根据文章开头“Eight Days from just £299 (8天仅需299英镑)”可知,价格仅为299英镑,比较便宜;结合文中 “Join us for a wonderful holiday in one of Europe’s most wonderful corners. A favorite with holidaymakers — indeed the ancient Romans called the area “happy land” —this simply attractive coastline of colorful towns, splendid views and the warm Mediterranean Sea is a perfect choice for a truly memorable holiday!(加入我们,在欧洲最美妙角落之一度过一个美好的假期。这里是度假者的最爱——的确,古罗马人把这里称为“快乐的土地”——这里有迷人的海岸线,五彩缤纷的城镇,壮丽的景色和温暖的地中海,是一个真正难忘的假期的完美选择!)”可知,旅途风景优美。由此推知,如果一个人读了这则广告并决定加入旅程,其原因可能是:旅程价格合理且风景优美。故选A。

At 74 James Patterson has sold more than 425 million copies of his 200 novels globally, making him one of the highest paid authors in the world. “I do not work for a living. I play for a living. I love doing it,” Patterson tells CNBC. But Patterson’s road to success didn’t happen overnight. He started writing as a side hustle and he faced a lot of rejection before getting his first book published.
Patterson grew up in the woods in Newburgh, New York with an insurance salesman father and a schoolteacher mother. Despite having dreams of being a writer, the idea “always seemed presumptuous”, Patterson says. But after reading books by James Joyce, “it really turned me on to reading, and then I started writing,” he says.
After college, Patterson got his first job as a junior copy writer at the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson. While climbing the corporate ladder, Patterson wrote his first book, The Thomas Berryman Number in the mid-70s. The book “got turned down by 31 publishers”, Patterson says. But after it was finally published in 1976, “then it won an Edgar Award for best first novel.” The Edgar Award, which is named after Edgar Alan Poe, honors the best writers in mystery fiction and non-fiction.
Despite publishing his first book at age 26, Patterson didn’t have a bestseller until he was 40. “It wasn’t like all of a sudden,” he says. In fact, Patterson kept his day job for decades and got promoted to CEO of J. Walter Thompson in 1988. During that time, Patterson says he would read well over 100 books a year to help spark his creativity. “I have a huge imagination and I’m constantly asking, what about this? What about that?” he says.
Despite his success, Patterson says he doesn’t like to give advice, especially about writing. But he credits his own success to his work ethic and passion. “I also don’t take myself too seriously,” he says. “Yeah, I sell a lot of books, so what?”
    4. What do we know about James Patterson?
    A. He produced a bestseller when he was 26.
    B. He read a lot of books to get source of inspiration.
    C. He worked as a full-time writer when he was young.
    D. He got inspiration for his first book when climbing a ladder.
    5. What does the underlined word “presumptuous” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. Unrealistic. B. Contradictory. C. Imaginative. D. Inspiring.
    6. What can we infer about James Patterson from the last paragraph?
    A. He has sold a lot of books. B. He doesn’t take his job seriously.
    C. He values positive attitudes to work. D. He is unwilling to give advice to readers.
    7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. The Secret to Career Success B. A Tough Road to a Bestseller Writer
    C. An Edgar Award Winner D. A Not-to-be-missed Fiction
B 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第四段倒数第二句提到“Patterson says he would read well over 100 books a year to help spark his creativity”(帕特森说,在那段时间里,他每年会阅读超过100本书,以发自己的创造力)可知,Patterson通过大量的阅读来获取灵感。
第二段第一句“Patterson grew up in the woods in Newburgh, New York with an insurance salesman father and a schoolteacher mother.”(帕特森在纽约纽堡的树林中长大,父亲是保险推销员,母亲是教师)和该段最后一句“it really turned me on to reading, and then I started writing”(读了James Joyce的书之后,它真的让我对阅读产生了兴趣,然后我开始写作)推知,在这样一个父母工作比较稳定的家庭里,作家这个职业相对有些不切实际、不稳定。A.Unrealistic不现实的;B.Contradictory相反的;C Imaginative充满想象力的;D.Inspiring鼓舞人心的。 故选A。
最后一段最后两句提到“But he credits his own success to his work ethic and passion.“I also don’t take myself too seriously” he says.“Yeah, I sell a lot of books. so what?
    C
What makes people so special? Tool use, self-consciousness, language, and culture are high on the list, but in fact all of these characteristics can be found elsewhere in the animal kingdom. Humans and apes are close relatives, so it is perhaps not surprising that chimpanzees use tools or that gorillas (大猩猩) have a sense of fair play, even rejecting carrots (which they normally accept) when they see their neighbors getting grapes. But the qualities that we often think of as uniquely human exist not just on land, but in the ocean as well.
Among the invertebrates, octopuses (八爪鱼) are known for their intelligence, even exhibiting evidence of playfulness, tool use, and personality. But these skilled predators live alone and consequently lack culture. Dolphins, on the other hand, are large-brained, long-living, social- group-based predators, and it is here that we find the greatest similarity to human-like culture and awareness.
Culture depends on the ability of animals to pass on things they have learned to others. Many animals have culture in this sense, but what sets dolphins apart is what they pass on. Some bottlenose dolphins hold sponges in their mouths that they use as tools to sweep for fish hiding on the ocean floor. This ability is handed down through generations (especially in females), with some families- grandmother, mother, and daughter - all feeding in this highly specialized way.
Another characteristic that dolphins share with humans is their ability to recognize themselves in a mirror. When facing a mirror, most animals behave as though they are interacting with another individual. Even in humans, the ability to recognize that the image in a mirror is oneself does not occur before the age of 18 months. Dolphins not only recognize themselves, but if a black mark is put on the body of a dolphin, it will spend extra time at the mirror to look at the mark.
    8. The example of gorillas rejecting carrots shows they ________.
    A. are not easy to fool
    B. prefer fruit to vegetables
    C. have a special taste for food
    D. have an awareness of equality
    9. What do octopuses lack compared with dolphins?
    A. Social interaction. B. Intelligence.
    C. Tool using ability. D. Fun-loving spirits.
    10. What makes dolphin culture special?
    A. They tend to hunt in groups.
    B. Their hunting skills are passed down.
    C. Their learning environment is favourable.
    D. Their families are typically female-controlled.
    11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Dolphins enjoy looking at their own reflection in the mirror.
B Dolphins are as intelligent as a typical 18-month-old human baby.
    C. Dolphins are generally regarded as the most advanced non-human species.
    D. Dolphins’ ability to recognize their own reflection is a higher-order mental skill.
    【答案】8 D 9. A 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“Humans and apes are close relatives, so it is perhaps not surprising that chimpanzees use tools or that gorillas (大猩猩) have a sense of fair play, even rejecting carrots (which they normally accept) when they see their neighbors getting grapes.”(人类和猿类是近亲,所以黑猩猩会使用工具或者大猩猩有公平竞争的意识也就不足为奇了,当它们看到自己的邻居拿葡萄时,它们甚至会拒绝胡萝卜(它们通常会接受))可知大猩猩拒绝胡萝卜的例子表明它们有平等意识。
根据第二段“Among the invertebrates, octopuses (八爪鱼) are known for their intelligence, even exhibiting evidence of playfulness, tool use, and personality. But these skilled predators live alone and consequently lack culture. Dolphins, on the other hand, are large-brained, long-living, social- group-based predators, and it is here that we find the greatest similarity to human-like culture and awareness.”(在无脊椎动物中,章鱼以它们的智力而闻名,甚至显示出顽皮、使用工具和个性的证据。 故选A。
根据第三段“Many animals have culture in this sense, but what sets dolphins apart is what they pass on. Some bottlenose dolphins hold sponges in their mouths that they use as tools to sweep for fish hiding on the ocean floor. This ability is handed down through generations (especially in females), with some families- grandmother, mother, and daughter - all feeding in this highly specialized way.”(从这个意义上说,许多动物都有文化,但让海豚与众不同的是它们传承的文化。
根据最后一段“Dolphins not only recognize themselves, but if a black mark is put on the body of a dolphin, it will spend extra time at the mirror to look at the mark.”(海豚不仅能认出自己,而且如果海豚身上有一个黑色的标记,它会花额外的时间在镜子前看这个标记)可推知海豚识别自己倒影的能力是一种更高阶的心智技能。 故选D。
    D
If you grew up in a household that had its fair share of book shelves, it might say something positive about your personally now that you're all grown up.
This new study found that people who grew up in book filled homes have higher reading, math, and technological skills. The researchers analyzed data featuring 160,000 adults (ages 25 to 65) across 31 nations. All participants were asked how many books there were in their home when they were 16 years old. They chose from a series of alternatives ranging from “10 or less” to “more than 500.”
If a household held at least 80 books, then participants went on to display the average rate of literacy and numeracy(认字和计算). The rate of literacy continued to increase in parallel to the number of books a household contained until the rate didn't increase from 350 books onwards. Furthermore, young teenagers who grew up around books were shown to have the same levels of literacy and numeracy as university graduates who had only grown up around a few books.
Literacy was clarified as “the ability to read effectively to participate in society and achieve personal goals.” Participants took tests that “captured ' a range of basic through advanced comprehension skills, from reading brief texts for a single piece of information to synthesizing information from complex texts.” Numeracy tests measured the “ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life,” while IT-related tests “assessed the ability to, use digital. technology to communicate with others, as well as to gather, analyze, and synthesize information.”
The results suggest those books made a long-term difference. “Growing up with home libraries improves adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits from parental education or one’s own educational attainment, “the researchers report. Not surprisingly, the biggest effect was on reading ability. “The total effects of home library size on literacy are large everywhere,” the researchers report.
    12. What can we learn from the new study?
    A. Homes filled with books do much benefit to one’s growth.
B One’s literacy and numeracy are finally shaped at the age of 16.
    C. All participants need to have ten to more than 500 books at home.
    D. Those reading a lot are more competent than university graduates.
    13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The benefit of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
    B. The measurement of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
    C. The relation between literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
    D. The difference between literacy, numeracy and IT ability.
    14. According to the text, books influence one's_________ most.
    A. parental education. B. occupational attainment.
    C. calculating ability. D. reading ability.
    15. What is the writer's purpose in writing the text?
    A. To describe the importance of receiving good education.
    B. To clarify the effect of home library size on one's adult skills.
    C. To explain the necessity of acquiring literacy and numeracy.
    D. To introduce methods of improving one's literacy and numeracy.
A 13. B 14. D 15. B

Why does a mosquito bite itch?
When a mosquito bites you, it pierces the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood and injects saliva (唾液) into your skin. Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our immune cells spring into action to try to fight them. ____17____. It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a mild reaction to bites, while others, more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful.
What helps resist the urge to scratch?
“Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more. “____18____,” warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association, adding that in extreme cases, people can scar themselves.
Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief as well as home remedy (疗法). Choose what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. In general, all of the various anti-itch creams are very similar. There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side effects. ____19____.
    ____20____
Some people can have serious allergic reactions to mosquitoes, although in practice it is rare, Vosshall said. If you experience severe symptoms such as breathing trouble, you should seek medical attention immediately.
    A. In fact, the best remedy to fight the itch is to prevent a bite in the first place
    B. Scratching can cause secondary infections and prolong the irritation
    C. The little red bumps swell up almost immediately
    D. The bites will definitely cause severe allergies
    E. It’s not the bite that causes the itch
    F. What to do with a mosquito bite?

My father and I disagreed about my curfew He would say I had to be in by 9:30 on weekdays, and 11:00 on weekends, and there was no exception. One day, I took courage to first show my opinion on my curfew. I told him it made me feel like a junior high school kid. He explained that though a curfew might sound like a restriction, it was really about people looking out for one another.
The very next Friday after that exchange, my dad and I had tickets to see our own town's professional football game. On that day he was driving his car to a nearby city to meet some major clients and told me that his getting home and our leaving for the game would be tight.
To make sure we could move off the moment he came back, I got everything prepared. When half an hour had passed from the time when he said he would be home, I understood that he was a little late. But then, nearly a whole hour passed. I was getting upset. We were going to miss the kick-off! And why hadn’t he phoned me and let me know he was going to be really late? As I anxiously stepped the floor, another half hour passed. That was when I got really angry. How inconsiderate my father was! We were going to miss the whole game! However, when another half an hour passed, my anger turned to fear. What if something terrible had happened to my dad, like he had a sudden heart attack or was caught in an accident, or something else? I began to get really worried, feeling like sitting on pins and needles. I had already called his cell phone about ten times, but there was no answer.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was beside myself with extreme anxieties, assuming the worst had happened.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The heavy stone in my heart finally fell to the ground.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was beside myself with extreme anxieties, assuming the worst had happened. Suddenly, the phone rang, I rushed to the phone and picked the receiver up, it was my dad. From the other end of the phone came my father’s voice. He said breathlessly, “Son, I am so sorry about the football game, but …there was a terrible accident…on the freeway coming home, and I stopped to help the injured and ended up going to the hospital. I left my phone in the car, so I couldn’t call you until now.”
The heavy stone in my heart finally fell to the ground. I was so relieved to hear from my father. Having learnt that he was safe, I burst into tears. It was at that moment that I had a full understanding of the importance of a curfew. Since then, I have been insisting on checking in! For me, it’s about knowing that someone I love is safe. It is also one more proof of my father’s loving me as much as he does.
