It’s Thanksgiving. It’s that time of the year again when families and friends gather around tables across the country to give thanks and celebrate the past year. Unfortunately, not everyone can make it at home for the holidays this year; particularly the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces(USAF) who are selflessly spending their holiday season sacrificing themselves for others.
The Guinness Brand will be making sure these men and women-and their “empty chairs”—are not forgotten with the brand encouraging drinkers of legal age to Raise Your Glass to Heroes on Wednesday, Dec.17.
Thousands of bars across the country will be participating on this date. The Guinness Gives Back Fund will donate $ 1 to Packages From Home—a charity that collects and gives out care packages for those in the USAF-for every adult consumer that participates, up to $ 10,000. More details to come on how people can be involved.
“The selfless men and women of the United States Armed Forces truly epitomize the values of the Made of More campaign and we could not be happier to support them during this holiday season, ”said Guinness Brand Director Doug Campbell. “As we spend time with loved ones in the coming weeks, it’s important that we take time to thank those making sacrifices(牺牲)day in, day out. Providing these individuals with some comfort items from home is the least we can do to show our gratitude and respect.”
Guinness’ Raise Your Glass to Heroes initiative(倡议)comes less than one year after the brand debuted(首次亮相)on the national television spot, “Empty Chair”. In the ad, a barman and local community keep the spirit of a deployed serviceman present in the bar by pouring a pint of Guinness beer and setting it down in front of an empty chair to remain undisturbed until the day that he returns home to a hero’s welcome.
To learn more, about the Guinness Gives Back Fund and Guinness’ efforts to support those who epitomize the Made of More, or to contribute to its fundraising efforts, please visit www. GuinnessGivesBack. com.

5.What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A.Thousands of bars across the country will be closed.
B.People in the USAF will gain more money and support.

December is a “big deal” in Sweden and Finland not only because of Christmas, but because Saint Lucia’s Day is on Dec.13. Starting in kindergarten and continuing all throughout high school, on this day one lucky girl is selected to be “Saint Lucia”. For many girls, this is a big deal, though I personally really fear being picked and much prefer being one of Lucia’s handmaids(侍女).
It is not certain how the Saint Lucia tradition found its way to Sweden, and then also to Finland. The legend of Saint Lucia is known in most European countries, and has its roots in Italy. It is thought that during a time when the rulers of the land did not approve of Christianity(基督教), a woman named Lucia decided to try and spread the word of God and help the poor. Lucia was put on trial, and when she refused to give up her belief, she was sentenced to being burned. But when the guards tried to light the fire, it would not light. Unfortunately, this did not save Lucia, who at last was killed by a knife.
No one knows exactly how this legend has changed into the unique Swedish tradition today, but there are certainly some factors that can be recognized. Saint Lucia, a girl dressed in a long white dress with a crown of candles in her hair, brings light and good spirit to everybody, lightening up the cold December weather.
Both in Sweden and Finland, Saint Lucia is a nationally celebrated tradition. The people of the city or town can then vote for their favorite girl out of several candidates, and the winner is crowned on December 13th together with her entourage (随从). This year, 18-year-old high school student Elin Anderson was crowned Lucia, and following her coronation (加冕礼) she will appear at around 80 different events over the next month in her role as “a bringer of light”.
8.Which of the following is TRUE about the Saint Lucia’s Day?
A.It originated from an Asian country.
B.It is celebrated in Sweden and Finland.
C.All the girls hoped to be selected to be a “Saint Lucia”.
D.All the girls take part in the celebration of the tradition.
9.To spread the belief of Christianity, Lucia __________.
A.donated her money to the poor. B.was severely punished by the rulers.
C.was burnt to death by the rulers. D.won the crown.
10.If you are lucky to be selected to be Lucia, you can do the following except __________.
A.take part in various events. B.wear special costumes.
C.act as “a bringer of light”. D.take charge of the coronation.
11.What is the text mainly about?
A.Different ways to celebrate Saint Lucia’s Day.
B.Different versions of the legend of Saint Lucia.
    C.Saint Lucia’s Day—A traditional Swedish festival.
D.How the Saint Lucia tradition found its way to Sweden.

The Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time. The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become the traditional activities of the festival.
The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance(香气), and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine. People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.
Early in Han Dynasty, about 2000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’ an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展成) into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy the autumn scenery.
But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”, a homonym (同音异义词) of the Chinese word for “high”. Mountains are high, so eating cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.
12.Why do people carry a spray of dogwood on Chongyang Festival?
A.Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance.
B.Because the dogwood can be used as a Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because the dogwood has a long history as a medicine.
D.Because people believed the dogwood could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from chill.
13.People now climb mountains on the Chongyang Festival .
A.to have a last outing of the year before the onset of winter
    B.to get some dogwoods
    C.to climb a high platform
D.to get some exercise as well as enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery
14.People living in plains far from mountains eat cakes because .
A.the Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”
B.the Chinese word “Gao” for “cake” has the same sound with the Chinese word for “high”
C.they often take cakes to go for a picnic on the festival
    D.they like eating cakes
15.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The Double Ninth Festival is on September 9th.
B.People climbed mountains to celebrate the Chongyang Festival in Han Dynasty.
C.People often celebrate the Chongyang Festival in the open air.
D.Eating cakes is just like climbing mountains.

Houses are very different. Some are huge and have gold swimming pools. Pop stars live in those. Some are in rows with a brick wall at one end and overlook a pie factory. Franklin Gates lives in one of those. Number Three, Stanley Street, to be exact.
He loved living on Stanley Street. Everyone was friendly. All his mates were there and the smells from the pie factory, Mmm, delicious! There was just one problem. Franklin’s mum and dad wanted to move. His mum was expecting twins and they needed another bedroom. “This house is too small, ” said his mum. Next day, there was a “For Sale” sign stuck by Franklin’s door.
Franklin and his best friend Josh stared at the words of doom. “What am I going to do, Josh?” said Franklin.
Josh frowned. “Has your house got problems? Number forty’s got problems and no one wants to buy it.” Franklin stared at number forty. It looked all right to him. “What kind of problems?” he asked.
“Oh, mice and damp and really horrible wallpaper.” Franklin sighed. His house was warm and friendly and it had just been painted, worse luck.
Mrs. Cox lived next door to Franklin in a big house that had once been the corner shop. Just then, she came out, followed by her dog Zack.
“I’m sorry you’re moving,” Mrs. Cox said. “So am I,” Franklin grumbled. Mrs. Cox patted Franklin on the arm. “Never mind. Your house might take months to sell.”
However, a few days later, Franklin came home from school to find a man in the kitchen. His name was Mr. Bragg and was interested in buying the house. He glared at Franklin and trod on his toes, without saying sorry. Franklin’s heart sank when Mr. Bragg said he wanted to come back for a second visit on Saturday morning.
At school, Franklin asked, “Josh. Does your elder sister still work in the fish shop?” Josh nodded. “Good. Listen, I’ve got a job for you.”
Franklin cupped his hand over Josh’s ear and began whispering his plan.

16.根据空前一句“The kind old man is often described in a red suit with white beard and a big bag full of presents.(这位善良的老人经常被描述成穿着红衣服、白胡子和一个装满礼物的大袋子)”和下面各段介绍的关于圣诞老人衣服颜色的变化可知,此处应该表转折,来承接上下文。
17.根据空后的“Santa’s clothes were first said to be in this color in the early 17th century.(据说圣诞老人的衣服最早是在17世纪初用的这种颜色)”再结合选项可知,空处提到了一种颜色,而这种颜色并不是我们现在看到的红色,故B选项“因为绿色被认为可以战胜寒冷”符合语境,下文this color指选项中的the green color。故选B。
18.根据上文“Setting the stage for the modern-day description, in the 1860s, cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for the American political magazine Harper’s Weekly. In his work, Santa Claus was drawn complete with deer and a sleigh(雪橇)(19世纪60年代,漫画家托马斯·纳斯特为美国政治杂志《哈珀周刊》画了圣诞老人,为现代描述奠定了基础。
20.根据空前的“Even though the red color image has already existed before, due to the magical power of Coca-Cola’s advertising, the kindly, grandfatherly man in red clothes impressed people, together with the well-known slogan(标语) “The Pause That Refreshes”.(尽管红色的形象早已存在,但由于可口可乐广告的神奇力量,这个和蔼可亲、慈祥的红衣服男子,连同著名的口号“the Pause That Refreshes”,给人留下了深刻的印象)”可知,由于广告宣传的力量, 穿着红色外套并且和善如祖父般的老人给人们留下了深刻的印象。

故填which。
the same“一样”,固定搭配。故填the。
故填her。
故填was beaten。

    One possible version:
Franklin cupped his hand over Josh’s ear and began whispering his plan. When Josh heard what Franklin wanted, his mouth opened wide enough to swallow a dentist. He cried, “I’ll get into trouble!” “It’s my only chance,” Franklin begged. On Saturday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Gates were still outside when Mr. Bragg rang the doorbell. Entering the house, Mr. Bragg stopped and sniffed the air, asking curiously “What’s that disgusting smell?” Franklin told him the factory does fish pie on Saturdays, which made Mr. Bragg frowned. He pulled a face and ran out of the door.
Mr. and Mrs. Gates were very angry. “You’d better explain what’s going on!” Franklin knew he was in big trouble. He cleared up all smelly fishes in their house which had been brought by Josh. At last, he said sorry to his mum and dad. Mrs. Cox arrived and came up with a good idea that she would like to swap her house with Franklin’s. “So we had one big house,” grinned Franklin.
Bragg。

    ②.令人厌恶的:disgusting/nasty
Entering the house, Mr. Bragg stopped and sniffed the air asking curiously “What’s that disgusting smell?”
[高分句型2].Franklin told him the factory does fish pie on Saturdays, which made Mr. Bragg frowned.(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句)
