    When I grow up
In kindergarten, my class was asked to draw pictures, showing what we wanted to be when we grew up.Our drawings were expected to display our dream occupations.I remember pictures of ballerinas dancing, firefighters putting out a blaze, and astronauts leaping across the moon.
My picture showed a figure with brown hair holding a box of orange juice beside a counter.Underneath was my handwriting: "When I grow up, I want to work at Market Basket because it
would be fun to swipe(刷)orange juice across the scanner. " Out of everything, my five﹣year﹣old self wished to work at the local grocery store.
When we are young, questions of what we want to be when we grow up are common.Yet we are not
expected to respond with an answer that is likely to come true. However, when we become teens, we are asked the very same questions twice as often. The difference is, now we are supposed to answer with confidence.
Teens are expected to know exactly what we want to be and how we will favor that goal. However,
not all of us can be so sure.Even though I am in high school, I cannot answer with supportive ideas. But I don't consider that a bad thing. How am I supposed to know what I will want to spend my time doing at age 40?
When I think about the future,I definitely don't see myself working at Market Basket, but in reality,
if that was what would make me happy, I would do it. So, the next time someone asks me what I want to be when I grow up, I will simply say "happy".
Happiness is a destination for everyone. We may want to walk different paths in life, but we all want
to be happy wherever we end up. Choose your path, but don't worry too much about choosing wisely. Make a mistake or two and try new things. But always remember, if you're not happy, you're not at the end of your journey yet.
    24. What did the author want to be when he was in kindergarten?_______

B.kindergartners have limited imagination of their dream occupations
C.teenagers are supposed to be clear about what they want to be
D.teenagers stick to the path they chose when they were young
    26. The author would probably agree that _______.
A.the principle of growth lies in human choice B.happiness is the meaning of existence
C.it is never too late to correct mistakes D.your future depends on your dreams
    27. What does the passage mainly talk about? ___
A.Different stages of life. B.Career guidance.
C.The real goal of life. D.Career paths.

Walk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it steamy, warm, damp and thick.
But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to solve global warming.Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year:equal to the total amount of CO2 given off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to the future climate change? If it gets drier, will it survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.
Unfortunately, collecting information is incredibly difficult. To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen(花粉)kept in lake mud.Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediment(沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provides enough information to prove how the Amazon forest reacts to climate change.
28.How do scientists study the past climate change? __
A.By predicting the climate change in the future.
B.By drilling down deep into land sediment.
C.By taking samples from rivers in the Amazon.
D.By analyzing fossilized pollen in lake mud.
    29. What is needed for drilling down into lake sediment? ______
A.The latest helicopter. B.The special equipment.
C.The light machinery. D.The narrow path.
    30. What is the purpose of writing the passage? _______
    A.To attract more people's attention to CO2.
B.To call on people to protect rainforests.
C.To inform people of how scientists work on rainforests.
D.To warn people to stay away from the danger of rainforests.
    31. The best title for the text may be _______.
A.Mystery of the Rainforest B.Climates of the Amazon
C.The History of the Rainforest D.Changes of the Rainforest
    D
The Mystery of Why Sunflowers Turn to Follow the Sun—Solved
Scientists have answered a burning question central to sunflowers:Why do young flowers always face the sun over the course of a day?
And also: Once sunflowers become full﹣grown, why do they stop tracking the sun and only face east?
In a newly﹣published article, researchers claim that a young plant's sun﹣tracking (also called heliotropism)can be explained by circadian rhythms—the behavioural changes tied to an internal clock that humans also have, which generally follows a 24﹣hour cycle.
"Growth rates on the east side were high during the day and very low at night, whereas growth rates on the west side were low during the day and higher at night, " the journal article says.
The researchers tied plants up so they couldn't move or turned them away from the sun—and they found those flowers eventually had "fewer organic materials and less leaf area" than flowers that could
    move with the sun.
Full﹣grown sunflowers respond differently to the sun.According to the article, "As overall growth slows down, the circadian clock ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to light early in the morning than in the afternoon or evening, so it gradually stops moving westward during the day."
The researchers compared full﹣grown flowers facing east with those they turned to face west, and found that east﹣facing flowers attracted five times as many helpful pollinators. That's because the east﹣facing flowers heat up faster and bees like warm flowers.
"Just like people, plants depend on the daily rhythms of day and night to function," Anne Sylvester, director of the National Science Foundation's Plant Genome(基因组). Research Programme said in a press release. "Sunflowers, like solar panels, follow the sun from east to west. These researchers explore information in the sunflower genome to understand how and why sunflowers track the sun."
UC Berkeley professor and co﹣author of the study, Benjamin Blackman, believes that the connection between circadian rhythms and growth could be applicable to other researches. "The more general point, that one of the circadian clock's adaptive functions is to regulate the timing and strength of growth responses to environmental signals,is one that I think will apply to a broad range of qualities and species." he said.
32.What did the researchers discover when they tied the sunflowers up?________
A.They still tracked and faced towards the sun.
B.They grew faster during the daytime than they did at night.
C.Their growth rates were lower than those of flowers facing the sun.
D.The growth rates on the west side were higher than those on the east.
    33. Why do sunflowers move westward less when they are fully﹣grown?_______
A.Because they will not be affected by light anymore.
B.Because they would stop growing up if they faced west.
C.Because they are not active at all during afternoons or evenings.
D.Because they are more sensitive to light in the early morning from the east.
    34. What may the underlined word "pollinators" (Para.7)refer to?_______
    A.Bees. B.Plants. C.Energy. D.Researchers.
    35. What is the possible direction of future study, according to Benjamin Blackman? _______
A.Exploring information in the sunflower genome.
B.Comparing human's circadian rhythms with sunflowers'.
C.Comparing full﹣grown flowers facing east with those facing west.
D.Exploring how circadian rhythms affect the growth of other species.6;用户:颐中外国语;邮箱:yzwgy999@xyh.com;学号:41619301

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “ 36 ” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner?
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37 Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. 38 If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40 Over time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.
    A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
    B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
    C. You'll work harder if you train with someone else.
    D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?
    E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice?
    F. Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.
    G. Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn’t play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around.’’ His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle.” His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn’t show much interest.” Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

cnn。com/travel/article/china﹣beautiful﹣places/index。
When I grow up,I want to work at Market Basket because it would be fun to swipe orange juice across the scanner.
However, when we become teens,we are asked the very same questions twice as often. The difference is,now we are supposed to answer with confidence.
Happiness is a destination for everyone. We may want to walk different paths in life, but we all want to be happy wherever we end up.
To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen kept in lake mud.
Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediment(沉淀物),which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery.
C.To inform people of how scientists work on rainforests.(告诉人们科学家是如何研究雨林的。)
31.A. But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now,no one has reached a satisfying answer.(但是如果你在大约15000年前的最后一个冰河时期去过那里,情况会一样吗?30多年来,科学家们一直在争论雨林对冰河时期寒冷干燥的气候会有什么样的反应,但到目前为止,还没有人得出令人满意的答案。) 故选A。
The researchers tied plants up so they couldn't move or turned them away from the sun—and they found those flowers eventually had "fewer organic materials and less leaf area" than flowers that could move with the sun.(研究人员将植物绑起来,这样它们就不能移动或远离太阳﹣﹣﹣他们发现这些花最终比可以随着太阳移动的花"有机物质更少,叶面积更小"。)
As overall growth slows down, the circadian clock ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to light early in the morning than in the afternoon or evening,so it gradually stops moving westward during the day(随着整体生长速度减慢,昼夜节律钟确保植物在清晨对光的反应比下午或晚上更强烈,因此它在白天逐渐停止向西移动。)
That's because the east﹣facing flowers heat up faster and bees like warm flowers.(那是因为朝东的花升温更快,蜜蜂喜欢温暖的花。)
The more general point, that one of the circadian clock's adaptive functions is to regulate the timing and strength of growth responses to environmental signals,is one that I think will apply to a broad range of qualities and species," he said.(更一般的一点是,昼夜节律钟的适应性功能之一是调节生长对环境信号反应的时间和强度,我认为这将适用于广泛的质量和物种,"他说。)

    Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
There is comprehensive evidence that we humans are not taking good care of the ocean, posing a lot of problems, such as plastic pollution, oil leak, rising sea levels as well as extreme weathers. As a consequence, great importance should be attached to protect our ocean.
Admittedly, intense attention should be paid and tireless efforts be made by people all over the world. Initially, governments need to consider making policies and taking proper measures to to conserve our ocean. In addition, what is of utmost importance is that we individuals should raise our awareness of environmental protection, reducing our carbon footprint and living a green lifestyle.
Hopefully, with our joint efforts, we are bound to build an environmentally-friendly planet shared by all human being.

    Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
June 8th was officially named by the UN in 2009 as World Ocean Day. It’s a day to stress the importance of the ocean and remind people to protect it.
It’s generally acknowledged that the ocean plays an important role in many aspects. First of all, with rich biological resources, the ocean provides samples for biological science research in terms of the diversity of global biological resources. In addition, the abundant food resources and energy make it possible for living things to survive better. Equally importantly, the abundant water resources bear the operation of the global water circulation system, which can affect or even determine the global climate change. So many benefits does ocean bring to human beings that great importance can’t be attached enough to protect it.
Of course, it’s everybody’s duty to shoulder this responsibility. For one thing, it’s a good idea to widely study knowledge concerning the ocean and think of effective approaches to protect it. For another, let’s stop our bad behaviors which may indirectly pollute the ocean. Small things can make a big difference. I believe, with our joint efforts, a truly beautiful ocean will always surround us.

    Our Oceans, Our Responsibility
Nowadays, it is quite common that oceans are being badly polluted. To have a better life on the earth, we human beings should well protect our oceans for the following reasons.
What comes first is that oceans are where life started and contain abundant species, which means a lot to biodiversity on the earth. Besides, it’s oceans that offer us various resources, such as food, energy and so on, ensuring sustainable development of human beings. What’s more, oceans have a great impact on world climate because they can take in heat from the sun.
From what’s mentioned above, protecting oceans becomes urgent. So let’s take action immediately and protect oceans for the sake of us!

    Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Thompson, her voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents. And then she showed how she liked Teddy’s presents, putting the bracelet on, and using some of the perfume on her wrist. From then on, Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the excellent children in the class.
    Paragraph 2:
Ten years later, Teddy invited Mrs. Thompson to attend his wedding as groom’s mother. She used the bracelet and the perfume which were the present of that year. At the wedding ceremony, she met the man with good manners. He said to her, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson. Today you smelled just like my mom used to.” Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, “Teddy, you were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I'm so proud that today I can be your mother!”
