a new $50 million investment. The financing was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a company established by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

At a 930-square meter center in Gilroy, California, Iron Ox uses a self-driving robot named Grover to transport containers of plants. The large greenhouse uses hydroponics(水栽培), a system designed to grow plants in materials other than soil, such as water. The company says each container, known as a module, carries 30 liters of water and about 70 seedlings as it moves. Another machine uses robotic arms to lift the top of the plants out of the water. This permits the roots to be inspected. Sensors also examine the water, measuring levels of nitrogen and acidity(酸度).

The company notes that in its greenhouses, any water not used can be pumped back into the system to be reused later. Agriculture is an important part of California’s economy. But water usage has increasingly become a concern. The last major drought in 2012-2017 cut water for farmers, forced household usage limits and fueled deadly wildfires.

Iron Ox currently grows Thai basil and strawberries and is working on cilantro, parsley, and tomatoes. The company plans to build a new 50,000-square-meter greenhouse in Lockhart, Texas. There, the robots will be moving about 5,400 modules.

Iron Ox sees the robotic, indoor system expanding in the coming years to become a scalable(可扩展的) model and a really interesting way to bring modern technology in a controlled setting to agriculture.

24.What is the main purpose of Iron Ox?

A.To obtain financial support.                     B.To absorb greenhouse gases.

C.To increase agricultural investment.             D.To develop long-term agriculture.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项

Plastic is a miracle material. Thanks to plastics, countless lives have been saved in the health sector, the growth of clean energy from wind power and solar panels has been greatly improved, and safe food storage has been revolutionized.

But what makes plastic so convenient in our day-to-day lives – it’s cheap – also makes it present everywhere, resulting in one of our planet’s greatest environmental challenges. Our oceans have been used as a rubbish station.36.          . In cities around the world, plastic waste blocks drains(下水道), causing floods. Consumed by livestock(家畜), it also finds its way into the food chain.

Plastic packaging accounts for nearly half of all plastic waste globally, and much of it is thrown away within just a few minutes of its first use. Much plastic may be single-use, but that does not mean it is easily disposable(可随意处理的). 37.          , when thrown in landfills or in the environment.

The good news is that a growing number of governments are taking action. 38.          . Rwanda, a pioneer in banning single-use plastic bags, is now one of the cleanest nations on earth. Kenya has followed suit, helping clear its iconic national parks and save its cows from an unhealthy diet.

Learning from the experience of countries that have introduced bans and regulations on single-use plastics, government should analyze what has worked well, what hasn’t, and why. 39.          .

     40.           – with huge gains for people and the planet that help avoid the costly downstream costs of pollution. In addition, action will drive the kind of innovation that will support the future global economy we need.

Plastic isn’t the problem. It’s what we do with it. And that means the onus(职责) is on us to be far smarter in how we use this miracle material.

    1. Action can be painless and profitable
    2. Plastic can take up to a thousand years to break down
    3. All nations, whether rich or poor, can become global environmental leaders
    4. Plastic is choking marine life and transforming some marine areas into a plastic soup
    5. Plastic in the environment does significant harm to wildlife both on land and in the ocean
    6. Plastic breaks down completely only if exposed to continual high temperatures above 50°C
    7. Policymakers must introduce measures to regulate the production and use of disposable plastics
