    21. What is the study mainly about?Institute of Psychology (心理研究所)
    1141 Cumberland Avenue, Pittsburgh
    12 June 2016
Volunteers are wanted for a study trying to find out the effect of aging on cognition (认知). Everyone's cognition is characterised by “thinking styles”. Recent research has shown that older
people use different thinking styles to younger people. The aim of this study is to investigate what
these differences are, and to discover what are responsible for these differences.
People from adult age groups will take part in the study. We are particularly eager to attract people between 50 and 70, and especially men of this age, because usually fewer people of this group volunteer.
If you choose to take part, you will be asked to complete a set of questionnaires and take an
assessment (评估) at the institute. The assessment takes about 60 minutes, and includes computer and pen-and-paper puzzles and tasks. For this you can schedule a time that suits you. Volunteers
will be repaid $40 for their time.
If you think you might be interested in this project, we would like to hear from you. Contact Kylie Riordan at kylie-r@google.com or on 302-555-6773.
    Dear Kylie,
I would like to take part in your study.
I took part in another cognition study at your institute six weeks ago, so I have some ideas of
the kind of things I need to do. However, since it is now mid-September, you may have finished your study. If you do want me, I'm free on most weekends.
I also want to know if you'll pay travel costs. In the last study, they did not, but they said they
were thinking of doing so in the future. If I take the train, it'll cost me $5.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,
    Melody Cranberry

Technology use seems to be the new wave of addiction hitting people on all ages. The next time you’re in a crowded public place, look at the people around you. It's hard to find someone who isn’t glued to the tiny screen, fingers moving at lightning speeds, texting their friends, emailing co-workers or
listening to music. It may seem ridiculous (荒谬的) that someone is that addicted to such a small object.
I've seen people who seem to be at their wits’ end if their phone has been taken away, lost or left at home.
Some people may ask, “What’s wrong with technology use? It's a way for people to communicate.” While this is true, the overuse of technology isn’t always suitable in certain settings. Schools are
becoming stricter about the use of mobile phones, iPads and other electronics in classrooms. Various
workplaces have signs hanging on their walls warning employees that “Mobile phone use is not permitted.”
Electronics may be a way for people to communicate and stay in touch with each other, but the
disadvantages may outweigh the benefits. People are losing the ability to hold face-to-face conversations with others.
However, it’s hard to avoid electronics in this day and age because almost everything is turning into
an electronic format. Books, originally meant for paper design, are now being transferred (转存) to electronic forms. Photo albums, and even yearbooks, can now be viewed via the Internet. With this
growing trend(趋势), future generations certainly become even more addicted to technology.
Is there a cure for electronic addiction? Simply turning electronics off for an hour or two a day may
help to an extent, but it will not completely overcome electronic addiction. There only seems to be one cure left, and it may be the hardest: self-control.

Junior Alvarado, a high school student in the Washington Leadership Academy, often struggled in
his math classes and earned poor grades. The teachers at the Washington Leadership Academy used computer programs to identify the areas he was weak in and design a learning plan just for him. “They explain the problem step by step. It wouldn't be as fast, but at your speed,” said the 15-year-old, “Now I feel better about my maths skills.”
The application of technology in schools is part of a larger idea of personalised learning. This idea
has been gaining in popularity in recent years. Personalised learning is a way of teaching centring around the interests and needs of individual (单独的) students instead of entire classes as a whole. It includes
flexible (灵活的) learning environments and specially-designed education plans. Students can decide
what and how they learn. That way, they are able to master subjects at their own speed.
Joseph Webb, headmaster of the Washington Leadership Academy, says the digital tools help teachers identify problems students are facing before they become too serious. “We can solve them right then and there; we don't have to wait for the problem to come to us,” he said.

    高一英语学科试题 第 5 页 共 12 页
Still, many researchers say it is too early to tell if personalised learning works better than traditional teaching. A recent study found that personalised learning only led to small improvements. It found only a 3% improvement in math and even smaller improvements in reading compared to traditional teaching methods. In addition, experts in children’s health warn that the overuse of technology can damage face-to
-face relationships and young people’s interest in physical activity.
Some teachers have their doubts as well. Marla Kilfoyle, a teacher in a public high school, admits
that technology can be helpful in the classroom in many ways. But she argues that no computer program should ever replace the personal touch, support and inspiration (启发) teachers give their students.
    28. Why does the author mention the example of Junior Alvarado?
    A. To encourage schools to use technology.
    B. To introduce the idea of personalised learning.
    C. To advise students to try a new way of learning.
    D. To draw the teacher's attention to the weak students.
    29. What does personalised learning mean?
    A. Students learn on their own.
    B. Students can do whatever they like.
    C. Students learn at their own pace.
    D. Students learn with a teacher face to face.
    30. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. The digital tools. B. The learning problems.
    C. Students. D. Teachers.
    31. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Only a few teachers prefer personalised learning.
    B. Personalised learning is a failed attempt to help slow learners.
    C. Computer programs are likely to replace the role of teachers.
    D. Experts are worried about the overuse of technology.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural
groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these
    高一英语学科试题 第 6 页 共 12 页
cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people
or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that
person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a
sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this
understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
    32. What does the author say about silence in conversations?
    A. It implies anger.
    B. It promotes friendship.
    C. It is content-based.
    D. It is culture-specific.
    33. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?
    A. The Chinese.
    B. The French.
    C. The Mexicans.
    D. The Russians.
    34. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?
    A. Let it continue as the patient pleases.
    B. Break it while treating patients.
    C. Make use of its healing effects.
    D. Evaluate its harm to patients.
    35. What may be the best title for the text?
    A. Sound and Silence
    B. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is Gold
    C. Silence to Native Americans
    D. What It Means to Be Silent

Do you feel like you are not living the life you want? It's your life, so why does it seem like you are not in control? Below are some important lessons for life.
You are constantly (一直) comparing yourself to others. 36 It will mostly contribute to making
you feel more miserable (痛苦的) because it produces a lot of bad emotions. Comparing yourself to
others is pointless because we all have our own unique paths to follow. 37 This will help you grow

You are afraid of change. Why are most people afraid of change? Mostly because we fear the unknown, and anything that threatens our serenity (平静) is seen as problematic. But it does not have to
be this way. 38 It teaches us to adapt to situations we never knew we could. It helps us discover
ourselves. Accepting change also helps us to be more adaptable in life. This will afford you more possibilities and opportunities in your life.
You are wasting time on things you cannot control. The painful truth is that there are many things
that you cannot control in your life. 39 How do you stop wasting time on things that are out of your

    F. The information you are using as a basis for your judgement is likely incorrect.
    G. The sooner you realise that fact, the closer you get to living the life you want.

Learning Chinese calligraphy 56 (list) as one of the must-do things when I came to China. Now,
I’m in the course of learning this unique art, 57 value is considered very high in China, even across
East Asia today. It is not only 58 ancient artistic form of human language, but it also reflects Chinese

64 a very specific way; unlike a pen or pencil, the paintbrush is held upright in the hand. I need to be
extra careful when changing the angle or direction of the brush, especially if I press too hard on the paper.
After taking the lesson, I now understand the difficulty of calligraphy and that it will take efforts and
commitment 65 (master) this art form. Yet, I am grateful to learn such a special Chinese tradition.

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship in a new town.
My parents had moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs, but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I had to say goodbye to my old friends. It felt frightful to be a new student in my new school. When my classmates were chatting, I felt left out. I was not good at math or history, nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid (羞怯的). I had a few friends back at my hometown
and it seemed that they were the only ones with whom I could be friends for my whole life. I felt there
was no room for anyone else on my friends list. I was ashamed of myself, and believed I deserved no notice from others. That is, until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, frank and easy to be around. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to
come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day but I never talked to her, even though we were in the same class. How I wished I could be like her, or at least be a friend of hers.
It was another ordinary day. I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus.
Birds were singing with their friends, but who could I sing with? I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.
