Some years ago I was offered a writing task that would require three months of travel through Europe. I had been abroad a couple of times, but I could hardly claim to know my way around the continent (大陆). Moreover, my knowledge of foreign languages was limited to a little college French.
I hesitated. How would I, unable to speak the language, totally unfamiliar with local geography or transportation systems, set up interviews and do research? It seemed impossible, and with much regret I sat down to write a letter begging off. Halfway through, a thought ran through my mind: you can’t learn if you don’t try. So I accepted it.
There were some bad moments. But by the time I had finished the trip I was an experienced traveler. And ever since, I have never hesitated to head for even the most remote of places, without guides or even advanced bookings, confident that somehow I will manage.
The point is that the new, the different, is almost by definition (意味着) scary. But each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning gathers, the world opens to you.
I’ve learned to ski at 40, and flown up the Rhine River in a balloon. And I know I’ll go on doing such things. It’s not because I’m braver or more daring than others. I’m not. But I’ll accept anxiety as another name for challenge and I believe I can achieve wonders.
    24. Why did the author accept the writing task?
    A. He had never travelled abroad before. B. He hardly knew any foreign languages.
    C. He was familiar with any other country in Europe. D. He would learn something new and different by trying.
    25. What can we learn about the author from the text?
    A. He used to be a wonder. B. He thought little of travelling.
    C. He’s ready to face any challenge. D. He’s easy to be defeated.
    26. Which of the following best describes the author’s experience?
    A. Every garden has its weeds. B. Life is about learning to dance in the rain.
    C. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. D. All that glitters is not gold.
    27. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Ready to Try and Challenge. B. An Interesting Trip Abroad.
    C. My First Writing Assignment. D. How to be Daring and Brave.
    C
During the pandemic, millions of people replaced their large open-plan offices with their living rooms. Now, some companies say their employees need never come back in.
Brynn Harrington, Vice President of Facebook, said, “Facebook believes that remote work is the future. We want to be able to give our employees choice to live and build lives in places that they love, and we want to increase our ability to hire from places around the world, not just places where we currently have offices.”
Not everyone approves of working from home. Some people are eager to get back into the office. Facebook estimates that more than half of its staff could work remotely in the coming years, but it insists the move is not about saving costs. And it says it’s committed to keeping its offices open.
Other tech giants such as Microsoft and Twitter have also indicated staff could stay remote — even after lockdowns ease. On Wall Street, they seem less enthusiastic about the idea. The boss of Goldman Sachs rejected working from home as a new normal — labelling it an “aberration” instead. There are also fears that it could create more inequality.
For many companies, the answer probably lies somewhere in the middle — with workers dividing their time between office and home.
Tushar Agarwal from Hubble said, “The office does have a future. We believe the future is hybrid (混合). We believe the future is flexible. The demand for flexible workspace has just gone through the roof. Just in the month of March, we’re back to about sixty to seventy percent of pre-Covid levels, and actually huge amounts of companies that are demanding flexible space used to be in traditional rent space, so now people want more and more flexibility than ever before.”
One thing’s clear — the world of work will look very different to how it did before this crisis.
    28. Why do some companies prefer home-working?
    A. It can save cost. B. It creates more equality.
    C. It decreases interpersonal conflicts. D. It offers more possibilities for companies.
    29. What is the author’s attitude to the change of working place?
    A. Objective. B. Varied. C. Intolerant. D. Favorable.
    30. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. A normal thing. B. A flexible thing. C. An interesting thing. D. An untypical thing.
    31. Which can present Tushar Agarwal’s view of the future office?
    A. It will remain unchanged. B. It will mainly be remote work.
    C. It will mix different types of working places. D. It will have an open space in a large building.
    D
Bird-watching, the observation of live birds in their natural habitat, a popular pastime and scientific sport that developed almost entirely in the 20th century. In the 19th century almost all students of birds used guns and could identify an unfamiliar species only when its dead body was in their hands. Modern bird-watching was made possible largely by the development of equipment like binoculars (双筒望远镜), which enabled people to see and study wild birds, without harming them, better than ever before.
A great increase of interest in wild birds occurred from about the 1880s onward. Bird-watching first became popular in Great Britain, with the United States not far behind. Eventually, it became almost equally popular in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and the older countries of the British Commonwealth.
Journals and magazines, such as the Audubon Magazine (United States), British Birds (England), and La Terre et la vie (France), have also contributed to the growth of interest, as have the broadcasting media.
One of the great appeals of bird-watching is that it is an inexpensive activity. Basic equipment includes binoculars, a field book to aid identification, and a notebook for recording time and place of sightings; it is not necessary to travel. Many bird-watchers set up feeding stations to attract birds. The lists of bird observations collected by members of local bird-watching societies are very useful to scientists in determining dispersal (分布), habitat, and migration patterns of the various species.
From about 1930 there was a great increase in fieldwork, including photography, by amateur (业余的) bird-watchers. The wildfowl (野禽) counts of the International Wildfowl Research Bureau are run by a cooperative international effort throughout western Europe.
    32. When did bird-watching become a popular pastime and scientific sport?
    A. In the 18th century. B. In the 19th century. C. In the 20th century. D. In the 21th century.
    33. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
    A. Students of birds preferred eating dead birds.
    B. People used to kill birds on purpose for studying.
    C. People used to study birds only when they were dead.
    D. Students of birds would free the birds after studying them.
    34. What have not contributed to the growth of interest in bird-watching?
    A. Journals and magazines. B. The broadcasting media. C. Inexpensive equipment. D. Necessary travel.
    35. What does the passage mainly focus on?
    A. How to protect wild birds. B. Bird-watching, a popular sport.
    C. The history of the observation of wild birds. D. How to watch birds without harming them.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
According to some researchers at the Harvard business school, body language should be read through a scientific and unemotional eye. Whether in business or romance, some people use body language to convey (传达) false message and to take in others. 36 It can be very useful to learn a few tips about how to read body language lies.
Keep a close watch on the eyes. 37 At the same time, pathological (不理智的) liars and those practiced in the art of lying may hold your eyes for longer than a few seconds to make you feel uncomfortable and unable to rely on your instincts (本能).
Watch the hands of the person who speaks. While keeping the hands held behind the back may be thought of as a power pose, it is more likely to mean the person is hiding something. 38 By contrast, liars usually will keep their palms hidden in the pockets or turned over.
Consider how the person touches his face. Taekwando instructors at TKD tutor report that people will often cover their mouths in an effort to“cover up” their lies. 39
Be on guard around people who touch their faces in any form. Rubbing the nose often indicates the person is a skilled liar and is merely moving his hand from his mouth on purpose. A person who rubs his eyes often is trying to avoid eye contact while lying.
40 Standing absently, shrugging (耸肩) and other gestures that are abnormal for the person can also be signs of a liar.
    A. Truthful people use open palms.
    B. Don’t interrupt them when they are speaking.
    C. They may start a fake cough to cover the signal.
    D. Pay attention to nervous gestures that could give away a liar.
    E. It is very difficult for a liar to look at you straight in the eye.
    F. A person’s body language will very often suggest that a person is lying.
    G. They may feel uncomfortable with their clothing by straightening their pants’ leg.

    An Honest Mistake
Mary double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool things.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
After a break, Ms. Green announced the result, “Congratulations, Mary! You did it!” The whole class erupted! Ms. Green presented Mary with her prize. Mary smiled as she read the label on the box: To Mary Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Mom, everything’s PERFECT!” Mary shouted, showing her spelling test and prize when she got home.
Mom hugged her. “Put the test on the fridge so Dad and Kevin can see it when they get home.”
“And our cat, Kitty, too. Can you spell nicely, Kitty? And quickly and honesly, and...” Mary’s stomach tumbled (暴跌) to the floor. Honesly? H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
“Mary, what’s the matter?” said Mom.
“I don’t feel so good,” Mary said, putting Kitty down and putting the test paper into her backpack quickly.
Mom prepared some tea for Mary. After drinking a few sips, Mary walked slowly to her room and fell onto her bed. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all?
Soon Mary heard her dad and Kevin come in. The smell of pizza floated in the air.
Mary thought back to the last time they’d picked up pizza, after Kevin’s school play. They had almost reached home when Mom realized the shop owner had given them too much change. On finding this, Mom turned back without hesitation.
The whole time they were driving back to the pizzeria, Kevin kept saying, “It’s not our fault. The shop owner should have been more careful.”
    Had Kevin been right?
Mary went into the kitchen. Dad laughed and asked her where she had put the test. After all, there need some proof if they were having the pizza to celebrate.

    (One possible version)
Mary went to her room and pulled out the test paper. If Kevin had been right about the shop owner, then it wasn’t Mary’s fault to win the prize. Shouldn’t Ms. Green have been more careful? If she put the missing t back in, no one would ever know. Mary picked up her pencil and was about to write it down, when her door was knocked. It was her parents. They noticed her abnormal reaction and decided to have a heart-to-heart talk with her.
Ms. Green was unlocking the classroom door when Mary got to school the next morning. Mary gave her teacher the dictionary and pointed out the misspelled word. “I see.” Ms. Green pushed open the door. “Come in and sit down, Mary.” For a moment, Ms. Green stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then she picked up her pen. She crossed out the word perfect and wrote honest before handing the dictionary back. Mary got to keep this, for honesty.

W: Oh yes. That’s just it. I wish I had studied harder, so I could find a good job like yours.
M: It’s not too late. You can still do something more with your life. (11)
W: But I can’t go back to college at my age. (11)
M: Of course you can. Why not? Lots of people go back to school and go on to do great things. (11)
W: But I don’t remember anything from college now.
M: That’s why you go back. You can learn everything over again.
W: Do you think I would be capable of learning?
M: Of course. You are a very smart person and can do things well if you’re devoted to it. I trust your ability.
    Text 9
W: My goodness, this is beautiful.
M: Wonderful, isn’t it? Most people don’t like it when it rains like this, (13) but I do because you get natural beauty like that.
W: I don’t mind a bit of rain, and it’s even better with the sun shining like this. (13)
M: Yeah, sun and rain aren’t often out together, but when they are, it’s great. (13)
Having no wind is a bonus as well. Windy days are just no fun at all. It ruins everything, and it makes cycling almost impossible.
W: Unless the wind is behind you.
M: Yes, that’s very true! Good point. Shall we walk over there?
W: No. I’m enjoying sitting here with my best friend in the world! (14) (15) Sometimes life is better when you just sit back, relax and do nothing. (15)
M: I couldn’t agree more. (15) Just think, this seat is the same one we sat in all those years ago. We watched the sleepy sun go down then as well. How long ago was that?
W: We were married 21 years ago. (16)
M: Really? Wow! How time flies!
    Text 10
Good morning class, today we’ll compare two countries with very different cultures — the US and the UK. (17) Now, you’re probably thinking that those countries are almost the same. After all, they use the same language. But there are a lot of differences between the cultures of the two countries. American and British accents are very different, as well as some of the words and meanings. For example, a “parking lot” in the US is a “car park” in Britain. (18) Probably the best-known is the difference between soccer and football. Britain, and pretty much everywhere else in the world, refers to soccer as football. Another large difference between American and British culture is humor. American humor is obvious, while British humor, as far as I am concerned, tends to be dry. (19) Being an older country, the UK has many more well-known writers and artists. It also has many more historic buildings. The US, on average, has higher salaries, longer working hours, and bigger homes. Britain has fewer hours, a lower cost of living and free health care. (20)
