    Searching the OED
How to use the quick search
The quick search bar can be found on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone. It also finds phrases and compounds listed within main entries, such as to look up or alphabet book, and different forms of spellings such as dictionarie.
    Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbol which stands for any character. The question mark ? represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk * represents the occurrence of any number of characters (or no character at all). Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to find several terms beginning with the same root.
How to use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary. Advanced search can be especially useful for very specific searches. You can use the search area functionality to search by each section of an entry. You can also use filters to narrow your search to match certain criteria.
    Browsing by categories
Categories allow you to explore the dictionary through groupings of words in, for instance, a subject or from a particular origin. If you want to find all the Carribbean borrowings in English, or find the first word related to espionage(间谍行为) to enter the dictionary, this is the function for you.
Further explore your search by using the options that appear on the right-hand side of the results page.
    21. What will you use if you are not sure of the spelling of a word?
    A. The quick search. B. Wildcard searches.
    C. The advanced search. D. Browsing by categories.
    22. What’s the requirement of using the advanced search?
    A. Registering for the dictionary. B. Matching certain criteria.
    C. Searching with specific words. D. Searching with purpose.
    23. Where is this text probably taken from?
    A. A dictionary. B. A brochure. C. A website. D. A textbook.

I've spent a long time thinking about one of the lessons life has to offer uncertainty. I often hear,“ Nothing could have prepared us for this pandemic.” While it came as a surprise, some of us have had to deal with times of great uncertainty before.
This was the case for my family when my father began falling over. We would blame the ice. Then just the road.“ Who makes these things so high?” we wondered. Then, he slowed. He began to drag his feet.“ Well,” we said,“ he's getting older.”
When his speech became worse, it became harder to explain. When did he last see a doctor anyway? We searched the Internet as he worsened—because we felt real medical attention was not required.
    Uncertainty.
It' s uncomfortable. It makes your stomach tighten. If you don' t fight it, it will seep through (渗入)your body, lighting your brain up with anxiety. When a neurologist(神经病学家) explained the problem, it wasn' t what we wanted to hear. Instead, we opened a Pandora' s box of even more unknowns.
When we found out he had AIS (肌肉萎缩性侧面硬化病)the uncertainty became a burden. He was losing control of his muscles, his speech, ability to swallow—and we were paralyzed on how to prepare.
ALS is cruel. It traps you in your body. When the future looks so dark, you have to take comfort in the tiniest pleasures. I wish I’d done more. But I was new to uncertainty. I'd never experienced such a lack of control. I was focused on solving problem that couldn't be solved.
I worried about how my father would get worse. I read everything I could to try and help his situation, but there was nothing I could do. But my dad didn't live long enough for me to prepare for his condition to get worse. Life doesn't go according to plan and there is a difference between preparation and worry.
As we battle global uncertainty, it is teaching us the same lesson. A lesson about humility ( 谦 卑 ) . About the fact that you cannot save something you love alone. If COVID -19 is disturbing everyone, we should consider what we can learn. These lessons are hard, teaching us to hold on to what matters and how to let go.
    24. Why is the pandemic mentioned in the beginning ?
    A. To explain its impact on the author’s life.
    B. To lead up to the topic of uncertainty.
    C. To show how the author got used to it.
    D. To tell the lessons the author learned from it.
    25. How did the author feel after his / her father was diagnosed with ALS ?
    A. Anxious B. Peaceful C. Annoyed D. Optimistic
    26. What can we conclude about uncertainty from the article ?
    A. It makes people stronger. B. It leads to a lack of control.
    C. It brings family closer to each other. D. It can remove the darkness in life.
    27. What is the lesson mentioned in the last paragraph ?
    A. Be humble to the unknown. B. Prepare for uncertainty in advance.
    C. Express our love before it’s too late. D. Cherish what matters and learn to let go.
    C
Tiger Woods was only 19-year-olds when he made his first cut on the PGA Tour, but the newest wonderkid in golf has beaten that marker this week.
The Chinese-Tapei star Hsieh Cheng-wei was in the field for the Linkou International, and experienced a storming start on Thursday when he posted a three under par(标准杆) 69. His second round tailed off slightly as he finished with a 74, but at one under par, he remains in the tournament for the weekend.
Hsieh broke the record of Guan Tian-lang, who made the cut at the 2013 Masters when he was 14 years and 169 days. The legendary Tiger Woods - who reportedly shot a 48 over nine holes when he was only three-years-old, was 19 when he made his first professional cut at the 1995 Masters.
Cheng-wei isn’t old enough to have been able to drive home from the course after his rounds, and nor could he celebrate his new feat with an alcoholic drink. However, he wasn’t about to get carried away with his performance either.
“I didn’t putt(轻击球) well.” he told Markman from AsianTour.com. “It’s not that tough out there. I just didn’t play my best game. I got nervous towards the end because I wasn’t playing well. I didn’t have much expectation though. I just try to play my best.”
Despite his own critical assessment, golf fans reacted favourably when the official Asian Tour Twitter account praised the feat, writing: “Local amateur Hsieh Cheng-wei becomes the youngest male player (14 years and 33 days old) to make the halfway cut on one of the game’s major Tours,” alongside a clapping emoji.
The youngster will now hope to progress better than previous record holder Tian-lang, who is currently outside the top 1,900 players in the world. But his achievement on his home course will have undoubtedly made the golf work take note.
    28. Who made his first cut at the youngest age?
    A. Tiger Woods. B. Hsieh Cheng-wei. C. Guan Tian-lang. D. Markman.
    29. Which of the following can replace “get carried away with” in Paragraph 4?
    A. Be anxious about. B. Be tired of. C. Be annoyed about. D. Be excited about.
    30. What can we know from Cheng-wei’s words?
    A. He didn’t play the game with ease. B. He was nervous from the beginning.
    C. He was content with the process. D. He had no expectation for the game.
    31. What will Cheng-wei do next?
    A. Challenge Tian-lang to a game. B. Break the world record.
    C. Make greater achievements. D. Become the top 1900 player.
    D
Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called "intellectual debt ". We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we'll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.
In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly (and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.
It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you're likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you came to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.
We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.
    32. What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph?
    A. To present the research process of aspirin.
    B. To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.
    C. To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.
    D. To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.
    33. What does the underlined word "wary" probably mean in the second paragraph?
    A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Anxious. D. Watchful.
    34. How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly?
    A. By giving a definition. B. By making comparison.
    C. By doing an experiment. D. By telling a story.
    35. Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with?
    A. It's impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.
    B. It's wise not to rely on machine learning.
    C. It makes sense to prepare for danger in times of safety.
    D. It's OK as long as a system works well.

One day, Dad took Tim and Lily to the supermarket. “Now where has Tim gone?” asked Dad. Lily shrugged. Keeping track of Tim was not on her agenda today. She’d been trying to decide on the perfect gift for Dad’s upcoming birthday. This year, she was determined to prepare a present that couldn’t be bought at a store or ordered online.
“Daddy!” Tim appeared out of nowhere, disturbing Lily’s thoughts. He yelled, holding a cereal(麦片) box in the air, “Let’s get it! It’s nutritious and delicious! And it has a dragon inside!” Tim remembered Dad saying that when he was a kid, almost every box of cereal came with a toy. Ever since, Tim was certain that he, too, would find a toy in the next box.
When they got home, Dad and Lily began putting away the groceries. Tim couldn’t wait to take the box of cereal upstairs to his room. By the time they finished, Lily could hear Tim shouting. “No! No!” Tim’s voice kept getting louder and louder. Lily imagined each word as the sound of a hammer striking metal. Then she raced towards her brother’s room. The moment she stepped inside, she felt a crunch(嘎吱声)beneath her feet. It was obvious that Tim dumped all that cereal looking for a toy dragon. “They lied! No dragon. Just a picture on the box.” Tim sounded close to tears. Annoyed as Lily was, she said quietly, “Let’s see what the box says.” “I don’t know how to read.” her brother said in a low voice.
It reminded Lily that last school year, Tim’s teacher who sent home easy-to-read books and worksheets insisted that he was ready to learn to read and just needed some extra help, but Tim complained about books “for babies” and “boring” homework assignments. It was really a headache for Dad to teach Tim to read! At the thought of these, it seemed that Tim’s dragon issue had swept away her concern for a present for Dad.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Lily decided to cooperate with Tim, making up a dragon story and having Tim read for Dad.

    Paragraph 2:
After what seemed to be a century, Dad’s birthday finally came.

    A篇21. B 22.A 23. C
答案分析:根据题目“not sure of the spelling of a word”可追溯到文章中 Wildcard searches 这一段最后一句“Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word”,所以选择 B. Wildcard searches.
    22. A
答案分析:根据题目“the requirement of using the advanced search”可知答案应该在 How to use theadvanced search 根据“An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text whichis for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary.” A. Registering forthe dictionary.
    23. C
答案分析:根据文章中第一段“The quick search bar can be found on the OED homepage and at the top of every entry page…”,第二段“The question mark ? represents…”、“the asterisk * represents…”,第三段“who have logged in …”

B. Hsieh Cheng-wei.
D. Be excited about.
A. He didn’t play the game with ease.
    31. C 命题意图:考查推理判断 答案分析:根据最后一段“The youngster will now hope to progress better than previous record holder Tian-lang”, Hsieh Cheng-wei 接下来会更加努力地训练以取得更大的成就,所以选择 C. Make greater achievements.

Lily decided to cooperate with Tim, making up a dragon story and having Tim read for Dad. “What a good idea it is! Dad must be satisfied with such a special present!” Lily thought to herself, feeling a surge of excitement. She couldn’t wait to share it with Tim. Unexpectedly, he shook his head in disapproval. Aware that Tim was not confident with himself, Lily cast an encouraging look at him, saying, “I’ll help you, and I’m sure you’ll make it.” Tim nodded. In the following days, Lily taught him to read with great patience. Then, a new dragon story was born. Meanwhile, Tim also learned to read the story they made up.
After what seemed to be a century, Dad’s birthday finally came. They told Dad to sit in the middle of the couch. Lily stood in front of Dad while Tim stood behind her. “This is a present from both of us! A dragon story written by us!” Lily announced and she could feel Dad was in surprise. When it was Tim’s turn to read the story, he turned to the first page, reading slowly. Having finished, he caught sight of Dad wiping tears off his eyes. “This is the best birthday present I have ever received!” he said, holding both children in his arms. It was at that time that Tim seemed to have grown up.

M: Louise, I’d like to know where the coffee houses are?
W: Well, the place we are standing in is very near the coffee houses, just 200 meters down the second street. We are standing here at the south entrance of the second street. Left to us is a gas station. If you walk straightly along the second street and turn right, you will find a school after a 100 meters’ walk. And my ladies and gentlemen, pay attention! Right opposite the school is the famous shopping center of the capital. Anyway, the most important thing — our hotel! It’s at the end of the second street in the north, about 400 meters farther than the school.
M: Excuse me. I hear the central park is very famous. Is it far from the hotel?
W: If you go out of the hotel and turn right, after about a 200 meters’ walk, you will see the central park.

W: Joe, you look worried? Is everything OK?
M: Honestly? Not really. I just got my grade on my physics, and I failed it horribly.
W: I’m sorry to hear that. But don’t feel too bad. It was a pretty hard test, and there’s still half the term left. I’m sure you can turn things around.
M: Thanks. But I don’t know. All my classes are so hard this term. I just don’t have enough time to study for it. I had my chemistry mid-term exam the day before. And I had to write a ten-page paper for my literature class over the weekend. By the time I got finished with all of the other tests and projects, I couldn’t catch up on this class. I even thought about withdrawing from this class. But we’re pretty far into the term now. If I withdraw, it’ll show on my academic record.
W: Well, there’s a study group for this class. You know, we meet after each class for about an hour. And I’m sure Professor Smith would be happy to help you out during his office hours. If you really need to pass, I think that would be helpful.
    (Text 10)
W: Thanksgiving is one of America’s most popular holidays. It is a day for expressing thanks for all the good things in life. It is also a day for family reunions. On that day many people travel long distances to get together with their families.
But not everyone can spend Thanksgiving with his or her family. Today we’ll introduce a couple, Joan and Sandy Wilson, who could not afford to take time out to visit their parents, their uncles and aunts one year. They regretted not being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with all their family members. But soon they met other people who also were separated from their families. So the Wilsons began holding a yearly Thanksgiving dinner for what they called their “extended family”. This included people in their community.
The group has grown over the years. To accommodate all the guests, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson now have to add small tables to their large one in the big dining room. At first, many of their friends brought their babies and young children. Now some of the first guests are grandparents. They often bring their grandchildren.
Like many other Americans, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and their visitors enjoy a long day of cooking, eating and talking. The traditional meal usually includes a turkey. Other traditional Thanksgiving foods served with turkey are sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pies.
