Perhaps my favorite place during my trip to Guangxi was the Longji Rice Terraces in Longsheng. I’ve seen rice terraces elsewhere in Asia, but nothing compared with the beauty of the Longji Rice Terraces. To go to Guangxi and skip (略过) these rice terraces would be a loss.

These over 600-year-old terraces are still very much in use and feed the local Yao and Zhuang communities. You can find many guesthouses throughout the various rice terraces, and while accommodations (住宿) are very basic, I would strongly suggest spending a night in the peaceful terraces, surrounded by nothing but rice.

My friends and I had arrived in Guangxi on harvest (收获) day and we were told by our local guide it was too late to see Longji in its autumnal beauty. But we were super lucky because the 2017 harvest had been delayed (推迟), and when we arrived in Longsheng a couple of days later, it was the last day before the harvest began. It’s quite risky to time your visit this way, but it is amazing to see the Longji Rice Terraces both before harvest and after, when it takes on a completely new character.

The two main terraced areas are the Ping’an Terraced Fields and the Jinkeng Terraced Fields. The former is home to the local Zhuang people and has more visitors as it’s easier to reach. Jinkeng, on the other hand, is less visited. The Red Yao people live here, and should you need a hand with your suitcase, their women are happy to help you. We chose Jinkeng because it’s home to the highest point of the Longji Rice Terraces. The viewpoint (视角) is nearly 4, 000 feet high. We had to go up there as our hotel was up there, but you should anyway as it’s the most wonderful viewpoint.

The Longji Rice Terraces are supposed to be beautiful in the spring and summer as well, though I much prefer its autumnal beauty. Winter, I’d skip, as it was already cold enough at night in October, but I’d return and visit again in the spring or summer.

    34. What purpose does the first paragraph serve?

    A. To provide an interesting example.

    B. To bring up the topic.

    C. To discuss the reasons of the Longji Rice Terraces’ popularity.

D To provide ways to visit Longji Rice Terraces.

    35. What is the author’s advice for people visiting the Longji Rice Terraces?

    A. Staying a night at a guesthouse among the terraces.

    B. Going to the local Yao and Zhuang communities.

    C. Choosing good accommodations.

    D. Eating the local rice.

    36. Why did the author feel very lucky when he arrived in Longsheng?

    A. He could admire the terraces’ autumnal beauty.

    B. He found a time-saving way to the terraces.

    C. He came across one of his friends.

    D. He had a professional local guide.

    37. What made the author choose the Jinkeng Terraced Fields?

    A. The affordable hotel.

    B. The friendly people.

    C. The great viewpoint.

    D. The light traffic.

    C

For this Spring Festival Eve, Tiffany Chen is trying something untraditional and ordering a meal for her family get-together. She used Eleme, a food delivery service app, and searched “Spring Festival family dinner”.

“I actually found quite a few results! It is unbelievable because this is a real thing now,” Chen said.

The ease of ordering takeaway food is one of many ways technology is changing how Chinese people celebrate Spring Festival, and this change has been embraced by all generations.

In Shenzhen North Railway Station a week before Spring Festival, a father hurried to catch a train. Yan Jianlong is from Changsha, in Hunan Province. This year, instead of local food or other specialties as gifts, he wanted to buy something high-tech for his 10-year-old son. “I heard he likes this kind of present now,” Yan said. Others are in the same condition. Chen Zhiyang, who works at a shop, said robotic toys such as dogs and drones (无人机) were the most popular of all his merchandise (商品) during Spring Festival.

Beijing resident Wang Xiaoya said she would visit a friend in Brazil this year, and she could do so without feeling she had neglected (怠慢) her family as she would chat online to her mother and grandparents during the holidays.

This technology is not an activity that only belongs to the young --- Wang’s grandmother has learned how to use smartphones. “It has really made it more convenient for her and she really likes using smartphones, ” Wang said.

There have been questions on social media about whether technology has changed the atmosphere (氛围) at Spring Festival and whether it meant people have become lazy.

“I think what technology has changed are only formalities (礼节),” Wang said. “It does not matter how you celebrate Spring Festival, whether you are eating in, eating out, or ordering--- the most valuable thing is who you celebrate it with.”

    38. What did Tiffany Chen do for this year’s Spring Festival Eve?

    A. She ordered a takeout family meal.

    B. She cooked a special dish for her parents.

    C. She helped her parents prepare the family dinner.

    D. She booked a table at her favorite restaurant online.

    39. What did the goods sold in Chen Zhiyang’s shop show?

    A. Giving gifts is an important tradition during Spring Festival.

    B. High-tech gifts are getting popular during Spring Festival.

    C. Local food is wildly accepted during Spring Festival.

    D. Kids are excited about celebrating Spring Festival.

    40. What is the attitude of Wang Xiaoya’s grandmother to smartphones?

    A. Unclear.

    B. Doubtful.

    C. Supportive.

    D. Uninterested.

    41. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A. New technology is making Chinese Spring Festival famous worldwide

    B. Experience different ways of celebrating Spring Festival in China

    C. More new technologies are needed in Spring Festival celebrations

    D. Technology is changing Spring Festival celebrations in China

    D

Handwritten Chinese characters (文字) can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction (吸引力). In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.

Living as we do in a digital era (数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese? When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input (语音输 ) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. Since we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between characters in detail; the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand at all?

I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that you can say. But unless you don’t care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without it, it will be very hard to understand characters. You dont need to be a calligraphy master (书法大师), but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.

I think learning the most common 500 characters or so is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1, 000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1, 000 most common on a need-to-know basis.

    42. What does the author think of Chinese characters?

    A. They are less communicative than English words.

    B. They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese.

    C. They show the greatness of Chinese culture.

    D. They are not really that difficult.

    43. What can we infer about characters in paragraph 2?

    A. Characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.

    B. People believe learning to write characters is important.

    C. People doubt the necessity of learning to write characters.

    D. Characters may disappear with the development of society.

    44. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. Understanding characters.

    B. Being a calligraphy master.

    C. Keeping a good learning habit.

    D. Learning basic handwriting skills.

    45. What would be the best title for the text?

    A. Is it necessary to learn to write Chinese characters by hand?

    B. When was the last time you wrote something by hand?

    C. What rules are there for handwriting?

    D. How to write Chinese characters on a computer?

    注意事项: 1.请用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卷上。

    阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

It was 3: 34 in the morning. Suddenly the bed moved a little. I woke up. That bed used to move a lot so I just thought it was my wife rolling ()over. I looked over to her and she was fast asleep. So I thought it was just another small tremor (轻微地震). We used to get many small tremors in Chile. But then everything in the room started making noise. The tremor got a bit stronger. My wife woke up.

I went to open the front door to make sure it wouldn’t get stuck while my wife went to see how the kids were. They were still fast asleep.

I got to the front door and left it open. When I turned around to go back to the bedroom, the full force of the earthquake started to hit. I couldn’t move forward. While I was trying to hold myself up against the wall, I looked out the window. It was frightening, some buildings coming in and out of view and some already falling down. Then the earthquake made a strong push and our lights went out. In the darkness, I thought, “This is it! We’re not coming out of this alive. ”

Luckily, the violent(剧烈的)shaking gradually slowed down and then stopped. I could finally walk to our children’s room. My wife had been standing over them during the strongest part of the earthquake, making sure nothing fell on them.

After such a big earthquake, we expected the “smaller” aftershocks to be still very strong. There was still a chance that the building could collapse. So we woke the kids up, got some basic things and started to walk down the emergency(紧急情况)stairs. . . all 22 floors of them.

When we finally arrived at the ground floor many other people had already arrived, some in pajamas (睡衣), some half-dressed. The good news was everyone got out of the building safe and sound.

    46. What woke the author up? (no more than 10 words)

    _______________________________________________

    47. When did the earthquake get really strong? (no more than 10 words)

    48. What happened when the author looked out the window? (no more than 15 words)

49 What does the underlined word in Paragraph 5 probably mean? (no more than 3 words)
