Human innovation (创新) has allowed people to explore space for decades. Within a space station, astronauts have enough air, food and water to complete missions of a year or longer without a resupply. But missions to further reaches of space are a different matter. Establishing a base on the moon or sending humans to Mars seems just on the horizon. That can only happen if innovative and foolproof ways are developed to supply humans with enough air, water and food.
One company, Interstellar Labs, has developed an advanced, closed loop system that can grow plants anywhere, even in space. They call their AI managed greenhouses BioPods and they are designed to be very efficient. In fact, Interstellar Labs claims that BioPods reduce the amount of land and water needed to produce food by 99 percent. That is not an impossible claim. BioPods don’t use any soil to grow plants, and the vast majority of water is recycled and recirculated.
Plants are grown inside BioPods using aeroponics, the practice of hanging plants in the air and spraying a mist of nutrient-rich water on their roots. By using aeroponics, the BioPod system carefully conserves water with amazing results. According to Interstellar labs, BioPod-grown plants are up to 300 times more productive than traditionally grown plants, using only a small amount of water.
The conditions inside of a BioPod are controlled by AI, which can change anything from the lighting to the temperature and humidity to maximize growth. This optimizes (使最优化) growing conditions no matter what the environment is outside, including the emptiness of space.
The BioPods themselves can be built in almost any environment, too. The pod’s structure is made with a 3D printer using raw materials in liquid form. The inside part is sealed with an inflatable membrane (充气膜) that is also 3D-printed. This means that a BioPod could be built right on the surface of the moon or Mars, making transporting a large structure unnecessary.
Like most technology developed for space exploration, BioPods can also be used on Earth to provide highly efficient food production systems even in the harshest environments.

At Jenner Park primary School in Wales, pupils between the ages of seven and nine are writing letters to residents of a local care home. The initiative sees children and their elderly pen pals(笔友)exchange updates about their lives, helping to build relationships between generations while also giving the children an understanding of the value of writing letters by hand—an activity that's becoming less and less common.
Laura Johnson, the teacher who coordinates(协调)the scheme at Jenner Park, says: “All of our writing is for a purpose. That's the key in getting children to value handwriting. As soon as you put an audience there, knowing that someone out there is going to be reading it—whether that's parents or another group of children—there's always the real sense of pride to go along with it,” says Johnson.
The school maintains a focus on handwriting throughout the years, from dedicated handwriting classes in the prep school to a calligraphy club offered to the older groups. It has created something called the pen license. It allows younger children to move from using a pencil to pen once they've reached a certain standard. "There's a lot of excitement about reaching that pen licence stage," says Johnson.
Johnson adds that developing students' writing in this way matters for their life after school: “For us, it's important that we create citizens of the future who have a set of life skills that can make them successful." The dominance of technology is a challenge, she admits, but she also believes both tools have their place. “Obviously we're competing with technology continuously.” she says. “And I know there are people there saying you don't need to bother about handwriting because tech is out there. But we don't see it as competing We're trying to get pupils to realize that there's a place for handwriting and to know when it's important to use each.”

Like every dog, every disease now seems to have its day. World Tuberculosis (肺结核) Day is on Saturday March 24th.
Tuberculosis was once terribly fashionable. Dying of “consumption” seems to have been a favorite activity of 19th-century artists, which has, however, been neglected of late. Researchers in the field never tire of pointing out that TB kills a lot of people. According to figures released earlier this week by the World Health Organization, 1.6 million people died of the disease in 2005, compared with about 3m for AIDS and 1m for malaria. But it receives only a fraction of the research budget devoted to AIDS. America’s National Institutes of Health, for example, spends 20 times as much on AIDS as on TB. Nevertheless, everyone seems to be getting in on the TB-day act this year.
The Global Fund, an international organization responsible for fighting all three diseases but best known for its work on AIDS, claims that its anti-TB activities since 2002 have saved the lives of over 1m people. The World Health Organization has issued a report that contains some good news. Although the number of TB cases is still rising, the rate of illness is growing only because the population itself is going up.
Even drug companies are involved. Eli Lilly announced a $50m boost to its MDRTB Global Partnership. MDR stands for multi-drug resistance, and it is one of the reasons why TB is back in the spotlight. Careless treatment has caused drug-resistant problems to evolve all over the world. The course of drugs needed to clear the disease completely takes six months, and persuading people to stay that course once their symptoms have gone is hard. Unfortunately, those infected with MDR have to be treated with less effective, more poisonous and more costly drugs.
The other reason TB is back is its relationship to AIDS. AIDS does not kill directly. Rather, HIV weakens the body’s immune system and exposes the sufferer to secondary infections. Of these, TB is one of the most serious. Some anti-TB drugs interfere with the effect of some anti-HIV drugs. Conversely, in about 20% of cases where a patient has both diseases, anti-HIV drugs make the tuberculosis worse. The upshot is that 125 years after human beings worked out what caused TB, it is still a serious threat.

M: Do you have a camera and love traveling? If so, our annual photography competition run by the Travel section of The Guardian is for you. The winners of each month's competition will also see their shots displayed in the end­of­year exhibition for the public at The Guardian's offices in London. There will be a different theme for each month. Members of The Guardian travel writing team and photographers will judge the monthly entries and the winners.
To enter you must be living in the UK from the time you submit your entry into the competition to the time you are selected as a winner. The competition is open to both amateurs and professionals.
The yearly winners chosen from the 12 monthly winners will go on an amazing four­night trip to Swedish Lapland. The host for this holiday is Fredrik Broman, who has been a nature photographer for 21 years. Fredrik will assist the winners and other participants in photographing a wide variety of winter subjects.
Included in the prize: return flights from the UK, four nights' accommodations with full board, and fully qualified wilderness guides, and instructors.
The yearly winners will be required to write a report of the trip, which will be printed in the Travel section of The Guardian at a later date. Your name will of course appear with the article and photos.
