Earlier this month,I paid a visit to Baluran National Park in eastern Java with my family. This park, named after a dead volcano,is the only place in Indonesia that looks like an African savanna (热带草
原). Therefore,it is called Africa in Indonesia. You can see deer, large water buffalo, small mice, peacocks,
eagles, monkeys and much more animals.
When walking in the park, we really had the feeling that we were in Africa. This was mainly due to its climate. The air was hot and dry rather than warm and wet. It was completely different from what I got used to in Indonesia and I was so surprised.
In the park, you will never get bored because the whole neighborhood is full of monkeys. But these
monkeys are rude and aggressive (好斗的). Monkeys guarded our house and wanted food. When we didn't
give them food, they would rob us of food. So each of us was offered a stick by the rangers (护林员). They taught us that when the monkeys were too aggressive we must lift the stick. And it worked perfectly.
In the late afternoon, we went for a walk to explore the area. On the way, we saw many species of trees
that couldn't be found anywhere else in Indonesia. Soon the sunset approached so we decided to go back. But darkness fell about halfway through the journey. We only had poor light from our phones. And we heard only the sounds of animals around us. It was possible that hungry animals might come close to us and take us as their dinner. We started to feel scared and quickened our steps. Just when we were about to reach our breaking point, we saw a ranger, who comforted us and led us to safety.
In the evening, we talked with the ranger about his life in Baluran. And after dinner, he invited us to
fish with him at sunrise. We really had a great time in the park, and I always look forward to coming back and experiencing all the excitements again.
    24. What do we learn about Baluran National Park?
    A. It is a great place for wild animals. B. It is located in the middle of Africa.
    C. Tourists find its climate very pleasant. D. Tourists usually visit it for its volcano.
    25. Why was each member of the author's family offered a stick?
    A. To help them walk easily. B. To drive away unfriendly monkeys.
    C. To play games with monkeys. D. To use it to give monkeys food.
    26. What made the author and her family quicken their steps?
    A. The anxiety to charge their phones. B. The desire to tell the rangers about their adventure.
    C. The worry about being robbed at night. D. The fear of being attacked by wild animals.
    27. Why does the author write the passage?
    A. Encourage people to travel to Indonesia. B. Give tips on how to visit Baluran National Park.
    C. Share her experience at Baluran National Park. D. Advertise Baluran National Park.
    C
People have always supposed that there is a huge gulf between animal evolution and human development. However, recent research into animals indicates that animals are continuously designing innovative methods to finish their tasks. Examining the nature and results of their creativity can help us understand evolution.
Research shows that animals too can be creative. By inventing new behavioral patterns and adjusting
their behavior to new contexts, as well as to changes in social and ecological environments, researchers show that animal innovation too can be diverse. For instance, chimpanzees (猩猩) use tools such as sharp spines and stalks to remove the hearts of palm vegetables from trees. Herring gulls (鲜鱼海鸥) found out
quite a cruel way of killing rabbits—drowning them in the sea.
Innovative species tend to survive when they enter new places, but novel behavior cannot be recognized unless “normal” behavior is studied. Researchers can now count and document the innovations that have been created by species, which would help them to quantify their creativity. Studies also show us
that all animals are not equally inventive, with primates (灵长目动物) tending to be more innovative due to
    their bigger brains.
The greatest scientific significance has been the innovation shown by animals such as apes, capuchins
and macaques among primates. These species of primates possess the biggest brains in proportion to their body sizes. They are also heavy tool users. Their broad diets and complex forms of learning are also

insightful. They indicate an evolutionary strategy that gave them new solutions to life’s challenges.
However, even if these animals show innovativeness, they do not have the ability to improve upon solutions of others. Unless they share information accurately and copy each other’s inventions. their creative inventions are likely to vanish before they can be innovated further. This ability can be managed only by humans, for we are able to build on shared knowledge.
    28. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the first paragraph mean?
    A. Connection. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Difference.
    29. Why does the author mention “chimpanzees” and “Herring gulls” in Paragraph 2?
    A. They create innovations in different ways. B. They are both heavy tool users.
    C. They are both creative. D. They kill other animals in the same cruel way.
    30. What can we learn about animal creativity?
    A. It is equally distributed among animals. B. Animals’ innovations are easy to be identified.
    C. It helps animals adapt to the environment. D. Animals’ innovations are facing huge challenges.
    31. What aspect of animals does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. Their inability to better others’ inventions. B. Their willingness to learn from each other.
    C. Their ability to share information accurately. D. Their unwillingness to cooperate effectively.
    D
This September, students at the University of Massachusetts discovered a new menu at their canteens:
the “diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm’s field. The options were plant-heavy, locally grown, and involved little or no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says
Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices impact climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store and restaurant can be more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car.
Small changes in eating habits may make a big difference. Studies point to the food system as a
significant cause of global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about 1/4 of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (排放). Beef is a regular target. “If, on average, Americans cut 1/4 pound of beef
per week from their diet, it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,” says Sujatha Bergen, director of
health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved, Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $1,600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices have a big impact on climate,” says Megan
Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But she adds that substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.
    32. What is the purpose of the new menu at the University of Massachusetts?
    A. To market the cold dishes. B. To raise low carbon awareness.
    C. To reduce the cost of packaging. D. To popularize the plant-heavy diet.
    33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
    A. Universities are working together in climate action.
    B. Food is a decisive factor for climate change.
    C. Food choices matter much to global warming.
    D. Fuel-efficient cars are not affordable for consumers.
    34. What does Sujatha Bergen say about beef?
    A. It plays a significant role in American’s diet. B. It has great influence on carbon reduction.
    C. It has no relationship with gas emission. D. It is popular among millions of car drivers.
    35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Food System Reform: A Successful Trial B. Global Warming: An Approaching Danger
    C. Carbon Emission: A Killer, or Healer? D. Low Carbon Diet: A trend, or More?
    第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分。满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We are living in an age where we expect instant content from everything. Packages must be delivered
within 24 hours and meals at a restaurant need to arrive within 30 minutes. 36 The good news is that
patience can be developed with time and practice. Here are some ways to help you become more patient.
37 Take a slightly longer route on your walk home. Appreciate the smell of your food before
having a meal you love. Practice things like word puzzles that will test your patience. By doing these small things, you'll develop your patience.
Knowing your triggers(诱因)will help you take better charge of a situation the next time you find
yourself impatient. 38 For example, maybe you grow impatient when you see a long line at your
favorite coffee shop. You can choose another time to go when you know it'll be less busy.
Slowing things down when appropriate can help you build patience. Take some aspects in your life you
can afford to slow down. For example, wait for your coffee to brew (冲泡) on a weekend morning. 39
Accept things that are out of your control. If you are stuck in a traffic jam, there's little you can do to
get out of it. 40 You can either observe the cars around you or play some music in your car.
    A. Looking at things from another perspective.
    B. Being more patient reduces your stress levels.
    C. Enjoy such process occasionally rather than rush to do it.
    D. Identify the things, places or people that make you impatient.
    E. Many people have grown more and more impatient as a result.
    F. Becoming more patient is a long journey and start it with small steps.
    G. Instead of getting frustrated, accept your situation and make the best of it.

Molly ran back home from school and dropped her schoolbag on the sofa. Then on the table she saw “Mum’s Wish Book” —a mail order catalog from a gift shop. “Mum,” she said excitedly to herself, “this year you’ll get the gloves you want!” Molly had walked a dog for a neighbor and saved her money all year to buy Mum the gloves.
She opened “Mum’s Wish Book” and hoped that she could find these gloves in it. So carefully did she
look through that tears ran down her face when she saw the gloves in the catalog. Mum wouldn’t buy them for herself, because the family had a hard time on the farm. She once heard Mum say to Dad, “Maybe some day, I’ll have the money to get them.”
Molly ran out by the back door and went straight to the post office. There she carefully filled out the
order form torn from the catalog.
“I need to buy a stamp to send the form.” She said to Mr. Smith, the only worker in the post office. “Umm, a pair of gloves?” said Mr. Smith, as he passed a stamp to her.
“Yes, It’s a Christmas gift for Mum, but please don’t tell her. It’s our secret, OK?” Molly didn’t realize
how white Mr. Smith’s beard was until that moment. In fact, he reminded her of Santa Claus.
As Molly walked back home, she decided to tell Dad her secret. “You’ve got to check the mailbox every day,” said Molly quietly to Dad. He nodded, with a big smile.
Coming home from school every day, Molly peeked at Dad when Mum wasn’t looking , but every time
    he shook his head.
On Christmas Eve, Dad came back from the mailbox, still empty handed. Molly felt sad when she went to bed, because she didn’t have the gloves for Mum.
