A 27-year-old woman, Hannah Bacon will be spending most of the year walking more than 2,000 miles in the name of climate change advocacy. She is making the long-distance hike to raise awareness about climate change and support the Sunrise Movement.
On Nov. 1, Hannah Bacon started what she estimates will be a seven-month-long journey from California to Virginia Beach. Along the way, she hopes to raise money for the Sunrise Movement, an organization focused on mobilizing(动员) climate activists around the country to create a sustainable future.
Bacon, who lost her job during the COVID-19, was inspired to set foot on the journey after reading the book The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells. The book describes the ways a warming planet is affecting the Earth more than what people may realize. That’s when Bacon thought about the ways she could help the planet.
Bacon graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2015 and has since served as an ESL(English as a Second Language) instructor, a naturalist at an outdoor school, and sold vegetables at farmer’s markets, according to her website on the project, which she’s named Miles For Climate. She also helped adolescents in substance-abuse recovery, worked as an EMT(Emergency Medical Technician), and helped a nonprofit promoting zero waste in New York City.
Bacon is documenting her journey to Virginia Beach on her web page, Miles For Climate. Her most recent update on Monday showed she had already walked more than 650 miles in 46 days. As of now, Bacon is only about $8,500 short of her $20,000 fundraising goal for Sunrise Movement.
“I hope people understand there is so much more we can be doing, and climate change is here and really important,” she added, “No one is perfect but there are lifestyle changes we can all make.”
    4. What is the purpose of the long-distance hike?
    A. To encourage people to walk. B. To protect world environment.
    C. To support a climate campaign. D. To raise awareness of movement.

    A. Become a perfect person. B. Change the way they live.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Comedy on Referral has taken that idea and run with it, using stand up comedy to help treat people struggling with trauma(创伤) and anxiety in partnership with the National Health Service(NHS).
The idea came from comedian Angie Belcher’s experiences teaching comedy at Bristol University. She found that students often told her how much stronger and more resilient(有适应力的) they were thanks to stand up comedy.
Inspired, she teamed up with the NHS in Bristol to create a six-week comedy course for patients struggling with trauma in January 2022. Following the success of this initial course, Comedy on Referral won NHS funding to help men with trauma in London.
Talking to the Bristol Post, Belcher said, “Past traumas are perfect for comedy. Comedy doesn’t come from the happy, perfect moments of your life, but from our everyday struggles and major life events. People who’ve been through big life experiences such as losing a loving one and ill health often can’t wait to tell me their story, mostly because there’s always something especially funny about the situation.”
Research has shown that laughter has positive psychological effects, such as decreasing levels of cortisol — the stress hormone — and increasing endorphins(内啡肽). It can even have physiological benefits, although less research has been done in this area. Current research has linked laughter and humour with increased levels of pain tolerance as well as short-term cardiovascular benefits. More research is needed to prove these findings.
Nonetheless, the mental health benefits of regular laughter are widely accepted, and using comedy to treat mental health struggles could be a real breakthrough in the treatment of mental health.
    8. Why is the phrase mentioned in paragraph 1?
    A. To stress the importance of laughter. B. To explain the harm trauma causes.
    C. To show the effect of stand up comedy. D. To state the idea behind Comedy on Referral.
    9. How was the first six-week comedy course for patients?
    A. Ambiguous. B. Effective. C. Controversial. D. Fruitless.
    10. What may contribute to a comedy according to Belcher?
    A. Happy moments. B. Funny moments.
    C. Struggling moments. D. Successful moments.
    11. What is the text?
    A. A news report. B. A book review.
    C. A comedy story. D. A diary entry.

Dogs are capable of understanding the emotions behind an expression on a human face. The study is the latest to reveal just how connected dogs are with people. The research also provides evidence that dogs use different parts of their brains to process human emotions. By living in close contact with humans, dogs have developed specific skills that enable them to interact and communicate efficiently with people. Recent studies have shown that the dogs’ brain can pick up on emotional clues contained in a person’s voice, body smell and posture, and read their faces.
In this study, the authors watched what happened when they presented photographs of the same two adults’ faces(a man and a woman) to 26 feeding dogs. The images were placed strategically to the sides of the animals’ line of sight and the photos showed a human face ex-pressing one of the six basic human emotions: anger, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise, dis-gust or being neutral.
The dogs showed greater response and cardiac(心脏的) activity when shown photo-graphs that expressed arousing emotional states such as anger, fear and happiness. They also took longer to resume feeding after seeing these images. The dogs’ increased heart rate indicated that in these cases they experienced higher levels of stress.
In addition, dogs tended to turn their heads to the left when they saw human faces ex-pressing anger, fear or happiness. The reverse happened when the faces looked surprised, possibly because dogs view it as a non-threatening, relaxed expression. “Clearly arousing, negative emotions seem to be processed by the right side of a dog’s brain, and more positive emotions by the left side,” says Siniscalchi.
The results support that of other studies done on dogs and other mammals. These show that the right side of the brain plays a more important part in regulating the sympathetic out-flow to the heart. This is a fundamental organ for the control of the “fight or flight” Behavioral response necessary for survival.
    12. What does the new research show?
    A. People’s emotions are exactly revealed in dogs’ brains.
    B. Dog’s brains are highly affected by people’s emotions.
    C. Dogs own the natural ability to understand people’s emotions.
    D. Dogs treat human emotions with different sides of their brains.
    13. How do dogs form the skills to interact with people?
    A. By following certain orders.
    B. By being treated by their owners.
    C. By being closely connected with people.
    D. By recognizing different faces on pictures.
    14. Which can best replace the underlined word “reverse” in paragraph 4?
    A. opposite. B. nervous. C. rewarding. D. similar.
    15. What may be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Dogs are living in close contact with people
    B. Dogs understand what’s written all over your face
    C. Dogs’ heart rate increases when experiencing stress
    D. Negative emotions affect dogs’ returning to feeding

When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having vision problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia, the eldest of their four children, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa(视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic condition that causes a loss or decline in vision over time.
By this point, Lemay and Pelletier, who’ve been married for 12 years, had noticed that two of their sons, Colin, now seven, and Laurent, now five, were experiencing the same symptoms. Their fears were confirmed when in 2019 the boys were diagnosed with the same genetic disorder. Their other son Leo, now nine, was given the all clear. There’s nothing they can really do, because there is currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their children build the skills they’d need to lead their way through life. When Mia’s specialist suggested that they absorb her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her and the rest of the children.
“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book. I’m going to take her to see a real elephant’,” she explains. “And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kids. They think there are great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than traveling. Not only the scenery, but also the different cultures and people.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary(行程) that involved traveling through Russia by land, and spending time in China.

    A Singing Competition
Last Saturday, our school organized a singing competition. It was a sunny day which was suitable for an outdoor activity. All the students and teachers in our school took part in it, which lasted for 3 hours. To our excitement, there were 40 participants competing with each other, including 6 teachers. It was our headmaster who presented the awards to the winners.
Through this competition, not only did we gain the courage but also we learned how to take chances and gain confidence. We all think it meaningful and necessary to hold such an activity.

The trip has provided the children with unforgettable visual experiences. They have gone to over ten countries. During the trip, what impressed them most was the experience in China. The Great Wall was so amazing that they were totally attracted by it. There are beautiful places everywhere in the world, so it doesn’t really matter where they go. And they never know what’s going to impress them. They will tell themselves something is wonderful and keep it in mind that it’s the best thing in their life.
Lemay says, “Traveling is something you can learn from.” It’s nice and fun, but it also can be really hard. You can be uncomfortable. You can be tired. There’s frustration. So there’s a lot that you can learn from travel itself. No matter how hard their life is going to be, from the experience, they can feel that they are lucky just to have running water in their home and to be able to go to school every day with nice colorful books. No matter what they may experience in their later life, the trip will shine a light in their mind.
