As the pressure to save the planet increases, it’s important to turn the conversation to our closet.
Stockpiling endless printed books on sustainability seems
somewhat unwise, but The Conscious Closet is easily the best of the lot. It exposes the true cost of fast fashion and encourages the reader to think twice about unwise purchasing, drawing deeply on Cline’s own experiences.

When I visited the remote Swedish town of Alvdalen, I was immediately struck by the forest-covered valley in which it is situated. I was set to meet the last speakers of Elfdalian. The language is currently used only by about 2,500 people, but it has preserved language features that are to be found nowhere else in Scandinavia.
Elfdalian is unique among Nordic (北欧人的) languages, with different tones and sounds. Even the
grammar and vocabulary are unlike Swedish. So, while speakers of Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish are able to have simple conversations and understand each other, it is not so with Elfdalian. While Elfdalian originated from the same region as Swedish, it is completely baffling to non-local people.
For centuries, it was unnecessary for the majority of the native Elfdalian-speaking population to learn
standard Swedish or other languages, as most trade and economic networks occurred within local areas. Elfdalian remained an active language until the 20th century.
However, with increased mobility and the arrival of mass media, speakers of Elfdalian shifted to
Swedish. At present, only half of the residents of Alvdalen speak it, and of the youngest generation, only
    高三英语定时训练 第4页 共11页
about 60 children under the age of 15 are fluent in it.
During my visit, I was lucky to be introduced to a group of language activists united under the name Ulum Dalska. Attempts are being made by these local enthusiasts to revive (复苏) the language. After
many years of action; Ulum Dalska has recently been successful in convincing the local authorities to start
up an Elfdalian-speaking group at the local preschool. This means that, for the first time in history, Elfdalian has made its official entry into the Swedish schooling system.
On the whole, more and more people seem to be convinced of the preciousness of Elfdalian and the
need to preserve it for future generations. And in a globalizing world, the right attitude is perhaps the most important step towards a full language recovery.
    51. Why did the author go to the town of Alvdalen?
    A. To pay a visit to some friends. B. To tour a forest-covered valley.
    C. To discover a remote Swedish forest.
    D. To explore a unique ancient language.
    52. Which of the following best explains “baffling” underlined in Paragraph 2?
    A. Out of date. B. Easy to learn.
    C. Convenient to spread. D. Beyond the comprehension.
    53. What contributed to Elfdalian’s role as an active language before the 20th century?
    A. The huge Elfdalian-speaking population.
    B. The self-sufficient economy among the locals.
    C. The natives’ refusal to accept other languages.
    D. The high economic status of Elfdalian-speaking areas.
    54. What do we know about Ulum Dalska?
    A. It aims to protect Elfdalian. B. It is financed by the government.
    C. It was initiated by language experts.
    D. It tries to reform the teaching philosophy.
    55. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. An encounter with some language activists in Alvdalen
    B. Social development determines language evolution
    C. Elfdalian, an old tongue, set to come to life
    D. Globalization is an unavoidable trend
    C
For as long as there have been gifts, we naturally make choices based on the recipient (接受者). But
what if we have been wrong all along and that we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?
In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested
that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.
But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we
connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.
To find out how that approach goes down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half
of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that
revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in
    高三英语定时训练 第5页 共11页
    mind.
Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be—then we “may well be advised to offer more
self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even
if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one acquired purely with that in mind.
Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces
the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character—and failing.
But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated,
unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession” —and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.
    56. From the Mother’s Day card test, we can conclude that .
    A. gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver
    B. most people choose gifts with the recipient in mind
    C. most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes
    D. gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the recipient
    57. What do the underlined words “them, them” refer to in order of appearance?
    A. The recipients; the givers. B. The givers; the recipients.
    C. The givers; the givers. D. The recipients; the recipients.
    58. What does the author think is the significance of gift giving?
    A. Making the giver’s life happier.
    B. Showing one’s knowledge of the recipient.
    C. Establishing and strengthening social connections.
    D. Meeting the recipient’s practical needs.
    59. Which of the following is Human and Aknin’s advice on gift giving?
    A. Choose gifts that reflect more of yourself.
    B. Just focus on your own tastes when choosing gifts.
    C. Buy something that fits the recipient’s character most.
    D. Be careful not to signal your true personality.
    60. Which is the best title of this passage?
    A. The tradition of gift giving. B. The purpose of gift giving.
    C. The effect of gift giving. D. The psychology of gift giving.
    D
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me
the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but
it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others,
thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s
not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us
from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt differently; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own
    高三英语定时训练 第6页 共11页
lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel enthusiastic for others and for ourselves. And enthusiasm is a heartfelt emotion that conveys loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of
this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
    61. The author thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.
    A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion
    B. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair
    C. it made him recall something during his childhood
    D. he learned something from the question as a youngster
    62. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.
    A. keep us from making everything perfect
    B. keep us from doing everything in our power
    C. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things
    D. make us face unfair treatment bravely
    63. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.
    A. it’s nice to accept the injustice of life
    B. it’s nice to surrender to the life
    C. we should not surrender to the life
    D. we should not feel sorry for everything
    64. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact” refers to the fact that ________.
    A. you should not pity for others B. life isn’t and won’t be fair
    C. compassion is heartfelt emotion D. pity is a self-defeating emotion
    65. According to the author, when recognizing life injustice, you may ________.
    A. do nothing to improve our life B. feel pity to other people
    C. take measures to solve life problem D. receive enthusiasm from others

Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency
Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with
a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction
of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee.

I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs.
We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s
determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything.
