    1. 阅读下面短文根据所给情节进行续写使之构成一个完整的故事。

Surprises are beautiful because they come without waiting. It was not so true for Nancy though. She was sure her younger sister, Kate, was planning a surprise for her birthday. Opening the curtains of her bedroom window, she hungrily drank in the fresh morning air. Nancy was turning 30 today. "Keep calm. It's only your 30th birthday." she thought to herself, quickly glancing at the mirror and looking away. She never liked looking at the mirror. It always reminded her of what she had suffered. She didn't want to think of the past and all that it had done to her.

Over these years she had worked at different factories and cleaned the floors at big hotels where perfumed men and women floated easily. Ever since their parents died, her only goal was to educate Kate. Nancy didn't go to her dreamy university. Her emotions came running back to the present. Quickly, she wiped her tears and rushed to the door.

"A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost." Kate was her dream, her hope, her happiness and her precious possession. She meant everything to her. Kate was so outstanding that she was admitted to Harvard University. And today, Nancy was sure Kate would surprise her with a gift like she did every year. Nancy imagined the freshly baked chocolate cake that would welcome her. Her tongue was eager to lick up the soft, brown cream and her teeth were ready to bite it. She heard the sound of Kate's footsteps coming towards her. She waited smiling.

It seemed like an endless wait. Finally, she heard her younger sister approaching her room. Her eyes lit up, steps turned into a spring and her heart was pounding. She sniffed the air to catch a breath of the chocolate cake but she couldn't. "Maybe it is not chocolate flavor this time." she imagined with pride. Her sister was a grown-up now. She could surprise her with something else.

As I sat on the bus waiting to arrive at school, the sun shining. I just sat there full of excitement ready to enjoy the first day of spring. At last, the bus stopped and I started my day.

The whole day I was waiting for one thing, noon break. As the day passed by, I heard the bell rang and everyone rushed out of the door. I hurried and ate lunch just to get outside.

As soon as I was out, my close friend, Riley called me over to play basketball. We all started playing and time flew by as we heard the timekeeper yell, "10 more minutes." From that point on, the game sped up. Score after score, the competition process was more intense. I passed it to my teammate, Austin, and he dished it back as I pulled up a shot. I felt as if the world around me were barely moving, and all I concentrated on was the ball going to the hoop(篮筐)Not knowing I was pushed back hard, I hit the ground. A huge pain entered my left ankle. I wanted to scream, but I didn't, hearing the people around me shout for help. I just lay there as Riley came over to pick me up and Austin fetched a wheelchair from the school clinic. Both of them helped me sit on the wheelchair. It seemed like the whole school circled around me as I was being pushed away.

The moment we entered the clinic where I always felt nervous, I didn't think my ankle hurt as badly as it did just now, so I said, "I'm okay." Then they had to send me back to class without any treatment. The rest of the day I felt my ankle swelling up and I thought of how stupid I was to say that my ankle didn't hurt in the clinic. "I should have gone home." I thought to myself as I was thrown through this terrible pain. After school, I worried how to go back home.

    3. 阅读下面短文根据所给情节进行续写使之构成一个完整的故事。

A long time ago, when I worked in Ahmedabadwe would often drive to Mount Abu for short trips-it took us anywhere between seven to eight hours to drive up. That yearmy close relatives were visiting from Lucknow during the Dussehra holidaysand we made a plan to visit Abu for three days. Since there were seven of usincluding my brother's family who also lived in Ahmedabadwe hired two cabs. We packed ourselves into the vehiclesstacked(堆放)our luggage on the carriers on top and started out.

A good time was had by alland soon it was time to return. During the journey backwe stopped at a Dhaba for tea and snacks near the Mehsana district. That's when I noticed suddenly that the rope with which the luggage was tied in one of the carriers had come loose and one of the suitcases was missing. It must have fallen off somewhere along the way.

Although it didn't contain any valuables-just clothes and some cash, we decided to retrace our stepsdriving back four kilometres, looking for the bag. But luck wasn't our friend: we could not locate it and returned to Ahmedabad depressed.

After about a month, one daywhile in my office, I got a call from my assistant that a certain Mr Shah wanted to see me. I was in the middle of a meeting so he was asked to wait. After I got done, I called him into my office.

I was looking after the development of small industries in the state at the time, so my immediate query was, "How can we help you? Do you want to set up an industry or are you facing any issues in your enterprise?"

To which he said"No, sir. I have not come for any official help. It is a personal matter. Did you lose something recently?"

Of course, it all came back to me and I told him about the lost suitcase from the cab back from Mount Abu a month ago.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.

The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!

In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.

    5. 阅读下面短文根据所给情节进行续写使之构成一个完整的故事。

Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. He'd hiked the park near his home in Southern Califonia numerous times. But after exploring along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.

As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless wandering, his concern turned to fear. The place was remote and rough. With no flashlight, only a little water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour journey he'd planned.

Compean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. "SOS. My phone is going to die. I'm lost." he texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was.

All Compean could do then was wait and hope. The temperature was dropping fast, and the winds were becoming stronger. Wearing little, Compean was chilled to the bone. He hugged himself into a tight ball, using his backpack to protect his bare legs. But he wouldn't sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night on high alert(戒备), keeping a big stick and some sharp rocks beside him in case an animal came close.

Sixty miles away in Ventura County, Ben Kuo was working at home when he read a Tweet from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriffs' search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the message to the public, hoping someone might know the location.

Kuo, then 47, works in the tech industry, and he has an unusual hobby: "I have always loved looking for where photos are taken," he says. When he saw the unclear image of Compean's legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and plants, he instinctively(本能的) pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. Since the Sheriff's Department said Compean's car was parked near Buckhom Campground, he soon narrowed his search to a possible location. The final step was comparing the original photo with the 3-D images of that place from Google Earth.

"Going to Nationals!" We were all screaming and jumping. Kate, Jenny, Wendy and I embraced each other, bouncing. "Good job, Tara." Said Kate as she put an arm around me. I am the youngest on the relay race team, but I'm fast. When I run, I leave the skin of my shyness behind, and I feel like a horseman on the Mongolian grassland, free, without boundaries.

Everybody ran to their parents in the bleachers (露天看台). My Mom didn't make it. Again. I grabbed my phone and called her. It took a while for her to answer. "Yes, hi dear." "Mom, we won states, and we are going to nationals." I burst out in one breath. "Great! Let's talk later; I'll pick you up from school." I wanted to say: "Is that it? Why aren't you proud of me? All other parents are here, why aren't you?" but all I did was "OK, see you soon." Does she see me? Do I matter?

It was late after 9 PM. All the parents picked up their children, but my Mom wasn't here yet. Coach Johnson waited with me. We just stood. A speeding car turned the corner; it was my Mom's Toyota. Coach patted me on the back and left.

"I am so sorry I am late. Time just flew." Said Mom. I wanted to cry in disappointment and tell her that I hate to be always last to be picked up and never have her come to my sporting contests, school plays, or anything else; ask her why she won't make time for me. But when I looked at her and saw her tired eyes and clenched jaw (咬紧下巴), I just said: "That's OK, Mom, I understand." Her jaw had stayed clenched since we came to this country as Mom would say: "with two pieces of luggage, a three-year-old (me), and $700."

    7. 阅读下面短文根据所给情节进行续写使之构成一个完整的故事。

No matter how small you are, you can also give help or support to others. I didn't understand these words until I saw my grandfather weep that day.

I grew up in Southern California, and my family often went to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and Sea World. The highlight of those park visits for me was always the evening activities, when there would be fireworks.

As I grew older and more observant, I noticed that my grandfather would go missing just before the fireworks were scheduled to start and reappear shortly after they finished. I asked my mother about this and was told that Grandpa didn't like to hear the noise of the explosions. They reminded him of the war and his fellows who died in the war. So every time there was fireworks, he would go inside the bathrooms until they were done. I felt surprised because my grandfather was such a strong man.

One summer night, somewhere near my tenth birthday, my family and I exited a ride just in time to hear over the loudspeakers, "In only two minutes, the lights will be turned off around the Rivers of America, and Disneyland will present their fireworks in the skies over the park." At this moment, Grandpa was just in front of me, and when he heard the announcement, he started jogging ahead without a word to anyone. Without really thinking, I took off after him, against the orders of my mother, who repeatedly called after me to stay with the rest of the family. Grandpa, unaware that I was behind him, tried desperately to walk through the masses of people who were stopped in the street waiting for the show to begin.

As he tried to reach the restrooms, the first shell(烟花弹)broke in the skies above us. Grandpa paused and looked up, just looking as if he had been hit by a shot. And then he kept moving forward. As shell after shell burst overhead, he struggled forward, and almost fell over before he could sit onto a bench nearby.

    A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

    答案以及解析

    1.答案:

Kate walked into her room empty-handed. No cakes, no flowers, and no package wrapped in shiny golden paper, tied with red ribbons. The excitement disappeared from Nancy's face. Kate was smiling. She could win the world with the radiance of her smile. She gave her sister a tight hug. "Happy birthday," said Kate. Nancy loosened herself from the warm embrace and looked at her sister. "Thank you," she said, smiling coldly. "And here's your gift," Kate said.

Kate handed her a brown envelope. Nancy's eyebrows shot up like mountain peaks and her eyes were flooded with questions. "Sacrificing your happiness for the happiness of the one you love is by far the truest type of love. This is an admission. You are admitted to the community university. I want you to pick up from where you left. It's time that you achieve your dream." Nancy's eyes grew wet and her trembling hands were held firmly by Kate.

    2.答案:

Just then I found Riley come in with an ice pack in his hand. From his look, I could easily read his concern, which instantly brought tears to my eyes. He asked if my ankle swelled, his voice obviously full of care and anxiety. I nodded helplessly, eyes automatically settling on my aching ankle. Handing me the ice pack, he told me it could help relieve the pain and reduce swelling at the early stage. So moved was I that I extended my heartfelt gratitude to him. He just smiled, saying that we were good friends and offering to send me home.

As we went out, we were surprised to find Austin holding some medicinal oil. "I usually use this kind of oil when I get hurt and it does work. You can have a try." he said with sincerity. All of a sudden, I felt I was the happiest person in the world. I hugged my friends tightly, joyful tears rolling in my eyes. Blessed with such friends, I felt I had so much to be grateful for. Joking about my basketball skill, they sent me home.

    3.答案:

Then Shah told his side of the story. While driving home, he noticed a suitcase lying by the side of the road. He left a message at the Lost and Found, but no one approached him for the suitcase. About a month passed, he could do nothing but break open the lock and found my name and address inside. Words failed me to convey my thanks for his kindness and generosity. Of course, I mentioned that I would visit his residence in the evening and collect my bag.

But the gentleman insisted on delivering the suitcase to me. In the evening he and his wife came to my house with the suitcase. We chatted over tea. I thanked them again. It was not for the belongings but for the efforts they spared to find me. We remained in touch for quite some time afterwards, but somehow we lost touch with each other. Hats off to him, the man who makes me realize that kindness still rules the world.

    4.答案:

With just one flower left I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. "I think she's the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most," said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.

It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can't wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!

    5.答案:

Compared to the map of Google Earth, the location matched! Without hesitation, he quickly called the Sheriff's Department to provide Compean's possible location. Soon, a search-and-rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean. After spending 27 hours alone in the wilderness, Compean was finally pulled safely into the helicopter. Happy and relieved, Compean cried, "I'm safe!", tears streaming down his face.

After being rescued, Compean met Ben Kuo on the Internet. Compean expressed his heartfelt thanks sincerely, saying to Ben Kuo : "I was so lucky. Your help allowed the rescue team to find me much sooner . My story probably would have ended very differently without your strong satellite skills and kind heart. I owe you my life." Hearing what Compean said, Ben Kuo comforted him, saying other strangers would do the same thing as well when possible. Bearing in mind that the strangers' random act of kindness can really be helpful, Compean determined to pass forward the kindness.

    6.答案:

Nationals finally came and My Mom came for the first time ever. Seeing my Mom in the bleachers, I was especially excited. I was like racehorses at the gate: nervously waiting and heads held high. I was the last runner in our team." I have to seal the win." I told myself. After Wendy passed the baton in my hand, I exploded forward. The crowd were screaming. My thoughts rocked with the pulse of the blood. I was beginning to pick up speed again when I was suddenly thrown off balance. Just as I was regaining control, I hit the floor and dropped the baton. My world had just ended.

I had let everybody down and I ran out to hide myself. My legs were all bloody, but that's not what hurt. I disappointed everybody. After a while, my mom, with red eyes, found me. "I will quit the team." I whispered. "No, love! You had the best time in the race. It was an accident." She continued to make me feel good, but I heard only her soft voice coming as a warm embrace at me, and then I cried out my sorrow," You're… never at my meets… always late… you don't have time… you're not proud of me." Her voice dropped, "I love you so much that I wanted to build a stronger boat for us. I am proud of you every second." Thirsty for those words, I ran into her arms. The next day, I went back to the track. When I looked at my Mom in the bleachers, we smiled.

    7.答案:

Instantly, I went forward and was by his side. And when he looked up at me in surprise, I saw fear on a face that had only shown strength and kindness before. I grasped his hand in mine. It was trembling and seemed suddenly much weaker than I remembered. Grandpa sunk into my arms. His breath was labored and quick, and he wept soundlessly. I kept perfectly still and didn't say a word. Absorbed in the show, no one noticed us on that bench as we sat for what seemed like hours... a child supporting a grown man.

When the fireworks show ended, he straightened suddenly and wiped the tears. He calmed himself for just a moment, and then put his arm around me and said, " Thanks, child. " Seconds later, he was on his feet, declaring that we should find the others and leading me into the crowd by the hand. I once again felt his strong hand. Walking through the crowds, I knew that I ought to never mention this to anyone. At the same time, I realized that everyone can offer help and support to others however little he is.

    8.答案:

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father's appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn't expect. The children said loudly, "Happy Mother's Day!" Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
