In February, America celebrates Black History Month. It is time to examine the lives of African Americans like Joseph Rainey.

Joseph Rainey was born in South Carolina in 1832 in an enslaved family. Only fragments of information remain from his early life. He became a barber like his father. And before the Civil War, he’d established his own business-Rainey's Hair Cutting Salon-in Charleston. In 1859, he married Susan Elizabeth Cooper, the daughter of a free black family from Charleston.

On April 12, 1861, the newly formed Confederate Army opened fire on Fort Sumter, a Union outpost in Charleston Harbor-the beginning of the Civil War. Rainey served in the Army as a waiter or steward on a blockade-running steamer. Taking advantage of the fact that "foreign" vessels were still permitted to trade in South Carolina, he boarded a trade ship to Nova Scotia, then to St. George's, Bermuda.

In Bermuda, Rainey received informal tutelage from a highly educated customer at his barber shop. During this period, he had a growing command of conventional spelling and read the great works of literature from Plato to Shakespearean tragedies. He also joined a social club and was involved in approving death resolutions on Abranam Lincoln's 1865 assassination(暗杀), where Lincoln was shot in the head at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C.

In 1866, the war was over. Rainey-armed with new wealth， new knowledge and new social status-was ready to return to South Carolina, a state that needed him. And thus Rainey began his political career. In 1870 he entered the Capitol building as the first African American member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Bobby Donaldson, a history professor at the University of South Carolina, said, "Joseph Rainey is described as the founding father of our nation". Rainey supported civil rights, education and economic development. Unsurprisingly, The Wandering Earth Il has been a success since its release on the first day of the Chinese New Year taking in an eye-watering 2.9 billion yuan in 1l days, breaking 36 records and achieving 91 milestones in Chinese film.

Directed by Frant Gwo and based on Liu Cixin's novel, The Wandering Earth Il is more than just filling for the first film's blanks, connecting plot line dots and unfolding the full picture. In my opinion, unlike most sequel movies, it progresses greatly compared to the first one in terms of aesthetics(美学), imagination, philosophy and cultural depth.

With stunning special effects and wild imagination, the film offers breath-taking cinematic spectacles full of huge spaceships and drone swarm battles and visualizes some of the technological wonders that only appeared in sci-fi books in the past, such as the space elevator. It is inspiring to see the huge improvement in the Chinese film industry and film-making technology.

If the hard tech is what strikes awe into the people's hearts, the Chinese philosophy behind the scene is what makes people deep in thought. We’ve seen enough Hollywood superhero films. But this film presents a disaster story from an oriental point of view, where humans work as a team to face the overwhelming crisis. No hero can save the Earth single-handedly, still, every effort matters. And the international unity highly emphasized in the film takes root in the real world and are consistent with China's current attitude and approach in a world of changes unseen in a century.

Overall, The Wandering Earth ll is marvelous in many ways. I believe both the Chinese people and the world area waiting what comes next for Chinese cinema.

Steven Strauss was skeptical when he first heard about a poplar tree(杨树) bio-engineered to suck more carbon dioxide out of the air. So when two entrepreneurs-Maddie Hall and Patrick Mellor-asked him to help test out the idea, Strauss was interested but hesitant. "If it works, it would be a wonderful thing", he said, "But typically in research on agriculture or forestry, it works in the lab or the greenhouse, but tells you nothing.”

Four years later, these two entrepreneurs have raised $30 million for Living Carbon, a company that aims to plant between 4 million and 5 million poplar trees by the spring of 2024, using photo-synthesis enhanced seeds. Eventually, the company hopes to enter the carbon offset market, selling credits to companies that need to reach net-zero emission goals to help fight global warming.

One of the field trials will be conducted in a forest at Oregon State University, where Strauss is a distinguished professor of forest biotechnology. Other locations are throughout the United States, including the site of an abandoned mine in Pennsylvania with degraded soils.

Co-founders Hall and Mellor hope the trials will prove that the taller poplar trees can store as much as 27 percent more CO2 than ordinary trees. The company's next step will be to show that the Co2 can be stored in wood, outlasting the poplar's lifespan, which can reach up to 200 years.

The Department of Energy, which provided Living Carbon with a $500,000 grant in 2021, predicted that the company's approach could remove billions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere if successfully scaled up. Investors have since lined up, including Toyota Ventures and Singapore's state-owned Temasek.

Hall, the CEO of Living Carbon, has described high hopes for the project. "Today Earth no longer has the ability to avoid carbon as quickly," she wrote in a blog post, "And now it's time for the big suck.”

Last month my new school had witnessed the First Online Life Skills Show. Here comes a brief account.

The activity, consisting with two parts, began with a talent show where participants demonstrated our practical skills. This was followed by a voted process. Some distinguished teachers acting as judge made comments and gave awards to whomever displayed the best expertise. However, what made this show great success is that not only did it provide a golden opportunity for the participants to sharpen their skills and it also sparked audience's passion for acquiring various life skills.

Both students and teachers speak high of this activity. I sincerely hoped that more activities of this kind will be held in the future.

When it comes to my experiences in high school, there is no doubt that a spring outing is the most rewarding one that I will never forget.
