Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time? You can do all three with the Global Development Association (GDA).

Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you create positive changes in poor and remote communities.

We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programs. We have such roles as project managers and communication officers.

Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.

Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.

This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programs:

My grandmother was from a town in Michigan Summer after summer, I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond(关系)with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwicbes and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts(被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble(顶针)she would use while doing her needle work.

A few years ago when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell(告别 to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st a birthday.

I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorfully pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow(枕头). It was small and hard.I move it to the seam (接缝)that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing ()it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I’ve collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online, whether reading news, social media, or e-books. While online reading opens up a lot of knowledge to people there are some disadvantages, too. These include tiredness of eyes, headaches, as well as difficulty in even finishing reading the text. Now anew pioneering (开创性的) reading plugin (插件) has been intended to help people overcome these problems and read faster online.

The reading plugin called Bionic Reading, which was developed by Swiss designer Renato Casutt, was created with the belief that your brain can read faster than your eyes. The plugin makes the first few letters of each word in bold (粗体) which actually allows your eyes to jump over parts of the text and your brain to fill in what is missing. Incredibly, reading like this feels like finally unlocking 100 percent of people’s brain.

Casutt came up with the plugin by accident. He was reading a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it faster and well master it if he separated it into parts. He has worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to perfect it. Maybe people who want to strengthen their reading ability show interest in it, but more research is needed before it can be finally shown that the system improves reading ability. But people with dyslexia (诵读障碍) have proved that Bionic Reading did help them focus on what they are reading.

Casutt’s goal is to combine the plugin with all reading apps and online services. “In a digital world controlled by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in-depth reading and understanding of written content,” he said. Bionic Reading is available in several apps like Fiery Feeds, Lie, and Next App. The best way to Know if it helps you read better online is to try it yourself and find out what it is all about.

    46. How does Bionic Reading work?

    A. Users can read faster with less thinking.

    B. Users keep their brains much less active.

    C. Users keep an eye on part of the whole text

    D. Users guess the meanings of some key words.

    47. Bionic Reading was designed based on the idea that      .

    A. your eyes can read faster than your brain

    B. your brain can read faster than your eyes

    C. reading can unlock people’s brain

    D. the first few letters of each word can be made in bold

    48. What benefit does Bionic Reading bring to people with dyslexia?

    A. Selecting suitable reading contents.

    B. Keeping up with reading contents.

    C. Limiting reading time.

    D. Reducing stress from reading.

    49. What can we learn about Bionic Reading?

    A. It has not been put into use so far.

    B. It has already been fully developed.

    C. It leaves users a further reading and thinking.

    D. It helps users skip the new words in reading.

    50. Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A. New Pioneering Plugin Improves Online Reading

    B. Online Reading Is Sure To Perfect People’s Brain

    C. Spending Time On Online Reading Is Worthwhile

    D. New Pioneering Plugin Still Needs To Be Improved

“I like to see people of all races, the Chinese, the Malays and the Indians, especially little children, enjoying themselves in the park. I don’t know how long I will do this as I grow old. As long as I can do what I like, I’d like to continue.” This is what Mr Lee told a news reporter when he was asked about volunteering to keep the park a clean place.

Lee Kim Siew is an 84-year-old retiree who has devoted five years of his life to cleaning up the park near his house. He works three hours every day with a plastic bag in his hand, walking back and forth around the large park. He stops every time he spots rubbish, picking it up and putting it into the plastic bag. Mr Lee is a familiar sight to those who visit the park regularly. They give a smile to the old gentleman and sometimes have a brief chat with him before leaving there.

“When I first came here, I was shocked to find rubbish was thrown everywhere. It was so smelly,” explains Mr Lee. Cigarette ends, bottles and wrappers are what he always finds. At times, he even. digs a drain(下水道)with his hands to allow the water to flow from the pathways. Other times, he devotedly picks up the fallen branches and dried leaves to ensure the park is entirely clean.

It seems that his old age doesn’t deter him from doing the cleaning, although Mr Lee says his age affects his movement When he first started doing the cleaning, he came to the park six times every week. Now he only does that four to five times weekly.

The old man has also donated (捐赠)more than 67,00 used books to schools in local and neighboring regions. He hopes that his efforts can help people change their bad habit of throwing things carelessly.
