Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However ,the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister's friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me around at the carnival. He did not let me down.

Well, the carnival is all about the samba. It's a style of music and dance which has its origins in Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being conquered, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here.  Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals(和声).It’s the kind of music that you couldn't help dancing to. And I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, I couldn't help moving my hips and shoulders.

Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come.

So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I'm afraid I can't tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome.  We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.

Gong Linna, a famous Chinese musician and founder of Chinese New Art Music, put her music teaching methods into practice for the first time at the Tracing Roots(寻根)practice concert of the Affiliated High School of Peking University on May 23.

The first song of the concert, Search High and Low, refers to the classical poem Li Sao,  “The road ahead will be long. I shall search high and low.”  “It's arranged to be sung in the beginning by all performers, showing that we should all search high and low for our roots,” Gong Linna says.

To explore the education and popularization of Chinese music, in 2017,Gong Linna established a research and development team which includes musicologist(音乐学家),Du Yaxiong and music historian, Zhao Zhongming, to discuss her music teaching methods and summarize the vocal skills of Chinese music.

Gong Linna believed that popularization of Chinese music should depend on primary and secondary schools rather than music schools. The children's strong love for music and their outstanding performance amazed Gong Linna,“When singing, they are completely concentrated on the music. Music brings light and richness to one's spiritual world. So, learning to sing is never about passing examinations, but about enjoying the music.”

Lu Yueming, a teacher of the school's art center, said, “The children worked really hard and kept in mind Gong Linna’s instructions(讲授).Seeing their performanceI know that they truly fell in love with traditional Chinese music. I hope more Chinese students can benefit from the teaching practice in the near future.”

“Seeing the children perform my pieces, I realized I should write more songs for them, ”Lao Luo, Gong Linna's husband said proudly. “It's a great encouragement for me to see how much they like the songs, and they really need content related to Chinese culture.” Speaking about her future plans, Gong Linna told the reporter she would like to further popularize her teaching methods and Chinese music.

Nowadays with the development of technology, people have gradually depended on the mobile phones seriously. Many people, especially young adults, like to use social media to connect with others. However, everyone takes no notice of an important point. That's face-to-face communication between people is missing.

Social media is all about connecting with others. But a new study suggests that too much social media use makes people feel alone and lonely. The study finds that heavy use of platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram leads to isolation among young adults.

In the study Brian Primack and his team interviewed 1,787 U.S. adults aged 19 to 32 about their use of social media platforms. Surprisingly, people that spend more time on social media feel lonelier than others.

Tom Kerstinga psychotherapist(心理治疗师),said “Although people think being on social media all the time makes them connected to others, they are actually disconnected, because the more time one spends behind a screen, the less time one spends face-to-face.”Kersting continued. “They are spending a lot of time looking at everyone else's posts, where they are, where they are going and what they are doing. The constant connection to others' perfect life experiences causes feelings of being left out, and of being lonely.”

So what's the answer? “It's simple,” says Kersting, “All you need to do is to have a strong will. The solution to this is to refuse the addiction to looking at everyone else's life. Just focus on your own life, where you're going, what you are grateful for, and what you want to achieve in this world. Then go out and do it, and stop wasting so much time comparing.”

    32. What can be known about young adults in Paragraph 1?

A.They feel forgotten by their friends.

    B.They lack face-to-face communication.

C.They depend too much on social media for learning.

D.They can't keep up with the development of technology.

33.What does the underlined word “isolation” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Addiction.   B.Loneliness.  C.Satisfaction.  D.Sadness.

34.What can be done to prevent people feeling left out and lonely?

    A. Learn to improve one's social ability.

B.Share one's own perfect life with friends.

C.Cut down the time spent on social activities.

    D. Concentrate on one's own life rather than others'.

35.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Social Media May Not be so Social

B.Others' Perfect Life May Not be Perfect

    C.Face-to-Face Communication Comes First

D.Our Life Will be Destroyed by Social Media

    Catch obvious grammar mistakes.

If you have a good eye for mistakes, you can find many grammar “exceptions” songwriters usually use. Sometimes singers need to adapt the lyrics to the rhythm of the song. Therefore, they may be creative enough to use grammatical mistakes on purpose. It’s not funny when you catch them. 39

40 Music can also increase your cultural understanding. Many songs talk about great stories and can teach you a lot about love, life, tradition, history, philosophy, literature, and more. You can find many great examples of a storytelling song on the Internet.

In the summer of last year, they paid a visit to Stone Mountain Park with their grandpa. They had the opportunity to spend the day with their grandpa, seeing the various beautiful sights and attractions. One thing that all of them had really desired to do was to climb to the top of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn't a very high mountain and fortunately there are some walking routes (线路)to the top of itbut for the two teenagers along with a rather old grandpa it’s a difficult task.

Daniel and Lucas were much more interested in the walk than their grandpa, and they regarded it as an exciting adventure. But climbing the mountain was a rather big challenge for Tony, who was old and thin. He decided to start the slow walk up to the mountain. It seemed that Tony was taking a long time to climb just a short distance, but considering his personal safety, he had to remind himself that it took him two steps to equal his grandsons' one step. When he walked closer to his grandsons, he had to stop for a while to regain energy, and then tried to catch up with them over and over again.

Tony was very tired. He just wanted to arrive at the top of the mountain as soon as possible to enjoy the beauty of the mountaintop. But the twin grandsons were not focused at all on the challenge of climbing the mountain. And they were simply enjoying the journey of the walk. They enjoyed all that they had seen and heard along the way up to the top of the mountain. They stopped now and then to look at every large rock and observe every kind of plant. Suddenly, they found a strange plant. Daniel called out,  “Grandpa, here is a special plant. Come and have a look.”

Tony was hurrying towards his grandsons when he fell down. He looked down and saw his foot caught on a tree root. He tried to stand up but failed. Daniel and Lucas waited for some time and then looked back, only to find their grandpa struggling to stand on his feet. They put aside their curiosity, running quickly towards their grandpa. Daniel kept comforting him nervously. Meanwhile, Lucas tore off the root and examined Tony’s feet. There were no wounds but Tony was unable to walk.

Daniel and Lucas wondered how to get their grandpa to the top of the mountain. Facing the sudden problem, they responded positively. Lucas, who knew the first-aid knowledge, treated Tony’s feet. Then, seeing their Grandpa really wanted to reach the top, he said happily, “Why don’t we take turns carrying our grandpa to the top of the mountain?” Daniel said OK immediately. In this way, they finally enjoyed the great scenery on the mountain top.

    Text 1

W: Have you seen a cat near here?

M: I saw three — a black one, a red one and a white one. Which is yours?

W: The black and the red one belong to my neighbor. The other is mine.

    Text 2

W: You’re late. What happened? I hope you didn’t get into trouble at school.

M: No. I got off the bus and then realized I’d left my bag on the seat. My friend took it to his house, so I had to go and collect it.

    Text 3

M: What is that mark on your arm? Did you get touched by an insect?

W: No, I was holding my sister’s baby and he bit me. He’s like a little dog chewing on everything.

    Text 4

W: Your ticket says your train leaves from Penn Station, not Grand Central Station. If you take a taxi there, you might make it on time!

M: Oh, no. Thanks, I’ll try. I only have 30 minutes left!

    Text 5

W: We had a great meal at the new place on High Street. The one across the road does good food as well.

M: Have you tried the Indian restaurant in the town center? I’ve heard good reports about it.

    Text 6

M: Hey lady, I just cleaned that floor. Look at all your foot prints.

W: Oh no, I do apologize.

M: There is a big sign outside saying “Not Available”. Didn’t you see it?

    W: I didn’t. Please forgive me.

M: Oh, it’s OK. I’ll do it again.

W: I tell my kids off when they do that at home — and now here I am doing the same thing.

M: Don’t worry about it. The boss will just think I’m working slowly. It’s not a big deal.

    Text 7

M: I’ve seen you sitting in this park over the last couple of months, but I’ve never said hello. I’m Tom.

W: Hello, my dear. Nice to meet you. I’m here a lot. At my age, I can’t do much besides siting in the park.

M: Do your friends or family live nearby?

W: Most friends passed away years ago. I see my family sometimes, but they moved out of the city.

M: Well, I own a restaurant around here. Please, come by and order anything you want.

W: Sounds lovely, but is it expensive?

M: Oh, please! It’s on me.

    Text 8

W: Oh, what a day! The hospital was so busy. No sooner had the doctors seen one patient than they had to see another.

M: You need to sit down and relax.

W: I think I might go straight to bed. What time is it?

    M: 8:00 p.m.

W: That means I started work 14 hours ago. No wonder I’m tired. The other nurses are the same.

M: Why was it so busy?

W: The emergency teams kept bringing more people in. I’ve never seen anything like that.

    M: Was there an accident?

W: No, it was just one of those days.

    Text 9

M: Have you ever been to this concert hall before?

W: No, this is my first time.

M: The sound is amazing. They designed it, so you have a great audio experience no matter where you sit.

W: Usually I only see live music at clubs.

M: I used to go to big concerts at the sports center, but it’s just too big, the sound doesn’t travel well.

W: I agree. I think people go to them mainly for the comfortable environment.

M: True. It can be electric, but it would take a lot of effort to get to.

W: How did you get these tickets anyway? I thought they had been sold out.

M: They had, but my sister is in the orchestra. She plays the violin.

W: Well, tell her thanks for me. Do you play any instruments?

M: No. I tried to learn guitar, but I’m not gifted like my sister. How about you?

    W: I play the piano.

    Text 10

W: Good evening, and welcome to the Channel 5 weather report. This weekend we expect to see stormy weather throughout the northeast region. Along the coast, there will be strong winds and heavy rain starting Friday. For those living further inland, away from the ocean, it will be less windy, but it will still be a very wet weekend. If you live in or near the mountains, stay warm and get ready for the heavy snow! Icy roads and snow will make it dangerous to go out or travel on Saturday, so it’ll be best to do indoor activities at home. Local officials are warning of possible power cut throughout the entire region. We at Channel 5 encourage everyone to keep a flashlight and spare batteries at home in case there’s no electricity. We also want to remind you to keep your mobile phones and battery packs fully charged. Fortunately, this storm system should pass quickly, and you can look forward to sunny skies starting Tuesday.
