Della Steward got the standard well-wishes on her blog on her 53rd birthday, but she got some unusual messages too. One was about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was in deep sorrow. Could Della help?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd,the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime(风铃)with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” written on it. It now hangs in the four-year-old's bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Della has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th,in 2016,she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond. Its aim is simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Della's blog, others with help from her grand kids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.
Della pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs ,and care packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores. “I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like 'YESSS!'” It's Della's party, and she'll give if she wants to.
24.What were the unusual messages Della got on her 53rd birthday?
A.Help requests. B.Gift ideas.
C.Donation offers. D.Birthday wishes.
25. What can we learn about Della from her gift to the Smith family?
A.She is caring and brave. B.She is loving and helpful.
C.She is patient and romantic. D.She is creative and determined.
26.Which of the following best describes Love in Action?
A. It involves people in acts of kindness. B.It holds the belief that kindness pays off.
C.It offers aid within Della's neighborhood. D.It mainly aims to educate kids to help out.
27. Why does Della's family give her warnings?
A. She thinks little of her family's concern. B.She treats strangers better than her family.
C.She is financially dependent on her family. D. She is too ready to give away her birthday gifts.

Elon Musk isn’t content with electric cars, shooting people into orbit and populating Mars. He also wants to get inside your brain.
His goal is to develop devices that can provide treatment to neural (神经的) diseases and that may one day be powerful enough to put humanity on an equal footing with possible future super intelligent computers.
Not that it’s anywhere close to that yet.
In a video Friday obviously aimed at seeking new employees, Musk showed off the second version of the Neuralink, a device about the size of a large coin. It’s designed to be put in a person’s head. An earlier version of the device has to be placed behind an ear like a huge hearing aid.
But the young company is far from having a commercial product, which would involve complex human trials and governmental approval. Friday’s video showed three pigs. One, named Gertrude, had a Neuralink device in its brain.
Musk, a founder of both the electric car company Tesla Motors and the space-exploration firm SpaceX, has always been worried about that smarter AI machines will outwit humans. His solution? Link our brains to computers so we can keep up with or even win over them in intelligence!
Musk urged coders (程序员), engineers and especially people who have actually created a product to apply. “You don’t need to have brain experience,” he said, adding that this is something that can be learned on the job.
Connecting a brain up directly to electronics is not new. Doctors have already put similar devices in brains to treat such conditions as Parkinson’s disease. In 2016, researchers reported that a man regained some movement in his own hand with a similar brain implant. But Musk’s proposal goes beyond this. Neuralink wants to build on those existing medical treatments and work on devices that could link our brains to computers one day.
28. What can we learn about the first version of the Neuralink?
A. It is smaller than a hearing aid.
B. It can be put in a person’s head.
C. It has to be placed behind the ear.
D. It is already available at the market.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “outwit” in paragraph 6?
A. copy B. defeat C. understand D. destroy
30. What kind of candidates does Elon Musk particularly want?
A. Someone who also wants to create the same device.
B. Doctors who already know how to treat brain diseases.
C. People who have already designed some unique product.
D. Engineers who are good at linking brains to computers.
31. Where is this text likely from?
A. An advertisement. B. A test report.
C. A science fiction novel. D. A news report.
D
While it throws out about 90 pounds of food per person every year, Japan doesn't rank at the top of the world's list of wasteful nations. Still, what’s thrown away represents a serious problem for an island nation with limited landfill space and a goal of greater sustainability. Reinvention can offer an alternative. A Japanese company is taking vegetable peels, cooking oil and other used foodstuffs and making entirely different products.
Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, and its key element, cement, is a major polluter of greenhouse emissions. So what if a more sustainable alternative were possible by making cement with food waste, which also would help reduce greenhouse emissions from landfills where that waste would otherwise be thrown away? That's the idea behind Fabula, a Tokyo-based start-up.
Researchers at Fabula created a recipe to make food concrete by drying leftovers and pressing them into a mold(模具)at a high temperature. The company, founded by researchers at the University of Tokyo, began with items commonly thrown away like cabbage and orange peels but found that almost any food item can be used. It now takes mostly coffee grounds and tea leaves to make its cement. The product's durability depends on the components.
Fabula is currently producing made-to-order household items, such as coasters and dishes, while awaiting its patent. The goal is to make furniture and larger structures once the technology is able to make the cement more durable. Food production companies that can't avoid generating waste during their processes have reached out to work with the company. “We hope to become a matching service between companies that have food waste and companies who want to build things out of such materials," said Takuma Oishi, Fabula's chief commercial officer.
Since the cement is 100 percent eatable, it could create opportunities during disaster response when temporary structures need to be built quickly. The people inside might even tum to them for food. If the technology advances enough, Oishi suggested, someday we may be able "to eat the homes or furniture when necessary".
32.Which problem Japan faces is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.Food waste. B.Garbage littering.
C.Energy crisis. D.Environmental pollution.
33.What's the initial thought of Fabula?
A.Using food remains in recipes.
B.Finding a cheaper alternative to landfills.
C.Making a novel building material from leftovers.
D.Cutting greenhouse gases by recycling home devices.
34.What's paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The diversity of food sources. B.The prospects of the company.
C.The innovation of a traditional cuisine. D.The process of developing food concrete.
35.How is food concrete different from common construction materials?
A.It can fill stomachs. B.It's solid and lasting.
C.It can prevent disasters. D.It's delicate but cost-free.

Mother’s gift
I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang,I would race breathlessly home.My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed my lines so hard with me.But no matter how easily I acted at home,as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's(讲解员) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my pain.Instead of suggesting we practise my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green.Under the huge trees,we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)in the grass in bunches,as if a painter had touched our landscape with a bit of gold.I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion."I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots."From now on,we'll have only roses in this garden."
“But I like dandelions,” I protested.“All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously.“Yes,every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" she asked thoughtfully.I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.“And that is true of people too," she added.“Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Relieved that she had guessed my pain,I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

读后读写参考范文:
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as always as she did. My beloved mom, wearing a shining smile on her soft face, added. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Thanks to her encouragement, which calmed me down gradually, I began to accept that the narrator part was of vital significance. Time went so fast that it reached to the performance day. At first I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, which meant to be in company with me.
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily as she did. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I constantly recall our precious lunchtimes being together, grateful, because smiles on Mother’s face and her kind act foster a man like me now! And all those inspiring words like “Cease to struggle and you cease to live.” have been echoing in my mind as fresh as a daisy.

M: Angelia works for PAF. She’s in the creative department. We know her, and she knows us. But is that an advantage?

M: OK. She enjoys working for the company; she’s not going to leave suddenly; she’s popular in the department, but… that doesn’t mean she’s good at managing a team.

M: ⑮Yeah. But what about the other people in the department? They work with her at the moment. What happens if they have to work for her?
W: Well. ⑯Why don’t we have some talks with the other people, and check out if she’s suitable for the position?
M: Maybe that’s a good idea.

You’ll probably have worked up a pretty good appetite after the game, so we’ll move on to the picnic after. And I think there’s going to be a barbecue there, is that right? ⑳Now we go on with the next step! Jenny, are you and the prize team....
