Simone Biles was born in 1997. Soon, her parents found that she couldn't sit still. When she was 6 years old, her day-care group went on a field trip to a gym. Simone loved watching the gymnasts train and performances. She couldn't just watch them, though—she had to try their moves. She was so good that one of the coaches sent a letter home with her, inviting Simone to take gymnastics classes.

Simone is one of the greatest athletes in history. At age 16, she won two gold medals at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships(AGWC), including the all-around (the total score from competing in all events). Simone competed in her first Olympics in 2016. She was the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals in an Olympic Games. Bars and restaurants around the world are having to rethink the way they interact with customers during the pandemic(疫情). In the Italian city of Florence, some are looking to the past: using centuries-old wine windows to sell food and drinks.

Rising just above ground level, blink（眨眼）and you might miss these tiny openings, called “buchette del vino,” (literally “little wine holes") in Italian. The small windows were used to sell wine-to-go during the Renaissance period. It was a cheaper and more direct way to serve the people instead of heading to bars or wine shops. The tiny windows also allowed the wine merchants to avoid paying any taxes on the wine they were selling.

With the windows still existing and functioning around Florence, businesses that happen to have one are taking advantage of the ability to stay physically distant while still selling drinks or snacks.

Gelateria Vivoli is a famous ice cream shop and was one of the first businesses to use their buchette del vino. “ We chose to use our buchette during Covid-19 both as a protective measure and to bring a smile to passers-by,” said Giulia Vivoli, the owner of the shop. “We've had it open in the past, but to reuse it at this particular moment in time is especially appropriate.”

Naghy Kamal, owner of restaurant Osteria delle Brache, followed suit shortly after. “We have one of the oldest wine windows in Florence,” he said in a phone interview.“Reopening it at this difficult time has proved incredibly helpful and has really shown that some traditions never die,” he continued. “They offered convenient and direct exchanges between seller and client, which is exactly a suitable way to handle our purchases during Covid-19.”

Today, you can find around 180 buchette del vino around Florence. Even though customers are now allowed to come inside the buildings to pay, many still prefer to pay through the windows—making sure to continue to keep a safe distance.

There is no question that George Washington's achievements were enormous: the first president of the United States. But how much of what we know about him is fact? Did Washington as a boy really say “I can't tell a lie" after damaging his father's prized cherry tree with a hatchet（斧头）?

In a word, no. This is not to say that young Washington was a Pinocchio. It's just that there is no evidence that this event actually occurred. However, it's the story behind the story that is the story here. When Washington died in 1799, Americans were well aware of his public achievements but knew little about his personal life, and they were eager to fill that void. Mason Locke Weems, a book agent, saw that need and was ready to meet it as one of Washington’s first biographers（传记作者）. A moralist as well as an opportunist, Weems determined that he would show that Washington's “unequalled rise was due to his Great Virtues.”In the process, Weems described Washington as a role model for the newly established country.

Weems's The Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington was first published in 1800, but his cut-from-whole-cloth story about the cherry tree was not added until the book's fifth edition. Weems claimed that he had heard the story from an elderly friend of the Washington family, but there is no evidence to support his claim.

In 1836,William Holmes McGuffey rewrote the cherry tree story for children as The Little Boy and the Hatchet in his McGuffey Readers, a series of grammar school books. Throughout the 19th century and into the 20th, the story was retold in a variety of readers and textbooks. In the process, the cherry tree story would define Washington's character for generations of Americans, and, though its credibility would begin to be questioned, it had already taken on a truth of its own.
