By my mid-20s, I'd finished my master in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as ahealth researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning morethan most of my friendsliving the city lifegoing out at weekends. I had a good pension(养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry.I was really unhappy.

I wanted to get back to feeling passionate about something so I started thinking about thethings I used to love. As a child, I'd always been involved in the outdoors, and I used to lovehiking but all that had stopped after secondary school.I decided to volunteer with a local youthgroup and within a month, I'd gone camping with them. I absolutely loved it. It was likes witching on a lightbulb. This was what I'd been missing.

I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I wasworking my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I lovedconnecting with nature, connecting with other people.

In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier-Ihad to havemy keys,my phone,my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions.Evidence ismounting to show that plants can, too.A paper publishic ein the journal Trends in Plant Sciencedetails how plants are rapidly adapting to the efrects of climate change, and how they are passingdown these adaptations to their offspring(后代).

Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For cxample, climate change ismaking winters shorter in many locations, and plants are responding.“Many plants require aminimum period of cold in order to set up their environmental clock to define their floweringtime,"says Martinelli,a plant geneticist at the University of Florence."As cold scasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These mechanismsallow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunitics to reproduce.”

Because plants dont have neural(神经的)networkstheir memory is based entirely oncellular(细胞的),molecular(分子的),and biochemical networks. These networks make upwhat the researchers call somatic memory(体细胞记忆).“It allows plants to recognize theoccurrence of a previous environmental condition and to react accordingly," says Martinelli.

These somatic memories can then be passed to the plantsoffspring via epigenetics(表现遗传).“Several examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plantmemory to environmental stresses and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses,"says Martinelli.

Going forward, Martinelli hopes to understand even more about the genes that are beingpassed down. “We are particularly interested in decoding the epigenetic alphabet withoutchanges in DNA sequence(序列),”he says. “This is especially important when we consider therapid climate change we observe today that every living organism, including plants, needs toquickly adapt to survive."

28.What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons?

A.They have shortened their flowering time.

B.They have got more chances to reproduce.

C.They have avoided flowering in cold seasons.

D.They have adjusted their environmental clock.

29.What can we learn about somatic memory?

A.It is entirely based on neural networks.

    B. It can help the plants' offspring to survive.

    C. It can help relieve environmental stresses.

    D. It disturbs the plants' biochemical networks.

30.What does the underlined word “modlating" mean in paragraph 4?

This in March, I jumped into a heated pool in Califomia to meet a dolphin namedDelle As  in a   e oards me and became iasa ereine e eeashin me ir a e e elieied reached out to pat her shiny skin. It fel rubbery, whichWas the main giveaway that Delle the dolphin was a robot.

Just as fake(假的)animals are becoming very realisticits becoming increasingly lessacccptable to use live animals for entertainment purposes. Documentarics like Blackfish (2013)and The Cove (2009) have exposed some of the horrific treatment and suffering of occanmammals. The resulting public protest has made aquariums(水族馆)controversialattractingless visitors.

Arguablyentertaining people with captive(圈养的)animals is vital for animalconservation. Many zoos and aquariums actively try to promote conservation efforts byproviding educational experiences and encouraging interest in the natural world. This type ofentertainment is useful, because it inspires people to care.

At first, this seems like a reason to avoid replacing the animals with technology. However, research in the rapid-developed field of human-robot interaction is showing astonishing resultson engagement with robots that can imitate lifelike behaviour. When physically interactive, robots attract a lot of attention. People tend to treat them like they're alive, even though theyknow perfectly well they're just machines.

If we start to replace the animals in our theme parks with machines, will this trend decreaseour wonder for the natural worldA bunch of people expressed negative gut reactions(本能反应)after I posted video of the robot dolphin on Twitter. And yet, I don't believe that using this robotanimals will cause us to forget the worth of living creatures.

    32. Why does the author mention Delle in paragraph 1?

    A. To share a special experience.

    B.To promote rubbery dolphins.

    C. To draw attention to robot animals.

    D. To describe a dolphin preformance.

    33. What can we learn about live animals in zoos?

    A.They are cruelly treated.

    B.They make zoos popular.

    C.They are well entertained.

    D.They deserve conservation.

34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Reasons for replacing animals with robots.

B.Benefits of entertaining people with robots.

C.Research results on interaction with robots.

D.Public concerns over engagement with robots.

35.What's the author's attitude to replacing animals with machines?

    A. Favorable.

    B. Intolerant.

    C.Doubtful.

    D. Unclear.

Since youcan choose what type of workout you'd prefer to do, it means that you can exercise wheneveryou please.

40 Now that you know all about micro workouts, you can add them to your day.Get as creative as you please and think about the types of movements that suit you. You neverknow-it might just boost your health and wellness.

Sista raced ahead, the sea breeze streaming against her face. Rafi finally caught up and thenthey rested in the shade.

I'm hungry. I know where there's a great apple tree.”Sista said,“It belongs to an oldlady called Susan who lives in the little house by the hill. I heard she's stubborn, but thatsometimes she gives fruit in return for an errand(跑腿).”

“Let's go,” Rafi said. They crossed a stream by hopping from rock to rock. Finally, upon ahilltop, they saw a splendid apple tree with bright red fruits.

A small farmhouse stood at the bottom of the hill. Rafi's heart pounded as Sista knocked onthe door. An elderly woman answered.

“Yes?” the lady asked, staring at the girls.

“We heard ..." said Sista, her voice shaky, “that we could run an errand for you in exchangefor apples."

Susan raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes.  ” She clicked her tongue. “Nothing is free, eh?”

She led the girls into the kitchen. When passing the living room, Sista found that the wallwas decorated with colourful crayon drawings, which seem to be children's. She wondered whodrew these since Susan was alone, with no grandchildren, even no families or relatives. The ladygrabbed two baskets, one large and one small, and pushed them into the girls hands. “Go fillthese with apples. Come right back.”

The girls raced up the hill to the tree, climbed the branches, and picked the ripest apples. After filling the baskets, they returned to the house.

Susan filled a bag with rice and dried beans, and then she handed it to Sista.“Take this bagand the large basket of apples to the Gomez family. Do you know them?”

The girls nodded. Sista had heard that Mr. Gomez has been sick in bed for a long time andMrs.Gomez has to raise three little kids.

After Susan finished, she joined the girls again. “Andhere's your payment,” she said, handing the small basket of apples to the girls. As they walked home, Rafi andSista enjoyed their treat. The juice was as sweet and warm as the feeling they had inside.

M:We can't afford to give you a lot of money because we don't have high-paying jobs, but you must always knowthat your mother and I are very caring when it comes to helping you.

W:I know-and that is what I like about you.

    Text 2

W:Pardon me, what is the price of this keyboard? Is it on sale?

M: It is usually fifty dollars, but it is twenty percent off until the 15th of this month.

    Text 3

W:I have to go to the doctor's office right after school. If you want to go to the beach when I'm done,we canmeet up there later.

M:I have to go to dinner with my parents later.Sorry.

    Text 4

M:What are you going to order?I'm thinking of getting the noodles.

W:Why not try something else? Their Italian dishes are good. For myself,I haven't decided.

M: I had one of those yesterday. Let's split a medium pizza and a large salad then.

    Text 5

M:Can you tell me the meaning of“piece of cake”?What about “easy as pie”?

W:Neither is about dessert. They are similar in meaning to “no problem”.

M:Well, have you ever made a pie? There is nothing easy about it.

    Text 6

M:What will you do while you're in Rome?

W:I'd like to visit the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain.

    M:Anything else?

W:Well, also that tower that leans to the side.

M:You mean the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

    W:Yes.

M:Well, that isn't in Rome. It's in a city called Pisa. If you're going to travel anywhere outside of Rome,Isuggest Venice instead. You'd like it a lot because you can travel around in boats there.

W:I'm only in the country for a week, though. Would I have time to get to Venice?

M: I think you could spend two days in Venice and the rest in Rome.

    W:Great! I'll do that.

    Text 7

M:When will you be finished with your work?

W:Give me another hour, please. I just have to write an environmental report before tomorrow.

M: That's fine. Our dinner reservation isn't until 8:00. It's only 5:45 now. We can leave the apartment at 7:15.Is that enough time for you to get yourself ready?

W: Yes,definitely.I don't want to keep your parents waiting, either, so I'll try to hurry up.

M:Don't worry. They can order snacks and drinks if we're a bit late.

W:I don't want to make them upset.

M:They understand how important it is to work. They'll be impressed with your commitment. They'll also berelieved that at least one of us is earning money, since my book hasn't found a publisher yet!

W:Ha-ha! OK, Mike. Let me get this done. I can't concentrate when you're joking around.

    Text 8

W:How was your trip back home,Michael?

M:It was good. It was fun, and it was...a bit strange, also.

W:What do you mean? I thought you were born in Germany.

M:Actually,I was born in France. My family moved to Germany when I was five, so that's whyI call it home.

W:I see.So what was so strange about it?

M: It's hard to explain. I mean, I've only been living here in England for a few years, but I didn't realize howlong it's actually been until I saw all my old friends.

    W:Were they different?

M:No,it was me who was different. I expected it to feel like I had never left, but everything felt so unfamiliarto me...like...what is that saying?

W:Like a fish out of water?

M: That's it. Anyway, I promised to stay more in touch with my friends and learn about their lives.

W:Do you think you will ever go back there to work?

M: I don't think so. England is my home now.

    Text 9

M:Our biology test is going to be so hard. I failed last week's test and I'm so afraid of doing the same for thisone. I'm going to have to study for hours this week! I'll never make it to basketball practice.

W: But my soccer team just made it to the final game. I need to practice! If I don't practice, I could be thereason we don't win! It's like when you play baseball in the spring, (15) you guys are always winning andyou never have time to study!

M:Yeah, we're actually really good, but I don't want to play anymore. The practice takes up too much time, and it's no longer fun. Besides, my grades are more important to me. Since you can't study after school, would you want to study together during lunch? There's an empty classroom on the first floor.

W:Why not study in the library? There are big tables we can use, and it's in the same building. Just two floorsabove.

    M:OK.

    Text 10

Good morning, students. We have an important announcement to make this morning. Mr. Jenkins, yourphysical education teacher, will be leaving us after 25 years at Evergreen High School. Together, we haveshared many great memories here, and he is a big part of our school's history. He led the boys'basketball teamto a championship the last two years and has also helped out with other sports programs. Although we are sadto see him go, we are happy for him, too. He has been a fantastic coach, a teacher, and more importantly, agood friend. He has told us that this decision has been very hard for him. However, his mother has become ill,and it is the right decision for his family. Unfortunately, Mr. Jenkins will not be able to end the year with us, as he is traveling back to his hometown this Friday. This means we won't have time for a proper goodbyecelebration, but we hope you will all visit him before he leaves. And finally,to show respect for our good friend,we will be naming the gymnasium “Jenkins'Gym” at the end of the month. Taking over his duties until summervacation will be our math teacher, Mr. Ryan. We also have a goodbye card you can sign at the office. Thank youfor your attention and have a good day.
