Lauren Elizabeth Pirie Bath, until a few years ago, was a chef, and a happy one at that time, but she wanted more out of life. She decided to travel. At that time, Lauren discovered blogging and found that she took pretty good pictures. So she decided to post pictures on her blog. In less than 18 months, there were over 200,000 people reading her blog! At first, Lauren only regarded it as a hobby, but companies started paying her to take photos and publish them. In 2013, she was determined to make her dream come true: to become Australia’s first professional photo blogger. It was a challenging job, but she did it. Now Lauren spends three weeks out of every month travelling and has over 464,000 fans following her online.
First visiting Western Australia for work in 2013, Lauren fell in love with northern WA and has been back six times. She has made over 140 work trips, but the best work trip ever was to Broome in the Kimberley region.
“It is extremely beautiful and I can experience the indigenous Australia there more than anywhere else. The Kimberley region, in particular, is unique and untouched.” She told the interviewer, and as a photographer, Lauren loves the bright light and amazing colours: red rocks, green plants, blue-green waters and blue skies.
To work full time in travel, she has to love nature and tries to take every opportunity to get outside and admire the natural world. She loves to photograph the rising sun, as well as enjoys photo graphing animals such as dolphins and kangaroos.
Lauren uses the photography to make an impact on people, especially when it comes to environmental issues. Today she has been photographing a crocodile swimming close to the boat the Kimberley Quest all day. When she posts the picture online, she will make a comment about how bad it is to feed wild crocodiles. This crocodile is used to passengers throwing food from boats and now she is becoming familiar with humans. Over time, this could make her a danger to people living to the area. If everyone can do something to make others aware of the problem, then that’s part of the solution.
    24. What made Lauren decide to change her job?
    A. She desired to travel.
    B. She wanted more out of life.
    C. Companies paid her to take photos.
    D. Many people read her blog in a short time.
    25. Which word has the closest meaning to the underlined word “indigenous” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Foreign. B. Native. C. Attractive. D. Familiar.
    26. Why does Lauren Bath post the crocodile’s picture online?
    A. To tell people the crocodile is in danger.
    B. To show her wonderful photographing skill.
    C. To emphasize the importance of environmental protection.
    D. To remind people of the consequences of feeding wild animals.

    C
It’s easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job market; after all, you’ve likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of human hands.
But there’s no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU sociology professor Eric Dahlin. Dahlin’s research found that robots aren’t replacing humans at the rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.
To understand the relationship between job loss and robots, Dahlin surveyed nearly 2,000 people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the percentage of employees whose employers have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.
The study found that only 14% of workers say they’ve seen their job replaced by a robot. But those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs from humans by about three times.
“Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated,” says Dahlin. Those who haven’t lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about three times. Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the situation of robots taking over jobs.
The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren’t replacing workers. Rather, workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way. “An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store,” says Dahlin. “This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places.”
    27. How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research?
    A. By asking people questions. B. By comparing early studies.
    C. By interviewing employers. D. By studying new businesses.
    28. What might add to people’s worry about robot takeover according to the text?
    A. Low pay. B. Physical health.
    C. News reports. D. Fewer workplaces.
    29. Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with?
    A. Robots can work as human partners. B. Job markets will be affected seriously.
    C. All human workers will be replaced. D. Work experience matters too much.

    D
The first traffic lights in the United States were installed (安装) because of an increase in traveller on the road in the 1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities built traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.
Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at corssroads. Then, William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal Highway Administration set uniform standards in 1935 for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.
Red is the colour with the longest wavelength, which means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets diffused(扩散)less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a combination of all three!
Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.
    30. What’s the purpose of installing traffic lights in the 1920s?
    A. To increase the speed of cars.
    B. To improve the flow of the traffic.
    C. To reduce traffic jams in towns and cities.
    D. To obey the standards of the government.
    31. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. The absence of traffic signal systems.
    B. The installation of the first traffic signal.
    C. The first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal.
    D. The existence of different traffic lights and patterns.
    32. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
    A. The wavelength of the three colour.
    B. The differences among the three colour.
    C. The reasons for choosing red as the stop signal.
    D. The relationship between red colour and its wavelength.
    33. Which may be a disadvantage of red as a stop sign?
    A. It can’t be seen in the distance.
    B. It is a kind of highly reflective colour.
    C. It is not suitable to be used in school zones.
    D. It can not be clearly seen in certain surroundings.

Poetry is one of mankind’s oldest art forms. Since first analyzed by Aristotle, poetry has been part of every major art movement, and some say it expresses emotion better than any other forms. Reading poetry is necessary to gain a full understanding of the world and has many additional benefits .
The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements to vocabulary. Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long-term brain health. Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are more resistant to Alzheimer’s.
Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one-dimensional (维度). Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement encouraged with other forms. Readers of poetry are more likely than non-readers to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits not only students, but also anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective upon documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give greater control over language itself.
The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite reader and writer across time and cultural boundaries, which poetry offers in a powerful way. Poetry sets off memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy. A reader might have no practical idea of what life was like during the Elizabethan-era in England. However, Shakespeare’s Sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into people’s feelings in the 17th century.
    34. Which of the following shows the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain?
    A. It makes one act more creatively.
    B. It improves peopled long-term memory.
    C. It improve s one’s ability of analysing issues.
    D. It makes one less likely to catch Alzheimer’s.
    35. In what way does poetry improve critical thinking?
    A. Readers have to have a good control over language.
    B. Readers must understand the obvious meaning of poetry.
    C. Readers have to analyze information to form viewpoints.
    D. Readers have to gain a better perspective upon documents.
    36. Why does the author mention Shakespeare’s Sonnets?
    A. To show the universal themes of poetry.
    B. To show poetry helps develop our empathy.
    C. To show Shakespeare’s understanding of life.
    D. To show poetry motivates us learn different cultures.
    37. What might be the best title of the text?
    A. Rewards of reading poetry. B. Ways to appreciate poetry.
    C. Reasons for reading poetry. D. Significance of poetry in history.
