Funny Family Movies You and Your Kids Will Love
    ◆Yes Day
What if you said “yes” to everything your kids asked for, for one day only? Jennifer Garner and Édgar Ramírez star in this 2021 Netflix family comedy as parents who decide to do just that – and find it’s freeing for them as it is for their kids. Maybe you’ll make Yes Day an annual tradition in your own family after watching this!
Best for: Ages 8 and up
    ◆Soul
Mixing jazz music with a heartwarming tale about life and death, soul also adds humour when the soul of a would-be jazz musician Joe gets trapped in the body of a cat. As he struggles to get his body back and pursue his musical dreams, your family will laugh (and cry) along with the film’s mix of humour and insights on the human condition.
Best for: Ages 10 and up
    ◆Toy Story 3
The first two films in the Toy Story series are great, as is the recent Toy Story 4. But a slightly different story – with a surprisingly dramatic climax (高潮)– makes the Toy story 3 a fun adventure movie and an ideal choice for the whole family.
Best for: Ages 6 and up
    ◆Raya and the Last Dragon
Grown-ups and kids alike were eagerly waiting for the first Southeast Asian, Disney princess, Raya. Raya’s only hope to save the fictional land of Kumandra is to find the last dragon, which is thought to have disappeared. But she really exists – in the form of a silly purple creature. Beautiful Disney cartoon helps bring this fun film to life.

Evie Toombes, 20, born with spina bifida (脊柱裂), has won her case against a doctor who advised her mum she would not need to take a supplement (补充剂) that could have prevented the condition. Doctors routinely advise mums-to-be on the benefits of taking folic acid (叶酸) before pregnancy and up until the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Susan Rodway, Evie’s lawyer, told the court that if Evie’s mother had been advised by her doctor, she would not have proceeded with her pregnancy as hurriedly as she did. If she had been put off getting pregnant, she would have had a “normal, healthy” baby.
Despite discussing folic acid during the consultation, Mrs Toombes insisted she was not told by Dr. Mitchell of its significance in spina bifida prevention. “He told me it was not necessary,” she told the judge. “I was advised that if I had a good diet previously, I would not have to take folic acid.”
On the other hand, Dr. Mitchell denied the claims, stating he provided Mrs Toombes with “reasonable advice”. He claimed he surely advised the mother to have a good diet and good folic acid levels and denied saying supplements were not necessary.
At last, Judge Coe today ruled against the doctor. The court’s decision could pave the way for Evie to now claim damages related to her disability which will ensure she is supported properly for the rest of her life.
The ruling could open the doors for other healthcare professionals to be found responsible for inattentive forecast advice which results in the birth of a child with a serious health condition.

    24. What does the underlined word “condition” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. The case. B. Spina bifida. C. The supplement. D.Pregnancy.
    25. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Folic acid can be taken only after pregnancy.
    B. The judge supported Dr. Mitchell’s statement.
    C. Evie was diagnosed with spina bifida when she grew up.
    D. The mothers had better take folic acid before pregnancy.
    26. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The decision of the judge.
    B. The advice of Miss Toombes.
    C. The argument of Dr. Mitchell.
    D. The importance of the supplement.
    27. What’s the advice to the healthcare professionals according to the text?
    A. They should give advice carefully.
    B. They are to blame for abnormal babies.
    C. They should take some measures to protect themselves.
    D. They are supposed to improve their professional skills.

    C
In mammals, loud calls usually serve as alarm signals that warn fellow species of an enemy or other danger. On the other hand, screams from humans can have very different meanings, as Swiss researchers now report in the journal “PLoS Biology”. Human’s screams are not always only associated with negative emotions such as fear, pain, anger and grief, but also positive emotions such as joy and pleasure.
Sascha Frühholz and his colleagues from the University of Zurich studied how many types of human screams there are, how accurately test subjects can distinguish them, and which brain regions are involved in processing such sound signals. To do this, they first made sound recordings of different screams. Twelve men and women were to put themselves in situations where they reacted with a brief scream. The predetermined situations included, for example: an attack by an armed stranger, celebration about a sporting victory of their favorite team, the threat of an opponent.
From the recordings, the researchers finally selected 420 screams. From this, they identified six distinct categories of screams, including three of alarming characters (cries of pain, anger, and fear) and three non-alarming screams (as expressions of great pleasure, extreme joy, and desperate sadness). Contrary to all expectations, the subjects reacted to non-alarming screams more quickly and recognized the emotion expressed with it more reliably than with alarming screams. This was also confirmed by images of the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI).
Until now, researchers assumed that humans also detect and process perceived alarm signals particularly quickly in the form of screams, as this is an important survival mechanism, says Frühholz. But unlike monkeys and other mammals, non-alarming screams would have become more important for communication. “This changed priority is probably due to needs that have evolved in the evolution of complex human social relationships.”

    28. What does the text mainly talk about?
    A. Human’s screams expressions.
    B. An experiment launched in screams.
    C. Loud calls as a survival mechanism.
    D. Mammals’ loud calls served as alarm signals.
    29. Which expression can be reacted to more quickly?
    A. Cries of pain. B. Anger.
    C. Fear. D. Desperate sadness.
    30. What does the last paragraph convey?
    A. Monkeys are not sensitive to non-alarming screams.
    B. Humans survive because of quick reaction to screams.
    C. Non-alarming screams gain priority because of human’s revolution.
    D. Non-alarming screams make human social relationships more complex.
    31. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To spread and advocate. B. To argue and discuss.
    C. To compare and inform. D. To recommend and introduce.

    D
In Iceland, a newly-opened plant – Orca is pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere and turning it to rock, locking away the main criminal behind global warming. It is the world’s largest plant using the direct air capture (捕获) technology (DAC), which is the least developed of the carbon removal technologies.
Unlike the traditional CCS (carbon capture and storage) methods which capture CO2 immediately from highly-concentrated industrial pollution zones before it enters the atmosphere, the plant pulls CO2 from the surrounding air.
Fans in front of the collector draw in the surrounding air, take CO2 out of it and then release it through ventilators (排气扇) at the back. Project manager Lukas Kaufmann said “very selective filter (过滤) materials inside our collector containers catch carbon dioxide.” “As soon as the filter is full, we close it off, and then we heat it up to around 100 degrees Celsius to separate the pure gas,” Kaufmann added. Mixed with fresh water, the gas is then injected under high pressure into the basalt rock between 800 and 2,000 metres underground. The solution fills the rock’s caves, where over time it turns into dark-gray stones.
The carbon dioxide would only be re-released into the air if the rock were to heat up to very high temperatures, as in a volcanic eruption, Didier Dalmaz zone, head of the chemistry laboratory at French engineering school said.
The Orca plant, which cost $10-15 million to build, can absorb around 4,000 tons of CO2 annually – just a small amount of what will be necessary but Climeworks, the company that has just built the plant, says it can grow rapidly as efficiency improves and costs decrease.

    32. What do we know about the Orca plant?
    A. The capture technology it uses is well developed.
    B. It did not cost much money to build the plant.
    C. The plant captures CO2 after it enters the atmosphere.
    D. The CO2 dealt with by the plant will never be re-released.
    33. What does the underlined word “solution” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Fresh water. B. CO2.
    C. The way to deal with CO2. D. The Liquid containing the gas.
    34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The methods of capturing CO2. B. The workings of the Orca plant.
    C. The process of building the Orca plant. D. The approaches to breaking down CO2.
    35. What’s Climeworks’ attitude towards the future of the Orca plant?
    A. Uncertain B. Doubtful C. Optimistic D. Negative

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The world that we live in is beautiful because it’s made up of people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. What could possibly be a better way to celebrate that diversity than to acknowledge Global Diversity Awareness Month every October? 36
Could you imagine a world where everyone looked the same or had the exact same hobbies and interests? “ 37 Our diversity is our strength,” US actress Angelina Jolie said in an interview in 2017. “What a dull and pointless life it would be if everyone was the same.”
38 Everyone has their own way of viewing things, which is shaped by their individual experiences and worldviews they carry with them. When dealing with an issue, different interpretations and approaches can generate creativity and innovation, instead of everyone contributing the same thoughts and conclusions. To put it simply, our diversity and inclusion are our biggest strengths.
As such, Global Diversity Awareness Month is a great way for us to celebrate diversity. We can learn more about other cultures by learning about their beliefs, values and customs. We can do this by watching foreign films, listening to music from other countries, or even going to local cultural art exhibits (展览). 39 Everyone can bring traditional dishes from their countries and hometowns. In this way, we can open our mind to new ideas and customs and delicious food! Learning about other cultures will help us better ourselves and society as a whole.
As Indian social activist Mahatma Gandhi once put it, “Our aim to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” 40

    A. The world would be boring without our differences.
    B. Diversity and inclusion make our world a better place.
    C. Diversity refers to the characteristics that make people unique.
    D. Then, we should make an effort to appreciate those differences.
    E. Hopefully, with each passing day, we get closer and closer to that goal.
    F. Another way we can celebrate diversity is by inviting our friends and family to dinner.
    G. During this time, people from all over the world celebrate what makes us different and unique.

    注意:
Many years ago, when I was a young man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a St. Louis piano company. We sold our pianos all over the state by advertising in small town newspapers. The piano would be delivered after receiving sufficient replies.
Every time we advertised in the country of Southeast Missouri, we would receive a reply on a postcard, saying “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany (红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money, totally 52 payments.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of cotton field, with a dirt floor and some chickens in the house. There was nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through it in several places. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a shabby dress.
I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement. Then I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect. She still sent us the same post card every six weeks.
    注意:

    Version 1:
A couple of years later, I owned my own piano company. When I advertised in that area, the post cards started coming to me, including the old lady's. In spite of knowing that I was about to make a terrible business decision, I delivered a red mahogany piano to her, telling her I would carry the contract myself at $10 a month with no interest, which would mean 52 payments. The old lady and her granddaughter were too excited and moved to say anything. Much to my surprise, the payments came in, all 52 of them as agreed. The incident was so incredible that it was rooted in my mind for 20 years.
One day after 20 years, as I was sitting at a bar, I saw a lovely young woman playing very beautiful music on a red mahogany piano. I picked up my drink and moved to a table beside her where I could listen carefully. However, she recognized that I was the man who sold her grandma a piano. I was astonished at her superb technique. It turned out she managed to learn to play in school through intense effort, eventually winning many awards and a music scholarship. She expressed her deep gratitude to me. I felt proud of her and also realized that it was her grandma’s persistence and love that made her achieve her dream.

W: OK, don’t forget to wear your helmet! (2)
    Text 3
M: I can’t find my blue shirt. It isn’t in its usual place — the cupboard. (3) I’ve looked all the drawers and shelves as well. Have you seen it?
W: It’s in the washing machine. Wear one of your white ones today.
    Text 4 (总结题)
W: Dad, look what we’ve made with snow. We used stones for his eyes and a stick for his mouth. Now we need something for his nose.
M: Use a carrot. That will be the best thing for a nose.
    Text 5
M: Do you think I should take a gift to my teacher? Flowers maybe? She has been so kind to me this term.
W: I thought you would get her a box of chocolates or some perfume, but probably your idea is better. (5)
    Text 6
W: I want to try this new weight-loss drug. (6) It can help me lose weight.
M: Does it really work? Where did you hear about it?
W: It was one of those advertisements on Facebook. (6)
M: I don’t believe it! If you want to lose weight, you’d better exercise more. How often do you exercise?
W: About two hours per week.
M: You’re supposed to be exercising at least 40 minutes per day. (7) Here, take this brochure. It’s the gym where I work out. If you sign up, you can get a free 30-minute training course.
    Text 7 (第8题为推断题)
M: I need some new clothes for the new school year. Can you help me?
W: Of course. What do you like to wear?
M: Well, I attend college in California, and it’s always warm there. So I need a lot of shorts and T-shirts. I also like to go to the beach when I’m not in class, so I need bathing suits and beach shoes.
W: Okay. Follow me over here. We have some new summer clothes. Do you like bright colors? Here are some nice blue, green, and yellow T-shirts.
M: Those are too bright for me. I like those white and grey ones. (9)
W: Okay. I’ll grab some different sizes, and you can try them all on!
    Text 8
W: Why is there no sign? Do we go straight ahead, turn left or turn right?
M: Drive straight ahead, (10) because I can see the village in that direction.
W: Bus and train travelers don’t have problems like this. (10) Oh look, the map says right.
M: So we should reach the village in good time. I hope our hotel is nice.
W: The double rooms and houses were full, but the apartment I booked looks great. (11) It has fantastic views.
M: I’m looking forward to seeing the ancient buildings. Staying in a historic village will make a pleasant change from our usual beach holiday. (12)
W: Yes, (12) and we can drive around and explore the surrounding areas by the way. It sounds like the village can get crowded sometimes in the holiday season.
M: We can share the driving if you like. Then you can get a better look at the beautiful mountains on both sides.
    Text 9 (第13题为推断题)
W: I received your school report this morning and it’s very interesting.
M: Really? I hope there isn’t any bad news in there.
W: No — just the opposite. You did well in every subject. You were excellent in two of them.
    M: I know — art and chemistry.
W: No. You did OK in chemistry, (14) but in art and biology you were amazing. The teacher said you should think of studying medicine.
M: I really don’t want to be a doctor. I want to be an artist. (15)
W: But that is a poorly-paid job. You could earn a high salary and have a lot of respect as a doctor. Most importantly, you could save lives.
M: I don’t care about money and status. I want to be creative. (15)
W: Consider it carefully. Young people often think like this. It is sad that we have to make big decisions in our teens and twenties. It is a pity we can’t leave the big decisions until our thirties when we are old enough. (16)
M: I will think twice about it. But I want to do a job I love.
    Text 10
Well, I’d love to share with you some experiences about my latest interview. I remember my stomach was turning and my hands were shaking while I was waiting. It wasn’t that I was ill or cold. It was a job I really wanted to get. (17) I left university with a degree in art. I was told I had a great talent but that hadn’t made finding work easy. My previous interviews didn’t go well. At the first interview, (18) my mind just went blank and I couldn’t answer the questions. The bus broke down on the way to my second interview, (18) and the interviewers weren’t impressed when I arrived late. So, this time I was determined to get it right. (18) I really didn’t want to end up with an ordinary office or a factory job. This interview was for a job doing cartoons in an art studio for advertising campaigns. (19) It was perfect for me. So how did I calm myself down? (20) Someone suggested listening to quiet music or having a good rest, but I couldn’t see that working. Instead, I went for a run to steady my nerves before my big chance. (20) It worked. Then I got the job.
