This year’s annual classics collection is particularly special, given it is the magazine’s 100th anniversary year. Peeling back the covers of the thousands of editions, published in numerous countries, and dating back to the first issue in February 1922, is always a task we enjoy doing.

One of the reasons I became a teacher was how much I loved the reading and writing process, and how excited I was to help young children develop as readers and writers. I had visions of a class full of busy writers, all with the same sense of excitement I’ve always had about writing and sharing stories.
One day, I discovered the work of Vivian Paley, who developed a storytelling curriculum for young children that involves writing down the contents of students’ drawings and having their classmates act out these stories. I was immediately drawn to Paley’s focus on dramatization(编剧).
One morning, as my students gathered in our classroom for our writing lesson, I told them that they could draw anything they’d like, imaginary or real that day. They discussed with one another what they liked to draw and shared some of these ideas out loud, which helped inspire those who weren’t ready with their own ideas. For the next half-hour or so, I was busy writing down their stories. I observed some of my most hesitant and unwilling students drawing with a sense of focus and purpose.
At the end of the session, we sat in a circle and I explained that we would act out some of their stories. The“playwright(剧作家)”would choose classmates to be the characters in the story, and I would tell the story. Then the first playwright stood up to announce which char- acters she’d need. I watched as one student became a rabbit, another became a fairy, and another became a rain bow cloud. When the play was over, the actors and playwright bowed, and the class clapped for them. The next playwright jumped to her feet, shouting, “My story is next!”

For any astronaut hoping to survive on the surface of the moon, growing crops will be essentia1.Now, scientists have taken “one small step”towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it 's possible to grow thale cress, a small flowering plant,in lunar soil.
The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions,and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. "For future, longer space missions,we may use the moon as a launching platform," explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that 's already there to grow plants."Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil.“So, what happens when you grow plants in lunar soil? What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse? Could we have lunar farmers?” Professor Ferl questioned.
To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients, and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code has already been fully mapped.
For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils,including those that simulate Martian soils. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew.However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more varied in size.
Growing plants in lunar soils may also change the moon itself, according to Dr Stephen Elardo."The moon is a very, very dry place," he said."How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients? Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants?”The researchers hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies.

The United Kingdom is a group of islands off the coast of Europe — but it hasn’t always been that way. Many thousands of years ago, the UK was attached to Europe by a stretch of land known as Doggerland. And the evidence of the people who lived there is regularly found. Roughly 12,000 years ago, as the last major ice age was ending, the area that is now the North Sea was very different. Instead of water, the area had hills, wetlands and valleys full of trees. Stone Age people lived in Doggerland. They were hunter-gatherers who moved with the seasons and lived by fishing, hunting, and gathering food such as nuts and berries. Over time, they were slowly flooded out of their hunting grounds. Water which had been locked away in ice began to melt, drowning Doggerland. Around 6000 years ago, people were forced onto higher ground in what are today’s England and the Netherlands. The evidence of the ancient people’s presence can be found on the sea floor, where modern fishermen often find bones and tools that date back to about 9000 years ago. Those studying Doggerland say the climate change faced by ancient people is similar to that we have now. They say that a similar situation could affect the billions of people who live within 60 kilometers of a sea shore today if polar ice caps continue to melt at a rapid pace.

One of the reasons I became a teacher was how much I loved the reading and writing process, and how excited I was to help young children develop as readers and writers. I had visions of a class full of busy writers, all with the same sense of excitement I’ve always had about writing and sharing stories.
One day, I discovered the work of Vivian Paley, who developed a storytelling curriculum for young children that involves writing down the contents of students’ drawings and having their classmates act out these stories. I was immediately drawn to Paley’s focus on dramatization(编剧).
One morning, as my students gathered in our classroom for our writing lesson, I told them that they could draw anything they’d like, imaginary or real that day. They discussed with one another what they liked to draw and shared some of these ideas out loud, which helped inspire those who weren’t ready with their own ideas. For the next half-hour or so, I was busy writing down their stories. I observed some of my most hesitant and unwilling students drawing with a sense of focus and purpose.
At the end of the session, we sat in a circle and I explained that we would act out some of their stories. The“playwright(剧作家)”would choose classmates to be the characters in the story, and I would tell the story. Then the first playwright stood up to announce which char- acters she’d need. I watched as one student became a rabbit, another became a fairy, and another became a rain bow cloud. When the play was over, the actors and playwright bowed, and the class clapped for them. The next playwright jumped to her feet, shouting, “My story is next!”

The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions,and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. "For future, longer space missions,we may use the moon as a launching platform," explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that 's already there to grow plants."Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil.“So, what happens when you grow plants in lunar soil? To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients, and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code has already been fully mapped.
For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils,including those that simulate Martian soils. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew.However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more varied in size.
Growing plants in lunar soils may also change the moon itself, according to Dr Stephen Elardo."The moon is a very, very dry place," he said."How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients? The United Kingdom is a group of islands off the coast of Europe — but it hasn’t always been that way. Many thousands of years ago, the UK was attached to Europe by a stretch of land known as Doggerland. And the evidence of the people who lived there is regularly found. Roughly 12,000 years ago, as the last major ice age was ending, the area that is now the North Sea was very different. Instead of water, the area had hills, wetlands and valleys full of trees. Stone Age people lived in Doggerland. They were hunter-gatherers who moved with the seasons and lived by fishing, hunting, and gathering food such as nuts and berries. Over time, they were slowly flooded out of their hunting grounds. Water which had been locked away in ice began to melt, drowning Doggerland. Around 6000 years ago, people were forced onto higher ground in what are today’s England and the Netherlands. The evidence of the ancient people’s presence can be found on the sea floor, where modern fishermen often find bones and tools that date back to about 9000 years ago. Those studying Doggerland say the climate change faced by ancient people is similar to that we have now. They say that a similar situation could affect the billions of people who live within 60 kilometers of a sea shore today if polar ice caps continue to melt at a rapid pace.
