    We measure an earthquake’s strength n the Richter scale. The Richter scale was intrduced in 1935 in Suthern Califrnia in the USA. It measures earthquakes n a scale f ne t ten. Any earthquake measuring five r mre is usually serius.
    The earth’s crust (地壳) is made up f layers f rck called plates. As these plates mve, they smetimes
    crash against each ther, causing the crust t quake. In cities such as Tky, where small quakes happen quite ften, many mdern buildings are designed t be flexible s when the earth mves, they mve with it.
    Earthquakes can als break up gas r il pipes. This can cause fires t break ut, which can d as much damage as the earthquake itself.
    Anther effect f earthquakes is tsunamis (海啸). These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath
    the sea. They can be many metres high and cause great damage t castal twns and cities.
    China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest ccurrence (发生) f earthquakes in the wrld.
