The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? One day, a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door found that he only had one dime left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness. “ He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart. “ As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in kindness and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists can be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. I’d been invited to join a group of people who took water and breakfast to a local park where day laborers gathered, hoping to be chosen for work. My friend Kim and I spoke with a Mexican man in his forties named Natal, wearing a T-shirt and faded jeans. Next to him, on the low wall where he sat, rested a large backpack and a bedroll.
We had a wonderful conversation, ranging from the difficulty of finding work to artwork, from Santa Fe history to Natal’s “beautiful home,” as he described it. Natal told us of his travels in search of work. He had traveled all over the U.S. and Canada, taking jobs where he found them, meeting people, and seeing the sights. He told us he’d especially loved Oregon.
He was filled with praise, too, for the beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains outside Santa Fe and for all the history in the town. We agreed that the area was extremely beautiful. He grinned and told us it was important to appreciate beauty. Then, he invited us to visit him in his home in the mountains. He wanted to show us the beauty of the trees and have us smell the freshness in the mountains. He wanted to be a good host.
We continued to talk and it became clear that Natal’s “home” was a clearing under the trees. His bed was the bedroll he carried with him, spread on the ground under the starlight. He loved it there and wanted to share it with us. We declined, telling him that we were honored by the invitation, but that our classes would keep us too busy to make the trip.
Natal’s love of his “home” was in sharp contrast to my complaint about the water in my pipes not heating up fast enough, about my bedroom ceiling being too low, about not having central air conditioning, about my lack of a fenced yard. How annoying I was! If I was amazed by his appreciation for everything he had, I was completely floored (击倒) by what happened next.

Yesterday I was leaving a restaurant when I saw a homeless man having a hot dog, just sitting on the ground. He had a soda with him, too. He was eating that hot dog as if he hadn’t eaten for months and the scene just broke my heart.
I was afraid that I didn’t have extra money at that time to buy him more food. I said to myself the next time I had money and I saw the man, I would buy him food.
Recently, I had done part-time jobs all day so I had some extra money. But I thought of going to Walmart to buy the water drinking fountain (饮水机) for my cat, which cost a lot. I ended up with just $5 left on my card and I had $2 cash. Suddenly, I found I forgot to buy a gallon of water for the new cat water drinking fountain. I didn’t return to Walmart. Somehow, I went to the same restaurant to buy the gallon of water instead.
I came out of the restaurant and there was that man again and he was going to sit down on the ground again. All he had was a drink. I kept saying to him, “Hi, sir, let’s go inside and I’ll pay for you.”
The other day, on my app for shopping, it had a buy-one-get-one free slice of pizza and I told him. His face beamed with happiness, “Oh, I would like to have that!” The coupon (优惠券) was out of date, but I still had enough money so I bought him two slices of pizza. When I asked him if he would like a cup of ice cream, he said sure.

On February 4, while working on a construction site in Gratiot County, Michigan, Hansen heard terrified screams coming from nearby. He stopped his work and looked up. Standing on the back porch(门廊) of the home next door was a little boy yelling “Help!” while four fierce dogs barked madly in a circle below him.
At first, Hansen thought it was just a dog fight. Then alarm bells went off in his head. “The noises they made sounded like what dogs do when they’re killing something,” he says. His thought proved right when another young boy suddenly popped up in the middle of the dogs, and Hansen watched in horror as they sank in their teeth and threw him across the grass like a small doll.
“He was shirtless and covered in blood, and those dogs were trying to kill him.” says Hansen.
Hansen raced across the grass, jumped the fence, and landed in the neighbor’s yard. He shouted at the dogs, but they ignored him. Then he displayed the most aggression that he could manage, yelling louder until they let go just long enough for Hansen to catch eight-year-old Ethan Nokes around the stomach and bear-hug him. “I couldn’t hold him under his armpits(腋窝), which would have made it easier to run, because they were torn wide open,” says Hansen.
As Hansen dashed across the yard, the dogs bounced on him, biting at Ethan. Hansen rushed onto the steps. So did the dogs. When he reached the top, he pulled on a door; it wouldn’t open. “A dog grabbed Ethan’s foot, and I thought they were going to get him back from me,” he says.

It was 1st January, the first day of the year and a holiday for me. What luck! I started by thinking of getting the bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, paid little attention to my polite “Happy New Year” as usual. He nodded and I sat in front of him.
    Minutes passed and nothing happened.
Then very hesitantly I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register. After a few minutes, he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers.
After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered (说) the words, I felt as if a bomb had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!”
Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt how this man must be feeling, when customers like me came always in a hurry to get their work done.
He had been working at this counter for God-knows-how-many years. We do not even feel the need to thank him for being there. He must be feeling so annoyed that “here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first.”
On an instinct (本能) I told him, “Sir, you please have your tea, I am not in a hurry.” This man, who I had been seeing for the last few years, suddenly looked up at me and for the first time we had eye contact—he had never made eye contact earlier. I saw a different person there, another human being who was as hard-pressed for time as I always am.

    “Ada! Milk!” Mama called.
Milk. It was Ada’s turn to get it. Ada sighed and shut her first-aid book. Her head hurt from reading in the dim morning light, but how else was she going to learn?
Ada tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Ada heard Betty drive off hours ago. “She should have taken me with her. She thinks I’m too young, but she’s wrong. I am already 16!” Ada thought.
Ada carried the milk back to Mama, then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, had gotten a donkey, and some kids had gathered around to see it. Roy was always doing something to get attention. Like now: he was trying to stand on the animal’s bare back.
“No wonder they don’t trust kids with anything important”, Ada thought, sighing. She had just turned away when she heard a thud and a few screams. Roy lay on the ground nearby moaning in pain. The donkey stood several meters away. “Roy!” The kids nearby ran towards him. “Get Betty,” one said. Ada shook her head. “Betty’s gone to the city.” The other kids seemed frozen in place.
Ada ran to where Roy was lying. She dropped to her knees on the dusty road. “Roy! Can you hear me?” Roy moaned in agony. Ada saw that one of his legs was crooked, bent a little sideways between the knee and the ankle. A broken leg!
She remembered what the first-aid book had said about broken legs: if there is no ambulance, straighten the bone before moving the victim. There certainly wouldn’t be any ambulance here. Ada looked back up the road. The other kids were still standing there, watching. “Victor!” Ada called to one of the boys. “Go get Roy’s mama, and find someone with a truck.” She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with.”

1.When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. I have always hated socks and it was a warm June day, so I was wearing no socks. In the midst of conversation, Natal noticed that I had no socks on my feet. He pointed and asked if I needed socks. I looked at my feet as though they had just grown there. He commented that I wasn’t wearing socks and that I must need socks. Without hesitation, he opened his backpack, pulled out a package of socks, and showed me. I quickly told him that, no, no, I didn’t need socks.
He thought I felt his socks weren’t good enough for me. He wanted me to know they had never been worn by anyone. Brand-new! Good enough! I told him I was honored he would give me his socks but that I truly disliked wearing socks. He accepted that I wasn’t disturbed by the idea of wearing his socks; I just didn’t want any socks at all. Paragraph 2:
With the house quiet, he went to check on Ethan in the bedroom. Rescue arrived soon after, and Ethan was airlifted to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for the more than 30 bite wounds he’d suffered from head to toe. Hansen, meanwhile, walked away with scratches on his legs and forehead. After two months, Ethan was fully recovered. Ethan pays frequent visits to Hansen, and he and his brother once even came and stayed overnight. Clearly, Hansen has become more than his savior.

7.I saw both of us sailing in the same boat. I felt that he was also missing the small things in life like a hot cup of tea or lying in a warm bed for a few more minutes like me. He gave me a rare smile and said, “It is an everyday affair with me; you are not in a hurry but somebody else will be.”
He really touched my heart with his wise words. I felt that all this time I thought of him as a someone who was there for my convenience, but today I suddenly felt a strange communion with him vowing to be friendly with people who help me with my work and be thankful that they are there for me.

8.Ada then found a strong stick, which she would use to keep his leg straight. She gently explained what she was going to do then carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy’s leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. “I know it hurts,” Ada said softly. “But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.” When Ada was done, she looked up and saw Roy’s mama watching from a few meters away. Behind her was a neighbor in a pickup truck. When Ada stepped away, Roy’s mama ran over and held Roy’s face in her hands. “Thank you, Ada,” she said. Ada helped them lift Roy into the truck, then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.
The next day, Betty came to Ada’s home. “I heard what you did,” Betty said. “You kept your head in an emergency. That’s an important skill.” Ada’s face turned red. “I was afraid ...” Betty shook her head. “It’s OK for a nurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors are coming tomorrow with vaccines. We need some more hands. Can you help?” “I’d love to.” Ada replied at once. “Come early, then. There is a lot to learn.” Ada smiled. “I’ll bring my first-aid book.”
文章结构合理,思路清晰,使用了恰当的连接词及词组使行文连贯,如“which, until, when”,也运用了一些高级词汇和表达,如“gently;towards;emergency;afraid;reply;step”以及状语从句“But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.”“When Ada stepped away, Roy’s mama ran over and held Roy’s face in her hands.”等,增加了文章的亮点,体现了学生较高的英语学科素养。
