I have a neighbour we call "Happy". I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻的) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben's beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbourhood over for an "all--day food feast(盛宴)". We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn't know what was about to take place.
By 9: 00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra and squash. By 10: 00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o'clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty (收成) of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn't so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another's company. None of it would have happened if it had not been for Happy and Ben's garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decide to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!

On my first day at senior high, I arrived, and I went to the gym for the pep rally(赛前动员会). I felt nervous because I didn't know anybody. I sat down and then made a new friend, Nick.
After the pep rally, Nick and I walked out of the gym to our first class, Mr. Malouf’ s ancient civilization. We walked through the hallways looking for the classroom. As we were walking, I realized all the hallways looked like the inside of a hospital. I wasn't used to being in a school without much decoration. My junior high was covered with projects on the hallways walls.
When Nick and I met Mr. Malouf we saw that he was of average height and had brown hair. The class could tell from his introduction that he knew how everyone in the class felt. We were comforted after Mr. Malouf said "Okay, I know that this is your first day at senior high, but I still want this to be a good first class of senior high even though you are all thinking 'I'm so nervous because this is my first class!'” Afterwards, our classmates introduced themselves to the other members of the class. Next, Mr. Malouf told the class about his background. After the class, Nick and I verbally exchanged schedules and went to our next classes wherever they happened to be.
I had pictured my first day at senior high would be like the ones you see in the movies, but it wasn't.The first day at senior high in the movies usually shows a lonely teenager who is sitting by himself at lunch. But my day was so wonderful. It made me realize that people should believe that wonderful things do happen instead of always worrying about the bad things in life. I’d like to thank my friends and teachers who gave me such a good first day at senior high.

    A. It seems very simple B. It is close to a hospital

    29. What impression might Mr. Malouf leave the author with on the first day?
    A. He is a learned and strict teacher. B. He is a tall and brown-haired teacher
    C. He is a talkative and easy-going teacher. D. He is a caring and understanding teacher
    30. What does the author learn from his first day at senior high?
    A. Face the loneliness bravely B. Expect the good things in life
    C. Keep learning and growing D. Believe in the importance of friendship
    31. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
    A. To introduce the people he met at his senior high
    B. To introduce the daily activities at his senior high
    C. To share his experience on his first day at senior high
    D. To share his plans he made on the first day at senior high
    D
You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It's the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart's music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase "the Mozart effect" was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart's music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them produce better milk.
I'll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield (产量) to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent.
    32. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
    A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
    B. There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect.
    C. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart's music.
    D. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent.
    33. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggests that ________.
    A. people were strongly against the idea
    B. Mozart played an important part in people's life
    C. the idea was accepted by many people
    D. the US government helped promote the idea
    34. What is the author's attitude towards the Mozart effect?
    A. Favorable. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
    35. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. What Music Is Beneficial? B. Listening to Mozart, Necessary?
    C. What Is the Mozart Effect? D. To Be or Not to Be?
School success means different things to different people. No matter what success means to you, strong study skills, confidence and goals are key components. 36 . Therefore, why not try the following tips to achieve it?
    Organize yourself
When a student lacks organization, he struggles to complete schoolwork on time, or find time to study. 37 . When you sit down to study, you need to organize your time well by allowing enough time for each task. You also need an organized backpack that allows you to transport materials to and from classes.
    38
Spending time with friends, working a part-time job and pursuing other interests has a place. However, you also need to leave time to achieve academic goals, or else your studies will be affected negatively. For example, working too many hours at a job reduces study and sleep time, possibly meaning missed school and difficulty concentrating due to being tired.
    Look for support
Whether or not you struggle in school, a support network helps you succeed. So communicate with your teacher outside of class time to ask for help when you struggle. 39 . If your friends think school is a waste of time, you may be influenced to think so.
    Go beyond the classroom
Learning doesn't stop at the classroom doors. 40 . When a topic in the classroom interests you, you should do a little research on your own. For example, set up your own experiment based on something you learned in science class.
    A.Balance activities and your studies
B.It isn't limited to the information on the next exam
    C.Never miss school
D.Surround yourself with classmates who also want to succeed in school
E.For students who struggle in school, additional support is necessary for success
F.You need an organized study place at home for completing homework and studying
G.School success opens up doors for future achievements for students at all grade levels

Five years ago, I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted (通勤) to work by bus. Those long tiring hours of travelling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I’d just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row, by the window, on the driver’s side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no signs that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middle-aged woman took a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully told her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the last stop, a thief had stolen one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she’d brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her story. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, took out some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, looking still worried.
An old man in tattered (破旧的) clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seat directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When he came to the old man’s seat, he became doubtful and asked the old man whether he had any money. The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he’d accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the whole thing. _________________________________________________________

根据第二段中“As we were walking, I realized all the hallways looked like the inside of a hospital. I wasn't used to being in a school without much decoration.(当我们走着的时候,我意识到所有的走廊看起来都像是在医院里。我不习惯在一所没有太多装饰的学校里读书)”可知,作者的高中看起来很简单。故选A。
根据第三段中“The class could tell from his introduction that he knew how everyone in the class felt. We were comforted after Mr. Malouf said "Okay, I know that this is your first day at senior high, but I still want this to be a good first class of senior high even though you are all thinking 'I'm so nervous because this is my first class!'”(从他的介绍可以看出,他了解班上每个人的感受。Malouf老师说:“好吧,我知道这是你们上高中的第一天,但我仍然希望这是高中的第一堂课,即使你们都在想‘我好紧张,因为这是我的第一堂课!’”)”可知,第一天,Malouf先生给作者留下的印象是他是一个关心和理解的老师。故选D。
【30题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段中“It made me realize that people should believe that wonderful things do happen instead of always worrying about the bad things in life.(这让我意识到,人们应该相信美好的事情会发生,而不是总是担心生活中的坏事)”可知,作者从高中的第一天学到了期待生活中的美好事物。
根据第一段中“On my first day at senior high, I arrived, and I went to the gym for the pep rally.(在我上高中的第一天,我到了,我去体育馆参加动员大会)”以及最后一段“I’d like to thank my friends and teachers who gave me such a good first day at senior high. (我要感谢我的朋友和老师,是他们给了我一个很好的高中第一天)”可推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是分享他在高中第一天的经历。故选C。
    【答案】32. B 33. C 34. C 35. B
    【分析】本文是说明文。文章介绍了the Mozart effect并对其提出质疑,最后否定了它的科学性。
【32题详解】细节理解题。由第一自然段最后一句“when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed. (当说到它能让你更聪明的科学证据时,情况就复杂多了)”可知,在谈到the Mozart effect的科学证据时,情况就不是那么明朗了,说明并无太多证据。故选B项。
【33题详解】词句猜测题。根据下文“with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children,...the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that... even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day. (成千上万的父母为他们的孩子演奏莫扎特,……美国乔治亚州的州长,甚至要求在州预算中留出资金,以便……甚至一个意大利农民也自豪地解释说,奶牛每天都要演奏三次莫扎特的音乐)”可知,这种观点得到了很多人的赞同。故选C项。
【34题详解】推理判断题。根据第一自然段“when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed. (当说到它能让你更聪明的科学证据时,情况就复杂多了)”和第四自然段“but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent. (但这些好处是短暂的,不会让我们变得更聪明)”可知,作者对the Mozart effect持怀疑态度。故选C项。
    【35题详解】主旨大意题。首段对the Mozart effect作了简单介绍并对其科学性提出质疑,末段用科学研究来否定了其科学性。所以本文主要是对the Mozart effect的质疑。故选B项。
    36.G 37.F 38.A 39.D 40.B
36.根据后句“Therefore, why not try the following tips to achieve it?” 可知,G项“School success opens up doors for future achievements for students at all grade levels”学校的成功为各个年级的学生打开了通往未来成就的大门。
37.根据前句“When a student lacks organization, he struggles to complete schoolwork on time, or find time to study.” 可知,F项“You need an organized study place at home for completing homework and studying”你需要在家中有序的学习场所来完成作业和学习。
38.根据本段中“Spending time with friends, working a part-time job and pursuing other interests has a place.” 以及“However, you also need to leave time to achieve academic goals, or else your studies will be affected negatively.” 可知,A项“Balance activities and your studies” 平衡课外活动和学习。
39.根据后句“If your friends think school is a waste of time, you may be influenced to think so.” 可知D项“Surround yourself with classmates who also want to succeed in school”与也想在学校取得成功的同学们在一起。与后句中“If your friends think school is a waste of time,”如果你的朋友觉得学校学习是浪费时间。
40.根据前句“Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom doors.” 以及后句中“When a topic in the classroom interests you, you should do a little research on your own.” 可知,B项“It isn’t limited to the information on the next exam”不仅局限于下一次考试方面的信息。

    Paragraph 1:
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus. The old man didn’t move. He was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take the bus so he could get home before dark. The bus driver, who had been listening to his explanation, stood up, walked to the old man, and repeated the conductor’s order to ask the old man to get off the bus. Apart from the harsh words from the driver and sobs from the old man, the whole bus was in a terrible silence.

    Paragraph 2:
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the whole thing. When the bus driver and conductor raised their voices at the old man, she shouted, “Stop bothering him! Can’t you see he’s only trying to get home?” “He doesn’t have any money!” the driver shouted back. “Well, that’s no reason to throw him off the bus,” she insisted. Meanwhile, she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” How much sweet the journey was when we made it easy for others!
