Reading can make you feel less alone and more connected with the world at large. It can open your eyes to issues, successes and challenges that you never dreamed of, and take you to faraway places. Here are the top books all teens should read before they turn 18.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Though this book recently became popular again due to the release of the movie version, the movie is not a substitute for this beautiful story about family and the process of becoming who you truly are through the angle of space and time exploration.
    Wonder by R. J. Palacio
Auggie was born with a facial difference that kept him out of school for years. In fifth grade, he discovers what it’s like to long for normalcy and also that difference can be the most meaningful teacher.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
The author shares beautiful poetry that will speak to teenagers about her experience of growing up in the South as an African-American in the 1960s and 1970s. The poems are charged with the themes of self-awareness and identity.
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
The attractive advice given in this book is perfect for teens going off to college or beginning a new stage of independence. It is a book that can be reread all throughout life without losing its power.

    B
I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet unrelated to boring housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus began a friendship that was to last for 25 years - until the day he died.
George took to painting with an awe-inspiring (令人惊叹的) level of passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. How I envied him, as in my own home and I had neither the space nor the the funds for such a luxury. His painting equipment was comprehensive. George housed many of these items in a tool box- a red metal tool box. For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course.
Fast-forward some years and George was now about 80 years old. One day, he rang and told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”. “I can’t paint, Bev. I don’t know why I ever thought I could,” he declared. Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me. “You have the best talent and are most likely to use it,” he said. After considerable persuasion, I accepted this precious gift on condition that he could get it back at any time. He never did, of course.
I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint, I often remember George, his big personality, generous spirit and unfailing encouragement. The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape. The original shop sticker is till firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price.
    4. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
    A. A desire to create. B. A hobby to kill time.
    C. An escape from chores. D. A chance to make fortune.
    5. What can we infer form paragraph 3?
    A. George once created some fine paintings.
    B. George didn’t like his painting equipment.
    C. George always wanted to give painting.
    D. George misunderstood the author’s painting ability.
    6. Why did George call the author?
    A. To admit his own failure.
    B. To present his painting tools.
    C. To ask the author a favor.
    D. To make an explanation
    7. What is the best title of this passage?
    A. A Lesson from My Old Friend.
    B. Inspiration for Art from My Partner.
    C. Nice George: An Artist with Great Passion.
    D. A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends.
A 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第一段的“I was in my early 30s, seeking a creative outlet unrelated to boring housework and raising little kids. At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class.(当时我30岁出头,正在寻找一个与无聊的家务和抚养小孩无关的创造性出口。65岁的乔治刚刚退休,正在寻找一种有价值的爱好来度过他的黄金岁月。对我们俩来说,绘画就是“它”,我们在当地的一个绘画课上认识)”可知,it指代上文“创造性出口”,即“创作的渴望”。故选A。
根据第三段的“He was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. (他的绘画能力被误解了,因为他曾经创作了一些独特而精彩的作品)”推知,乔治曾经创作了一些很好的画作。故选A。
根据第三段的“One day, he rang and told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”. “I can’t paint, Bev. I don’t know why I ever thought I could,” he declared. Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me.(有一天,他打电话告诉我,他要放弃绘画,放弃他所有的“东西”。
再结合最后一段的“The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that’s all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price. (最珍贵的物品是红色的工具箱,仍然完好无损。原来的商店贴纸仍然牢牢地贴在那里,尽管价格早已磨损。但这没关系,因为在我看来,有些东西是无价的,比如友谊)”可知,D项“A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends. (红色工具箱:两个朋友之间的纽带)”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选D。
    C
It isn’t just the beauty of vast natural wonders like the Grand Canyon that can take your breath away. You can find awe in everyday things. A new research, published in the journal Emotion, found that older adults who took “awe walks” felt more positive emotions in their daily lives.
In the study, 52 older adults aged 60 to 90 were divided randomly into two groups. They were told to take at least one 15-minute walk each week for eight weeks. Volunteers in the “awe group” were instructed in how to inspire awe as they walked. “We asked them to try to see the world with fresh eyes—to take in new details of a leaf or flower, for example,” Sturm says. For example, one participant from the awe group wrote about “the beautiful fall colors and how the leaves were no longer crunchy(嘎吱响) underfoot because of the rain”—the wonder that small children feel as they embrace their expanding world. However, people in the other group were less focused on the world around them. One participant wrote, “I thought about our vacation in Hawaii next Thursday.”
In addition, participants were asked to take selfies(自拍) in the beginning, middle, and end of each walk. Researchers found that participants who took awe walks showed a “small self”, in that they filled less of their photographs with their own image and more with the background scenery. “When we feel awe, our attention shifts from focusing on ourselves to focusing on the world around us, ” Sturm says. “ Awe affects our social relationships because it helps us to feel more connected with the world, universe, and other people.”Their smiles also grew broader by the end of the study. “We analyzed the intensity of their smiles in the selfies, and participants who took awe walks displayed greater smiles over time than those who took control walks. The former reported greater positive emotions in general, including more joy and gratitude.”
Participants in the control group took more frequent walks than those people in the awe group, the researchers discovered. But walking more didn’t result in positive changes in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising.
    8. What were participants in the “awe group” required to do in Paragraph 2?
    A. To take a walk each week.
    B. To focus on their inner world.
    C. To collect leaves after the rain.
    D. To explore with childlike curiosity.
    9. What can we see in the selfies from the awe walks?
    A. Close-up images with wide smiles.
    B. More attention on themselves.
    C. Simply the background scenery.
    D. Small figures with bigger smiles.
    10. What can we know from the last paragraph?
    A. Experiencing awe counts.
    B. More walks, more joy.
    C. Exercises can benefit us.
    D. Awe comes with walking.
    11. Which of the following can be the best title?
    A. Awe Walks Promote Your Physical Fitness
    B. Experiencing Awe Does Wonders for Everyone
    C. Awe Walks Improve Your Positive Emotions
    D. Frequent Walks Contribute to Emotional Health
D 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段的第五句“For example, one participant from the awe group wrote about “the beautiful fall colors and how the leaves were no longer crunchy(嘎吱响)underfoot because of the rain”—the wonder that small children feel as they embrace their expanding world. (比如,敬畏步行组的一名参与者描写了“秋天美丽的颜色,下雨后,脚下的树叶不再被踩得嘎吱响。”——这种惊奇像孩子们拥抱他们不断延伸的世界时所感受到的那样。)”可知,研究人员要求敬畏步行组怀着孩子般的好奇心探索路程。故选D项。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的第二句“Researchers found that participants who took awe walks showed a ‘small self , in that they filled less of their photographs with their own image and more with the background scenery.(研究人员发现,敬畏地散步的参与者表现出一种“小我”,因为他们用自己的图像填充的照片较少,而更多地用背景风景填充。)”和倒数第三句“Their smiles also grew broader by the end of the study.(研究结束时,他们的笑容也变得更加灿烂。)”
最后一段的最后两句“But walking more didn’t result in positive changes in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising.(但是多走路并不会对情绪健康或者自拍方式产生积极的影响。这表明,结果主要是由于体验敬畏,而不只是在花时间锻炼。)”提到积极健康情绪产生于心怀敬畏,而非只是简单地花时间锻炼。由此可知,作者在最后一段想传达的是,心怀敬畏才是真正产生影响的。故选A项。
结合全文,文章主要介绍一项有关awe walk(敬畏步行)的研究,尤其是根据第一段的“A new research published in the journal Emotion, found that older adults who took ‘ awe walks’felt more positiveemotions in their daily lives.(发表在《情感》杂志上的一项新研究发现,那些“敬畏步行”的老年人在日常生活中感受到更多的积极情绪。)”和最后一段“Participants in the control group took more frequent walks than those people in the awe group, the researchers discovered. But walking more didn’t result in positive change: in emotional health or in the way their selfies were taken. This suggests that the results were mainly due to experiencing awe, and not just in spending time exercising.(研究人员发现,控制组的参与者比敬畏组的参与者更频繁地散步。但是多走路并不会对情绪健康或者自拍方式产生积极的影响。这表明,结果主要是由于体验敬畏,而不只是在花时间锻炼。)”可知,敬畏步行有利于促进积极健康情绪。所以C项“敬畏步行能促进积极的情绪”最适合作为本文标题。故选C项。
    D
Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev say that the popular dieting strategy of serving food on smaller plates does not necessarily trick us into eating less.
“Plate size doesn’t matter as much as we think it does,” says Dr. Tzvi Ganel, head of the study in a media release. “Even if you’re hungry and haven’t eaten, or are trying to cut back on portions (份), a serving looks similar whether it fills a smaller plate or is surrounded by empty space on a larger one.”
Some dieters may try eating off of smaller plates, hoping that they will feel full because the serving size appears larger on the smaller plate. This strategy is based on the classic Delbouef illusion (错觉), which found that people seeing a black circle inside a larger circle perceived the circle to be smaller than when the same sized black circle was placed inside a smaller circle.
Researchers determined that hunger seems to help with visual perception of food portions. In the experiment, participants who had eaten recently had a difficult time estimating pizza portions that were placed on larger versus smaller trays. But participants who had not eaten for at least three hours were better able to estimate portion sizes correctly.
The authors remind that their results only applied to food sizes. Both groups of participants performed about the same when asked to compare sizes of black circles and hubcaps (轮毂) placed inside different sized circles. Study authors say the results suggest that hunger strengthens our ability to analyze and process what we are seeing.
“Over the last decade, restaurants and other food businesses have been using progressively smaller dishes to adapt to the perceptual bias (偏差) that it will reduce food consumption,” says Ganel. “This study debunks that view. When people are hungry, especially when dieting, they are less likely to be fooled by the plate size, more likely to realize they are eating less and more ready to overeating later.”
So don’t kid yourself. Put away the Barbie plates and give it three hours. Then grab that giant plate and dig in. Your eyes will choose the right size.
    12. Why do some dieters switch to smaller dishes?
    A. To seek an elegant lifestyle. B. To measure the serving size.
    C. To have the impression of being full. D. To see whether Delbouef illusion is true.
    13. What helps to judge food sizes accurately?
    A. The black color. B. The size of circles.
    C. The strong need for food. D. The delicious taste of food.
    14. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “debunks” in paragraph 6?
    A. Disapproves. B. Confirms. C. Reflects. D. Discovers.
    15. What does the text mainly tell us?
    A. Dieting requires smaller plates. B. Your dinner plate affects your weight.
    C. Eating less is a popular dieting practice. D. Smaller plates won’t lead to less eating.
C 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第三段“Some dieters may try eating off of smaller plates, hoping that they will feel full because the serving size appears larger on the smaller plate.”(一些节食者可能会尝试用较小的盘子盛食物,希望他们会觉得饱了,因为在较小的盘子里,份量看起来更大)可知,一些节食者用较小的盘子盛食物是为了营造一种饱腹感,故选C。
根据第四段“Researchers determined that hunger seems to help with visual perception of food portions.”(研究人员确定,饥饿似乎有助于对食物份量的视觉感知)可知,对食物的强烈需要有助于准确判断食物的份量,故选C。
根据划线词后的“When people are hungry, especially when dieting, they are less likely to be fooled by the plate size, more likely to realize they are eating less and more ready to overeating later.”(当人们饥饿时,尤其是节食时,他们不太可能被盘子的大小所愚弄,更可能意识到自己吃得越来越少,以后可能会暴饮暴食)可知,这项研究驳斥了“用小盘子盛食物吃得会更少”这一观点,由此可知划线词词义为“驳斥、不赞成”,故选A。
通读全文,特别是根据第一段“Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev say that the popular dieting strategy of serving food on smaller plates does not necessarily trick us into eating less.”(内盖夫本古里安大学的研究人员说,用小盘盛食物的流行节食策略并不一定会使我们少吃)可知,本文主要介绍了研究发现用小盘盛食物的节食策略并不一定会使我们少吃,故选D。
